September 2009
Greetings
Dear eGoddess community,
Last night as I was dancing at the House of Blues, a gorgeous woman with a stunning hipscarf told me that it was a dream of hers to come on my annual bellydancing Hawaiian retreat. As I shimmied through the night, I wondered just what does it take to make dreams manifest into reality? I contemplated previous desires and began to break down the steps (click here to read blog) of what made these wishes transform from floating stardust to becoming reality.
I want to see all your dreams come true. I would like you to have the career of your dreams. I want you to feel fulfilled in your life’s goals. I yearn for you all to come to Greece and Hawaii with me! (And I am offering a special September discount and payment plan to help you to achieve this goal… see below). So I am dedicating this newsletter to your desires, wants, dreams and helping you to see them become a part of your day-to-day life.
Blessings,
What's New at GoddessLife

Retreats – It may seem like 2010 is way in the future, but its only next year! The retreats are beginning to fill up and I am offering a special discount and payment plan this month to get you committed to taking a trip of a lifetime! Come to Hawaii and Greece with me - all the details are below!
GoddessLife 101
Join me each month in this section as I teach you simple tips to living a fuller, healthier and fun life. You are a goddess and it is time to start living that way!
Lesson #18: Make your dreams come true and turn your goals into reality.
Dreams, wishes, desires, wants, passions, goals, longings, cravings, yearnings that shimmer on luminescent stardust and beyond. Delightful these all are, indeed. Some could actually wake you up each morning; inspiring you to go to a job you loathe. You might find yourself daydreaming about your ideas imagining, “If only…” or “when…” There are at bare minimum 1001 excuses of why you can’t or shouldn’t live your heart’s desires, but one truly good one why you should. It’s YOUR life.
But what actually is the process of making a dream become reality? Click here to read entire blog in which I break it down into 5 simple steps and read how August’s Goddess of the Month danced her way to her husband sending her on the GoddessLife trip to Greece!
Inspirational Goddess of the Month
Name: Emma Warhurst
Living: Hull, UK
Story:
I have been using the Cardio Bellydance DVD for the past three months and I'm really impressed with the DVD and with the Goddess Workout concept. I practice around four or five times a week and I never feel like I have to force myself to exercise because I actually look forward to doing the workout. I can really see the difference that bellydance has made to my body already, especially to my hips, thighs, waist and arms. Dolphina is inspirational and I feel so much better about myself now, not only because I look better (although I do) but also because Dolphina has helped me to have a much better attitude about my body. And as if looking and feeling better wasn't enough, I'm also learning bellydance! I'm really grateful to Dolphina for being such a positive role model for women and I hope that one day I'll be able to take a class with her in person. And to get more, I've ordered the Warrior Goddess ( called Bellydance for Weightloss in the UK) and I'm looking forward to trying it when it arrives.
Favorite Goddess Workout move: hip drops from Cardio Bellydance DVD
Favorite indulgence: designer perfume
Dream job: talk show host
Legendary Goddess of the Month
Oprah Winfrey
No one has faced more obstacles and manifested bigger dreams than the one and only Oprah Winfrey. She is an American media personality, Academy Award nominated actress, producer, literary critic and magazine publisher. Best known for her self-titled, multi-award winning talk show, it is the highest-rated program of its kind in history. She has been ranked the richest African American of the 20th century, the most philanthropic African American of all time, and was once the world's only black billionaire. This bio is simply the "highlights" of this iconic woman's life.
Winfrey was born into poverty in rural Mississippi to a teenage single mother and later raised in an inner-city Milwaukee neighborhood. She experienced considerable hardship during her childhood, including being raped at the age of nine and becoming pregnant at 14; her son died in infancy. Sent to live with the man she calls her father, a barber in Tennessee, Winfrey landed a job in radio while still in high school. She began co-anchoring the local evening news at the age of 19. Her emotional ad-lib delivery eventually got her transferred to the daytime talk show arena, where she boosted the third-rated local Chicago talk show to first place. She then launched her own production company and it became internationally syndicated. Credited with creating a more intimate confessional form of media communication, she is thought to have popularized and revolutionized the tabloid talk show genre. By the mid 1990s she had reinvented her show with a focus on literature, self-improvement, and spirituality.
In 1985, Winfrey co-starred in Steven Speilberg's epic film adaptation of Alice Walker's Pulitzer-Prize winning novel, The Color Purple. She earned immediate acclaim as Sofia, the distraught housewife. The following year Winfrey was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The Color Purple went on to become a Broadway musical and opened late 2005, with Winfrey credited as a producer.
Winfrey publishes two magazines: O, The Oprah Magazine and O at Home. She has co-authored five books. In 2002 Fortune called O, the Oprah Magazine the most successful start-up ever in the industry.
In 2006 she became an early supporter of Barack Obama and one analysis estimates she delivered over a million votes in the Presidential Election.
Goddess Movie of the Month
From Gidget to Gilda - from Film Noir to Romantic Comedy - the heroines of these girl-power flicks have the Goddess attitude in spades. Each month I will feature one of my favorites. Email me your favorites.
Dare to Dream: The Story of the U.S. Women's Soccer Team (2005)
"Dare to dream" is a worthy representation of women who achieve, against all odds, a standard of excellence and ability in the world of soccer. It is a truly inspirational story for anyone, but especially for young women. It is the story of the USA Women's Soccer Team and shows their courageous rise from obscurity to glory in the historically male centric American sports scene. I was so captivated by the emotional and educational aspects of the Team's struggle to achieve validation and greatness that I incorporated this DVD into my library immediately. A must have for anyone with a dream!

Career Bliss: Secrets from 100 Women Who Love Their Work by Joanne Gordon
Meet Leslie, a gallery owner in New York City; Donna, a pharmaceutical sales manager in Texas; Lynne, an animal trainer in Utah; and Betsy, a CEO in California. These women and ninety-six others are members of The Happy 100, a diverse group of women who love their jobs unequivocally. While many workers across America feel bored, unrecognized, and unchallenged, these women greet each new workday with pleasure and a sense of anticipation.
What’s their secret? There are concrete connections between each woman’s job and her unique combination of skills, character, and personality, and Be Happy at Work highlights them through candid snapshots of their working lives and career journeys.
Here are the inspiring stories of a chef at the South Pole, a scientist, a judge, a forest ranger, an investment banker, and a Manhattan doorperson, among others. The Happy 100 are all real women whose career stories will help you find yourself in their company. Be Happy at Work proves that loving one’s job is not a luxury for the lucky–it’s a real, attainable possibility for every woman, everywhere.

Edgar Allen Poe Comes Alive: Celebrate his 200th Birthday!
"Edgar Allan Poe Comes Alive!" stars Scott Craig Jones as Poe, who regales the audience, oftentimes humorously, with tales about his life, death, and writings. Jones masterfully performs "The Conqueror Worm," "Spirits of the Dead," "The Raven," "Eldorado," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Masque of the Red Death,"
"Annabel Lee," and "A Dream Within A Dream" in their bone chilling entirety. This is an exceptional night at the theater.
Jones first performed Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" for his high school drama class final exam in 1980 (he got an A). Since then, he has starred in more than 50 professional plays with thousands of performances at dozens of theaters, worked in many improv groups, and appeared in a few small movies like "The Benzedrine Monks of Santa De Monica" and "Teen Wolf Too" and a couple of TV shows like "Providence" and "The Edge." I contemplated previous desires and began to break down the steps (click here to read blog) of what made these wishes transform from floating stardust to becoming reality.
Blessings,

Greetings everyone! This is one of my favorite pictures of all times because it shows the joy of dancing - and it reminds me of all my wonderful students who participate every year in my classes and recitals.
Below is the listing of FALL classes as well as tidbits that will help you on your journey through this wonderful experience we call BELLY DANCE!

Fall Classes
www.amirajamal.com has just been updated!
Boston (begins 9/14): Monday nights: 7PM-8:30PM - Advanced Intermediate and Advanced/Professional Students: This Fall, after working a full year on classical Arabic music, we are going back to the basics of a five-part American Cabaret show, with all the fixins! This will include veil, double-veil, drum solos, Karsilima, cane, and much more. We will work with the Top-40 "most likely" American Cabaret songs. On nights that we have dancers signed up for peer-critique on their performances we will run later than 8:30 at no extra charge.
Wellesley (begins 9/15): Tuesday nights: 6:00-7:00PM; Framingham (begins 9/9): Wednesday nights: 7-8; Natick (Please check with me regarding start date for the Fall) 8:30AM on Tuesdays. All these classes will be:
Bellyrobics and Beginner Belly Dance. This is a fast-paced class designed to give students a strong fitness workout while introducing you to basic moves. No prior belly dance experience is necessary.
Framingham (begins 9/12): Saturday mornings: 9:30: Advanced Beginner and Intermediate Technique (drills & zills); 10:30: Advanced Beginner and Intermediate: Performance Skills (similar to Boston description but more for "newbies")
Always Available: Private instruction in Framingham
Another Hint from Language of the Dance: Tips, Techniques and Stories (many of the steps mentioned in this article can be seen on the CD-Rom which comes with my book)
DIMENSIONS AND TEXTURE
"Creative growth is an "unfolding" from within the individual, and not the result of "stuffing in" from the outside."
Henry Schaeffer-Simmern, "The unfolding of Artistic Activity," Berkeley: University of California Press, p. 198.
When I wrote my book, I included Dimensions and Textures under the Stage Presence section because using dimensions and textures set apart a professional from an amateur. It is all part of the package of stage presence that makes one dancer shine and another dancer not. Using dimensions and textures makes someone else's step your own. You can change the angle, add a facial movement or hand gesture, or layer to your heart's content. Your Figure 8 can be like no one else's. The steps are what your teachers have given you. The dimensions and textures you chose to use in any given moment are all your own.
There are many factors that make up dimensions and textures in dance. Read through the following list and think about what movements you could combine them with to create steps and dance your own dance:
1. Level Change
2. Pulsing
3. Layering
4. Use of Air Space
5. Use of Floor Space
6. Angle
7. Speed & Energy
8. Size of Movement
9. Direction of Movement
10. Accents
11. Facial Expression
12. Hand Expression
Last month I discussed the first six things on this list. This month we move on to #7-#12. You can find a link to my worksheet for these exercises by going to my homepage and then going to the bottom where there is a link that says "Dimensions."
7. Speed & Energy: This is a little difficult to describe in words, but it is such a good example of varying speed & energy within one step it's a perfect example. Let's take the Figure 8 with the chiftitelli rhythm. Start on the back of the right hip coming forward. Swiftly make that first loop on the one (DUM). Cross over slowly during the next three beat (Tek Tek-a Tek). Swiftly finish the left side loop on the fifth beat (DUM). Quickly make the right loop on the following beat (DUM). Make just a fraction of the left loop on the next beat (Tek). Pause on the final beat.
DUM (Right Loop)
Tek Tek-a Tek (cross over to the left)
DUM (Left loop)
DUM (Right Loop)
Tek (cross over to the left)
Tek (Pause)
You are now ready to begin the pattern again starting on the left side. Not only are you varying the speed but you are varying the energy as well.
Some of my Favorite Quotes
This month, given the plea to ask you to send some support for our sister dancer, I thought I would like to share some quotes about generosity:
"The wise man does not lay up his own treasures. The more he gives to others, the more he has for his own."
Lao Tzu
"Generosity is not giving me that which I need more than you do, but it is giving me that which you need more than I do."
Kahlil Gibran
"To be able to practice five things everywhere under heaven constitutes perfect virtue. They are gravity, generosity of soul, sincerity, earnestness and kindness."
Confucius
"Don't say that you want to give, but go ahead and give! You'll never catch up with a mere hope."
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
"He who cannot give anything away cannot feel anything either."
Friedrich Nietzsche
"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."
Winston Churchill

This newsletter started in January 2009. If you would like me to send you any back copies please let me know at amirajamal@yahoo.com.
Ask Amira: This month's question: You have been teaching for 35 years now, what keeps you going?
I have to say that, of course, I love to belly dance, I love to teach belly dance, I love to write about belly dance, I love to talk about belly dance... These are the obvious.
But, the thing that really keeps me going is the wonderful sense of community. On a personal level, I have many many personal and family friends who have come into my life through my association with belly dance. Our friendships have evolved to the point where belly dance might not even be the reason we get together, or even be a part of the conversation. It was just the original glue that held us together. The ties that bind are solid cement now.
On a larger community level I have seen wonderful outreach fundraising throughout the years. Thousands of dollars were raised by the NBDA Boston Chapter for Hurricane Katrina survivors. Other NBDA Chapters have raised hundreds of dollars for animal shelters, cancer research, and women's programs and shelters. Single dancers or small dance groups have also raised thousands of dollars for various charities that are close to their hearts. The outpouring of support, no matter what the economy has been, has been unbelievably generous.
I am using this column this month to ask you to open your hearts and your wallets once again in support of a dear local dancer who recently lost her husband to cancer. She is on Cape Cod, and although I do not want to give her name here, many of you do know her as someone has given tireless support of the community. She is struggling at this point, especially since there was only token help ($50 in 4 weeks) from an agency that had offered help. In her words: "What they don't tell you, when there's illness, when it's the sole breadwinner, that the agencies who "help" expect you to wipe out all your savings, and spend your insurance down to the last penny before they will help. They expect you to be two months behind in rent before they will negotiate with your landlord. They rub you down to a point of destitute that has little hope of ever allowing you to come back and be safe, and warm."
I have a request and she has a request:
She writes: Please donate to American Cancer Fund, CancerCare or United Way. All of their coffers are depleted and the usual safety net for those in our dire state, who only need a few months of help, have been wiped away by the economy. Vote carefully, because changes in how we care for each other in time of dire need must change.
My request is that I would like to take donations for her in the form of Stop & Shop grocery cards. If anyone would be willing to help this wonderful dancer, I would ask that you consider PayPal'ing even $5 or $10 to me with the subject line: Grocery Card to amirajamal@yahoo.com, and as I accumulate $25 at a time I will purchase her a grocery card and send it to her.
My friend writes: "Asking is never easy, giving is even harder."
I thank you in advance for your generosity, and bless this community of dancers who look out for one another when times are tough.
Please submit your questions - about anything to do with belly dancing!
DIMENSIONS AND TEXTURES - Continued
8. Size of Movement: This is easy to describe with hip circles. After doing several "normal" sized hip circles, do one sweeping circle where your entire torso gets involved. This change of size can be done with many movements, whether in place or traveling.
9. Direction of Movement: This is a two-fold dimension. It varies from angling because it involves not just the angle of your body but the entire direction in which you move. One way to change the direction is just to change the direction in which you are traveling: Take the movement to the front, walk backwards with it, take it to the corners; change the direction of your pivot. The other way to change direction is to vary steps between pivoting and traveling.
10. Accents: A good example of this is what you would do while dancing a drum solo. Let's say you have a masmoudi pattern: DUM DUM Tek-a Tek-a DUM Tek-a Tek-a Tek-a. Remember, the DUMs are heavy and the Teks are light. Do this: Hit your hip down during the DUMs and do a knee shimmy during the Teks. This accentuates the accents by showing in your body the difference between heavy and light. This showcases the accents instead of doing all hip drops all the way through or shimmies all the way through.
11. Facial Expression: Do a Figure 8 with a smile on your face looking straight out. Repeat the Figure 8, but this time avert or close your eyes and have a neutral lip line. This change in your facial expression changes the whole tone of the move.
12. Hand Expression: Do the above exercise, but this time when your eyes are open and you are smiling reach your arms out in front of you, palms up, slightly cupped. Now avert your eyes, neutralize your lip line, and put both hands to your head, palms facing in, fingertips gently at your temples. A totally different look from #11 above just from the placement of your hands!

Re: SEPTEMBER BellyHappenings....
Wed, September 16, 2009 - 4:24 PMFrom HADIA (CAN):
www.hadia.com
Hi everyone and just a quick email to give you some updates before my departure for Turkey and Budapest tomorrow.
First of all, a huge thank you to everyone who attended my “Ba’eed Annak” master workshop in Montreal on August 20th. It was a truly wonderful experience for all and has inspired me to come back to Montreal for my 5th Annual Professional Oriental Dance Training, Ultimate Technique Week and Fabulous “Making the Most of your Music” Workshop with our brilliant Montreal Musicians. More details will be coming up soon, but we are tentatively booking August 9th (my birthday) to August 22nd for the event and we may have a nice surprise in store for you concerning our Soiree Orientale Performance.
I also want to thank the wonderful group of ladies who will be joining me for 2 unforgettable weeks in Turkey for making this another sold out event. We will have lots of photos and great stories when I return in October!!!
Another huge thank you to the Western Canadians for almost selling out my Level 1 Oct. 26th to 29th (only 2 spots left) and Level 2 Teacher Training (only 5 spots left) Nov. 2nd to 5th www.hadia.com/index.php and for showing such strong support for my workshops in Dafne’s Halloween Hip Fest, Oct. 31st to Nov 1st in Calgary www.bellydance.ca/occasions/details.php . It will be great to be back in Calgary for a couple of weeks of intensive training and visiting so hope to see you all there. Go Calgary, Go!!!!
Then it is off for a return engagement in Richmond, Virginia Nov. 14/15th, www.womenofselket.com/ then on to Toronto for another Level 1 Teacher Training Nov 21st to 24th followed by the final Level 3 Certification Nov. 29th to 29th. www.hadia.com/index.php
Then, I will welcome a brief respite at home to teach my first Manual Therapy in Myofascial Release workshop in Nova Scotia on December 4th to 6th. This was originally planned for early October, but my broken wrist definitely did require rescheduling to allow time for me to regain full function of my hand. I also plan to begin work on my new secret project before heading off to Brazil on January 5th to get settled into my new apartment and, inevitably, some more different and interesting trouble (more news on those details coming soon…).
Next, down to Dallas for workshops and a show on March 13/14th, en route to Japan for workshops and shows in Osaka, Hiroshima and Tokyo, then POSSIBLY another shorter “Magic of Bali” Dance and Teacher Training in April, due to popular demand, Kuala Lumpur on the way home and now you can take a breath!!!
I will have more information and links for some of theses upcoming events for you by the next update.
Thanks so much and wishing you a wonderful Indian Summer!!

CLASS INFORMATION
Welcome!
This email covers Fall 2009 Classes. I will be sending out the regular newsletter in October.

Dancing from the Heart ©
BOSTON - beginning this evening 9/14
As many of you know, I try to mix up the format and content every semester so that the class remains challenging and refreshing. This semester we are going to work from a standard song list, which includes over three dozen of the most popular belly dance songs (all Middle Eastern countries) that you will need in your repertoire in order to be the best educated dancer. My students can take pride in the fact that they are among the few (across the country) who can say to a live band: "Play anything," and not be confused or unfamiliar with the music.
This class is designed to meet the needs of students who are in, or beyond, an intermediate level, and who would like to work towards becoming a professional dancer, or work toward improving their craft to dance for recitals and student shows. This class is also highly recommended for newly minted professional dancers who have been out dancing on their own for less than 10 years.
All information for this class is here.
DROP INS WELCOME!
BellyRobics and Beginning Belly Dance
Wellesley and Framingham
beginning 9/15
(Framingham is already in session and the price will be pro-rated.)
This is a fast-paced class designed to give the student a strong fitness workout. NO PRIOR BELLY DANCE EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED. Whether you are a beginner looking to learn basic belly dance steps, a person looking for a different and interesting aerobic workout, or a current belly dance student looking for more drilling and technique, this is the class for YOU!
All information for this class is located here for Wellesley and here for Framingam.
Technique
Framingham
Saturdays: 9:30 (Classes are already in session but will be pro-rated)
This class is designed for students who have already taken belly dance classes. This class will cover intermediate steps and movements, with an emphasis on drilling and using finger cymbals.
Information about these classes can be found here.
Performance Skills: Framingham Saturdays: 10:30
(Classes are already in session but will be pro-rated)
Even if you are not looking to be a performer, this class will give you confidence and help you break out of any feelings of nervousness or limitations when you dance. This class is also designed for students who have had prior belly dance experience, and who would like to learn performance skills to build self-confidence and to learn more about improvisation and the various parts of a belly dance routine. If you want to take only this class without the 9:30 class you MUST have permission of the instructor.
All information for this class is located here.
This is the first time I am sending an email just with regard to classes. All classes are available as workshops, including how to teach the class, for those sponsors who would like to offer something special to your dance community. I will send out further information on workshop offerings in a later email.
Sincerely,
Amira Jamal
Amira Jamal - Let's Belly Dance!
p.s. - All classes, except those in Wellesley, can be pro-rated if you join after the session has begun, or if you will be away during any of the weeks the class is in session.

Workshop Descriptions:
Saturday November 14
Level 1 Technique
Here is your opportunity to focus on the material covered in Level 1 of the Suhaila Salimpour Belly Dance Format. Level 1 provides students with the building blocks to develop strength, endurance and knowledge; with these tools, students can progress to more advanced material. Students learn correct posture and positioning, movement internalization, specific muscle control, safe training and drilling methods, and the concepts of timing and downbeat. Be ready to work hard . . . and to walk away inspired.
Saturday November 14
Egyptian Style Choreography
From the creative mind of Suhaila, this Egyptian-style choreography is an exciting exploration of movement, pattern and musical interpretation. Be ready for muscle isolation, layering, timing variations, downbeat options . . . and those are just the starting concepts. Using her comprehensive and consistent format language, Suhaila clearly breaks down each move and choreography phrase into understandable pieces that layer and connect.
Sunday November 15
Taqseem Movements and Layering
You’ll never view a taqseem the same way again. In this workshop, students will learn to isolate muscle groups so different movements can be layered with variations in timing, downbeat, and movement quality. The combinations and possibilities are limitless, and students will learn the process of integrating layers with control and intent.
Sunday November 15
Tribal Fusion Hard Rock/Belly Dance Choreography
Whatever stylization you like, you’re going to love this Suhaila choreography. This piece has a tribal fusion hard rock feel, but it’s pure belly dance at the core. Be ready for muscle isolation, layering, timing variations, downbeat options . . . and those are just the starting concepts. HARD CANDY bellydance workout news reveal:
HARD CANDY Not yet shown on our website, but yes, it is indeed the ‘next chapter’ of our ‘Bellydance Workout’ series, following on the successes of “LUSCIOUS” and “LOVE POTION.” “HARD CANDY” is mostly intermediate in its level, but, even more important, it is different in its aesthetics. The movements and the music in HARD CANDY have a touch of fusion in them, and with a bit of a "hard edge." I have licensed the music from artists such as Nomadiqa and Shiva in Exile for this DVD. The vocabulary is more percussive and grounded, less ethereal and flowing than in Love Potion. Hard Candy will feature a lot of torso and hip isolations, and various percussive travel steps assembled into combinations. The difference in level is less than the difference in vocabulary. HARD CANDY feels different and new, to practice areas of the dance vocabulary differently from the ones that get the workout in LUSCIOUS and LOVE P! OTION. We are actually filming HARD CANDY this weekend! This time it will be Neon Sarah Skinner, and by Elisheva. Blanca was too busy with other things to participate in all the rehearsals for this one — but she will be at the filming just to stomp and cheer - and exercise quality control! Elisheva brings something new to the World Dance New York ‘Bellydance Workout’ series. You can see and feel the presence of Elisheva in the style of the HARD CANDY workout. A number of sections were choreographed specifically to fit Elisheva's dance style. It has that hard, percussive edge that comes from tribal fusion, but in the context of HARD CANDY it is inscribed into more traditional bellydance. Hard Candy will be released in January.

New Classes, Updated Schedule!
The schedule online is being updated often to reflect the most current information.
Changes include numerous new additions and adjustments to the Circus Arts track. Our Fire Arts classes will be taught by Mavi of DC, and Kamille of Rockabelly, who has studied intensively under our previously scheduled TribO Fire Arts teacher, Riz. (He will be unable to join us this year due to an injury.)
Our Acrobalance and Aerials classes are confirmed with sparkly Sadie Osterloh and Sparrow of Old Horsey. We are offering Swashbuckling again this year, as well as poi.
In the Business for Artists track, we have added some great items: for those just starting to teach, we have a class with Sulukule's Christy Fricks, Shaheen Alikhan shares nuances of professional etiquette, and TribO's own 'behind the scenes' wizard Reyna dawman shares her method for stage management 101.

FAQ: What To Bring?
Nourish your secret self at this educational and relaxing
getaway. Remember that all the laws of the Outside
World still apply at TribO.
Although indoor spaces abound, be prepared for an all-weather
experience. These North Carolina mountain days & nights can be
splendidly warm, bracingly cool, even downright damp.
Lodging, Potties, Showers, and Stuff
You do not need to bring a tent unless you choose NOT to stay in a
cabin. The only foods you need to bring are your snacks of
preference.
Every cabin is wooden, equipped with
lighting, private showers, and potties. Bring towels and shower shoes.
Every cabin has beds-a-plenty, either bunk beds or metal-spring
cots, all with mattresses. Bring your own bedding; sheets, sack or
blankets, pillows. Couples or families MAY wish to bring inflatable
beds to suit their needs, as the majority of beds onsite are singles.
The savvy camper may wish to bring tapestries to
hang around their bunk for a more palatial stay. Most every bed has a cubby for shoes etc., and small hanging-closets.
Traveling with kids? BRING THEM A COSTUME of some
sort for the annual TRIBO TREAT masquerade. Towels and swimsuits are good, as is bugstuff and sunscreen. The kids staff thank you for being prepared.
Groups
If you wish to camp with particular folks, please tell us when you register. If you have
special needs of any variety, please provide us with that info at the
time of registration as well: small children, disabilities, hopes of

From SUHAILA INTERNATIONAL:
Suhaila Salimpour...the Newsletter September 2009
Greetings from Suhaila
These last two months have been filled with so much wonderful progress. Our Digital Store has been launched and is doing very well. It is the wave of the future! Being able to download music (both a single song as well as an album) is very convenient in this day and age. Soon DVD's, as well as manuals, will be offered on the Digital Store. Plus, I will be recording 10 minute MP3 downloadable drills for you to practice to. I actually just came back from a recording session and it was so fun.
The Twitter Drills are a great way to practice your technique as well. Not only do we have Suhaila Format Layering drills that you can play with, but we also have a Jamila Day that will send you fun Jamila Salimpour Format drills to practice. Just another way to work on your skills and not become stale with our regular and instinctual drills. And they are fun...like trivia! The drills just pop up on your cell as a text so you can stop whatever you are doing and see if you can "do it". Dare ya!
The Level 2 Finger Cymbal Choreography Kit was launched as well. I'm so relieved that my required certification program choreographies are available to you now. It will make your weeklong workshop experience all the more powerful if you come into the week already knowing what you need to know as far as the test requirements for the choreography are concerned. My program is not easy....no no no...but having the tools to allow your experience to be a little less stressful is my goal.
We also just finished filming the Level 3 Finger Cymbal Choreography and it will be available on the Digital Store very soon. Keep a look out. As with the Level 2 Choreography, the kit comes with an instructional CD of the finger cymbal patterns broken down both right and left hand dominant, a DVD of the choreography broken down, and the written notes. You have no excuses now.
A huge CONGRATULATIONS to our recent level 3 dancers. Vashti, Ginger, Andrea, and Emily did a great job and made me very proud. Thank you for your dedication and hard work. You all not only did great at the weeklong/test but you really grew as women, which is the whole point.
Both my mother and myself were honored that Del and Isis honored my mother with a lifetime achievement award for her life's work in this art. The Ya Halla Ya'All festival was a huge success once again, and Mom's dedication was done the day before her 83rd birthday which made it all the more special. We were also able to show the documentary done on my mother in the 1970's which gave the audience a little education on the history of American Belly Dance.
We were also honored that Tamalyn was able to come to the studio as a part of her back roads tour and teach two workshops; Oriental Choreography and double veil. Her book"40 Days and 1001 Nights" is a gem and to be a part of this tour was special for us. Her workshop will be available at my Online Class site very soon, so keep a look out.
Last but not least.... Isabella started 6th grade. Wow...what happened? She was just a little girl and now we get our laundry mixed up. We had a great Summer touring Europe together and now it is back to reality. But what an amazing women she is becoming. My mom and I are so proud. You can see first day of school photos on my blog.
Check out my blog for Amy Sigil's Rodeo update. Luka and I are working on a promo for the documentary so keep an eye peeled!
Suhaila Editorial
Europe...
It had been two years since doing a European tour. I had taught a few workshops out of the country, but they were not a tour that was based on spreading the Jamila and Suhaila Salimpour Format for an extended period of time. I am just now returning from a month long tour in Europe, but as I write this on my return flight I feel like it was just yesterday that I left home.
This tour was especially exciting for me since it was also the first Suhaila Salimpour Level 1 Certification being offered in Europe. It took Olivia and I three years to prepare for this to become a dream come true and we were finally going to do it. I had met Olivia three years earlier in Germany while on tour there. From that workshop on she had dedicated herself to my Certification Program, coming out to “the Mother Ship” at least 2 to 3 times a year. It is very difficult to stay motivated with training all the way in Italy, but her dedication is a testament to her character. She will also be testing for level 3 in early 2010.
Not only did the level 1 three day sell out with 50 European women (some being their first time taking a Suhaila workshop let alone a certification workshop), but we had 35 people test from all over Europe. We then had a 2-day workshop open to anyone that wanted to just “check it out” or maybe not focus on technique since I taught choreography for those two days as well as "Drills That Kill". I was so proud of how well the Certification went and the level of students in the workshop. Olivia had been preparing her students and fellow dancers for a long time before my arrival. She also held once a month master classes to “Prepare for the Level 1”. She ordered level 1 study guides early on and used the manual as a workbook for those that do not understand English very well. She encouraged everyone taking the workshops to study with my online classes so they could see what they were in for. ;-) They did all their homework, Olivia’s master classes paid off, and their time online with me made this workshop very satisfying on many levels. Next year we will bring both level 1 AND 2 to Milan in June 2010. I can’t wait!
During my off time I took Isabella to the Opera at La Scala Theater. Two years ago the Opera was a highlight for her, so it was one of the outings she asked for when going to Milan. We got lucky this year since "Aida" was the feature and this production was out of this world. With a cast of at least 100, sets to die for and a symphony that was breath taking, Isabella and I would look at each other and rub our arms from goose bumps. It was magical.
Of course it didn’t hurt that it was Fashion Week in Milan either. Can I tell you how wonderful it is to just sit at a coffee shop with a capuccino and people watch all day? My all time favorite was watching the women in major stilletos on their Vespa Scooters running around town. I’m not even kidding either! Fantastic shoes filled the streets as well as people from all over the world with bags and bags showing famous logos on each and every one of them. Seeing the designers' collections early is so fascinating since I love design and always love the process.
One afternoon, after coming back from a day of shopping, we bumped into the Kenzo Fashion Show right in our lobby at the Grande Hotel De La Milan. It was amazing and the producer could see us all with our mouths open so she invited us in to watch first hand. We sat in the back as each model walked by, staring a blank gaze into a far away place with a very lifted chin. No smile took place, no crack in the "non-look look", no expression was the expression. But as each model came out, they noticed one little girl in awe, and with each lap around the runway they would break their character, look down at Isabella and wink. Since (apparently) someday Isabella wants to be on America’s Next Top Model, this made her day. We went back to our room and she proceeded to imitate the models' walk. Of course me being me, I kept focusing on how skinny they were and how being healthy was more important. But I’m afraid Tyra might still see her yet.
The language, the coffee, the fashion, the history, the Opera, the food... oh the food. I was in heaven and hope that anyone wanting to test might think about Milan 2010. How fun! And Olivia’s new studio is amazing. We spoke of her dream of opening her own studio 2 years ago and it is so exciting to actually see it take shape. I remember going to the building years ago that was just a shell and now to see it all finished even better than I could have imagined made me very proud. The area surrounding it is magical as well. We would eat lunch each day at a little restaurant across the hall that catered to our organic, vegetarian needs as well as my kid's passion for pasta. And of course, we always ended with a cappuccino!! I couldn’t have prayed for a better studio for Olivia and I feel so lucky that her studio is the European House of the Certification Program. We did it!!

Making It Through Level 3
by Renée Drellishak
My first encounter with Suhaila was via her Stretch & Tone video, which I purchased way back when the interview bits were still spliced between the workout sections. I appreciated the conditioning focus, but had no idea how it related to her technique, or even that she had a technique. Years later she came to Seattle to do a series of 1-day workshops. I had reached a point in my dancing where I didn't really understand how to improve, in that mysterious "intermediate" level in my class where I could see distinctions between myself and beginning dancers but couldn't have necessarily explained what they were. Suhaila's workshop was a revelation. It was road map with clear and precise directions, which I was elated to have.
I attended my first weeklong workshop in September 2001, shortly after 9/11. A number of the workshop participants had canceled, afraid or unable to fly, so there were about a dozen attendees, 5 TAs and Suhaila. With that much personal attention there was no slacking, no hanging out. I worked harder than I ever had in my life, sweated so much my dance clothes were soaked through, raged and cried at my body's inability to do the things that my brain was telling it to do. My calves were so sore by day 3 that I couldn't walk upright and while getting up from the toilet I lost my balance, fell against the towel bar, and gave myself a black eye. It was the best dance week of my life.
I certified Level 1 in June 2002, Level 2 the following October. I figured if I averaged a Level a year I'd be done with the format in 5 years. Hah! I had not realized that the difficulty of the levels increased exponentially, nor did I fully understand how deep this rabbit hole went.
In 2003 I attended the first Level 3 weeklong and got a peek down that rabbit hole. Holy s**t! All of the drilling in Levels I and II did not prepare me for the emotional work in Level 3. On the first day I could tell the girls from the studio were nervous about something and came to find it was about the emotional work. "Yeah, whatever, " I thought. I was more concerned with the drills and choreography. I had my emotional baggage all packed up, nice and neat. Little did I know that Suhaila knew just how to pop the clasp so that it would explode all over the room. Mind you, this wasn't gratuitous emotional torture. She didn't try to make us fall apart, rather her goal was to help us delve into our psyches and present authentic emotion instead of "acting sad" or "acting happy." [Note to the uninitiated, there are no "happy" songs.] On the second day I sat in my rental car, sobbing and blindsided by my own emotions, for 20 minutes before I could get on the freeway and drive back to my cousin's house where I was staying. I had called before I left the studio and she met me at the door with a glass of scotch and a bubble bath running in the bathroom, and she did this every day for the rest of the week. I went back to Seattle spent and amazed. It was 3 years before another Level 3 workshop was scheduled. I was scared because I knew what was coming, but I threw myself into the work, had a great time, and when Suhaila announced she would start holding the workshops every six months I was thrilled.
In August of 2008, after 8 years of studying the format, I tested for Level 3. Along with the other testers, I had to submit a number of projects before the workshop-papers, a choreography, a documentary about my dance world. The physical portion of the test began the moment we set foot in the studio on Monday morning, 5 of us being graded while the other workshop participants worked alongside us, witnessing our process and supporting our efforts. We had to dance the two test choreographies in front of the whole group, not just do them, but truly dance them. No one held back an ounce of energy or emotion. Suhaila made it very clear that we had to bring it, and it was a tour de force. On Friday at the culmination of the workshop, Suhaila had us all stand up, and, in tears herself, told us how proud she was and that we had all passed. It was a long road, and afterward I was stunned that I had been able to accomplish so much-more than I had ever expected.
As I write this I have just returned from the inaugural Level IV workshop. I was gratified that on the second day when we had to bring our emotional perspective with maybe a minute of preparation, I was able to do so. That when asked to absorb a choreography a day (and not just any choreographies, some of Suhaila's most advanced choreographies. With finger cymbals!) I was able to at least muddle through. This is not to say the workshop wasn't hard. On Tuesday I had a moment, that moment that we all have, again and again, where I wondered what the hell I was thinking and whether I even belonged there. Some of the other women in the workshop, women I have known for years, who have seen me lay my soul bare and who have laid theirs bare in return, talked me down, reassured me, in that way we do for each other. We commiserated throughout the week, reminding ourselves that we were not actually expected to master Yanna Yanna in one afternoon, that this was merely the overview so that we could take these choreographies home and work on the over the next year or two (or five, or ten.) The experience really highlighted for me that I am a totally different dancer than I was 8 years ago. I am a different person.
The naïve reader might read this and think, "My god, all that sounds awful! Why would you do that to yourself? This Suhaila person sounds like the Marquis de Sade!" First, nothing could be further than the truth about Suhaila. Yes, she demands that we work hard, in most cases harder than we've ever been asked to work. But she asks this because she knows we can. She sees the potential in every dancer and will do whatever she can to help that dancer realize it. I have seen her give, time and time again, exactly what each dancer needs, from compassion and support to tough love. I have seen her spend 10 minutes trying to get a dancer to articulate what a particular song means to them. I have seen her watch a dancer walk in late to a Level 3 workshop and demand that that dancer go and write a letter explaining why she would be allowed to stay in the workshop. I have seen her down on her belly on the floor, nose to nose with a dancer too terrified to move and unable to speak, and watched as she has looked in their eyes and whispered words of strength and compassion. At the end of every day of a Level III workshop, she leaves carrying the emotional burden of every dancer in the workshop. She carries our secrets and our fears for us, to free us to dance.
Anyone who thinks this format is about being able to squeeze your glutes has missed the point. This format is about becoming the most fully developed artist you can be. Yes, it demands precise technique, but that technique is a means not an end. That technique enables you to express your artistic vision without technical limitation. But it is the artistry, the statement of the artist, the ability of each dancer to put herself on stage and say, "Here. This is who I am and what I feel," that this format is truly about. And that is why I do it.

Yippee Kay Yaaaaayyyyyy!!
Yes I did it!!! I rode that horse and I was the best damn Rodeo Queen you can imagine. It was my first time in a long time on a horse. Geez, I think the last time I was on one I was 24. I have ridden Camels but that doesn’t count, now does it??? lsabella’s advice was,“It’s just like an undulation down to up Mom. You can handle it.”
When Amy Sigil contacted me regarding being the “Rodeo Queen” I thought it was a joke. She comes up with so many wacky ideas that I don’t know what is real sometimes and what is fantasy. (But the point is that it is the same really.) So when she started describing the Rodeo concept, I fell in love with it. The passion and love she had for this day and community of dancers and characters was going to be such a treat. I don’t think I truly GOT the concept until I drove up the road and saw the actual town where the event would be held...
