YASMINA of CAIRO
Yasmina, 'The English Rose of Cairo', has studied, performed and lived the world of oriental dance for more than 25 years. Discovering the form in Morocco in 1983, she began training in London with various teachers, and performed in many of the capital's Arab nightclubs during the late 1980's. Then she began accepting contracts abroad, including India, and an eighteen-month tour of Italy. In 1989 Yasmina began performing regularly in the Middle East, leaving London to dance full-time. Starting with a six-month stay in Morocco, a fitting return to the place where her original passion had been kindled, she danced in many Middle Eastern countries including Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates (Dubai and Abu Dhabi), Syria and Jordan, before arriving solo in Egypt in the summer of 1995.
Redirecting her style to modern Egyptian with the help of Raqia Hassan and Ibrahim Akef, she quickly secured a contract at the Meridien Heliopolis, where she performed nightly for 3 years. Yasmina has remained in Cairo ever since, appearing with her orchestra at major Cairo venues such as Safir, Pyramisa and the Semiramis Intercontinental hotels, the Nile Maxime, Tivoli Heliopolis, as well as hundreds of weddings and parties in Cairo and around Egypt.
For the past ten years Yasmina has travelled to teach at sold-out workshops and festivals world-wide, and continues to perform and to study the dance, firmly believing that "it is an ongoing journey of discovery from which you never stop learning." She is a founder member of the Farha Tour, a traveling Egyptian show which has so far toured the UK twice. This is her US/NYC debut!
In 2002 she gave birth to her son, Azzedine, and has widened her cultural understanding of Egypt by coming full-circle and incorporating her original training into her life; she works as a photo-journalist in Cairo and writes regularly for several Egyptian and foreign publications. Her deep knowledge and immersion into the local oriental dance culture enriches her teaching. Add to that her ability to break down and explain the movements in English.
Yasmina says: "The day I was swept away by the sounds of Egyptian music and took my first steps down the road of oriental dance, I could never have imagined where that road would lead. To me, this dance has brought much joy, fulfillment, and depth of self-expression, as I believe it has and will do for countless others."No matter how small or great a part it plays in your life, it is always life-enhancing and ultimately good for the soul."

Re: OCTIBER BellyHappenings....
Mon, October 12, 2009 - 12:00 PMFrom DOLPHINA (CA):
www.goddesslife.net
October 2009
Greetings
Dear eGoddess community,
I recently made the shocking discovery that my lifestyle is not as eco-friendly as I thought it was. I considered myself a tree-hugger with a penchant for sequins, lingerie and bubble baths - a glamola girl! Other than my proclivity for these luxury items, I thought I was doing everything I could to not harm the environment. My awakening happened when I attended a "Green Goddess" party last week where I learned that my personal footprint on this earth was much deeper than I believed. (Read the list of what I learned) Now, I have lived a green lifestyle since I was born. I was raised by granola-eating, commune-living, eco-friendly parents in San Francisco and Morocco. We recycled, made our own soap and wore second hand clothing. Growing up in San Francisco deepened my commitment to environmental sustainability. It was the first city to recycle, currently makes more profit through recycling than disposal and city officials are now about to make recycling and composting mandatory for each and every person in their fair city. However, there are a growing number of ways to be eco-conscious and I am just learning about them!
After attending the party, I was inspired to dedicate this newsletter to not just living a 'green' lifestyle, but being a "Green Goddess". Because living a green lifestyle does not have to be all about tree hugging. If you dye your hair, love manicures, and just can't get enough sequins on your bellydance costumes, you can be glamola, too! Living green is not about changing who we are: it's about adjusting who we are.
I love to hear from you, so please feel free to write me with your green ideas and lifestyle changes.
Check out in this month's newsletter our newest addition: Goddess Technology
Blessings,

GoddessLife 101
Join me each month in this section as I teach you simple tips to living a fuller, healthier and fun life. You are a goddess and it is time to start living that way!
Lesson #19: Plant an organic garden and save money!
While First Lady Michelle Obama planted an organic garden at the White House with seeds that cost only $200, you can buy a wide variety of seeds for a smaller garden for less than $20! You can't beat the price when you compare it to your monthly grocery bill. In face, gardening can save you hundreds of dollars in food each season you grow your own. What better way to get fresh, locally grown, organic vegetables and herbs than in your own home?
For those that have a limited space, container gardening on a deck, balcony, a wall or in a sunny room is a great way to produce some of your own food. I once lived in a little house in Santa Monica (I called the Coconut) with a small yard. I created a fabulous garden that was about 4 feet by 10 feet. I had pet bunnies that loved to hop around my yard so I planted all kinds of vegetables for their enjoyment. They could hop right over and have a delicious feast. And I had a salad available to me anytime I wanted! It was a very happy and refreshing household! Take it from me, nothing is a therapeutic as gardening! The smells, the textures, the life allegories...the tender budding shoots must be treated gently, just like our own budding dreams and thoughts; weeds are everywhere and must be pulled out by the root so the little plants can grow - just like our dreams; and there must be plenty of space - no crowding! And of course, it takes rain ( or at least water) AND sunshine for a garden to grow into its potential. So, cherish the rain in your life! It's how we grow.
And for those who have no space at all for a garden, buying local and organic is becoming easier and easier as more local markets spring up and expand around the country.
Click here to follow these ten tips to get you started on your garden.
Inspirational Goddess of the Month
Your stories of how The Goddess Workout has transformed your life serve as great inspiration to me and now I want to share it with other Goddesses!
Name: Lori Silverman
Living: Manhattan Beach, California
Story:
I really miss The Goddess Center and loved the four years I attended classes, parties and workshops there. I wanted to share that I had a baby (beautiful baby boy Rowan) and I kept up practicing bellydancing all through my pregnancy. In fact, I found that it worked wonders for my bouts of 4am insomnia: I'd get up and slow repetitions of Goddess Salutations in the dark to help clear my racing thoughts. So it was a natural progression to use bellydance for comfort in labor. I bellydanced through a lot of the labor - it really helped me to cope with the contractions! I never wanted to be in the bed, I was only happy when I was up on my feet doing hip circles and figure 8's! The circular movements, done slowly and simply, were the most natural thing in the world...it was exactly what my body was craving to ease the tension. I managed to get through without any pain medication, as I wanted, and I know that dancing was a big help in focusing my mind and body throughout that long, exhausting day! It really made it clear to me: nothing can compare to the female body in motion.
This picture (by chance) was taken the morning of the day I went into labor, 2 weeks before my due date:)

Legendary Goddess of the Month
Each month I will feature a woman who embodies the highest potential possible expression of her nature. Honoring the brilliance in other women will help all of us on our path to living our own true potential.
First Lady Michelle Obama
We all know Michelle Obama as the First Lady of the United States, but she is so much more, including a First-Rate Green Goddess!
Reared in a blue-collar home on Chicago's South Side, the First Lady began her illustrious education in the Chicago public school system. She proceeded to graduate from Princeton University in 1985 and Harvard Law School in 1988. She is a lawyer and a former Chicago city administrator and community outreach worker. She has worked in the offices of Chicago's mayor and its planning commission, headed a career-training program for young adults and directed community affairs for the University of Chicago and its medical center.
She married Barack in 1992 and they have two daughters, Malia (born 1998) and Natasha (born 2001).
She caught the eye of a national audience at her husband's side after he delivered a high-profile speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004 and then was elected that year to the U.S. Senate. In 2007 she scaled back her own professional work to attend to family and campaign obligations during Obama's run for president. She became First Lady with his inauguration on January 20, 2009.
She was inaugurated as a "Green Goddess" on March 20, 2009 when she planted a 1,100 square foot edible garden on the South Lawn of the White House. Her hope is to educate children about locally grown food, inspiring them to eat healthier and encourage their families and community to follow suit.
The edible garden has over 55 varieties of fruits and vegetables, as chosen by the White House Kitchen Staff. According to assistant head chef, Sam Kass, the cost of the organic seeds and mulch was only $200. They planted tomatoes, tomatillos, cilantro, various lettuces, spinach, swiss chard, collards, kale, arugula, berries, herbs, including anise hyssop and Thai basil. Also in the garden are two hives for honey and a compost pile.
First Lady Obama, along with 23 5th graders from Bancroft Elementary School, began the garden by digging up the soil, then planting and eventually harvesting the vegetables on June 16th. The White House Kitchen Staff plan their meals around the vegetables that are in season. Food grown in the garden has been ingredients for family meals as well as for state dinners and other Official White House events.

Goddess Movie of the Month
From Gidget to Gilda - from Film Noir to Romantic Comedy - the heroines of these girl-power flicks have the Goddess attitude in spades. Each month I will feature one of my favorites. Email me your favorites.
Erin Brockovich
Julia Roberts shines as the real-life Erin Brockovich, a dogged, unabashed crusader for justice against polluters of the environment.
Broke and desperate, the twice-divorced single mom bosses her way into a clerical job with attorney Ed Masry (Albert Finney), who's indebted to Erin after failing to win her traffic-injury case. She accidentally finds out that several hundred unsuspecting residents of Hinkley, California are dead or dying from poisoned water that has exceedingly high levels of toxic chromium.
Erin takes a case against the corporation that is spoiling the environment with the toxic substance, not only poisoning the water supply of the town in California, but is also responsible for the illness and death of many residents.
Brockovich teaches all of us a lesson in doing what is right for the environment and people. She doesn't give up because it's hard or because she is fighting major corporations that are richer and more powerful than her.
Soon, we see Erin gaining ground against the corporate greed and secrecy as she uncovers the details necessary to win a court case against the company that, while not returning individual claimants to health; at least they gain the financial strength necessary to withstand the consequences of exposure to toxic chemicals.
Although these two films do not have inspiring Goddess protagonists, they are both important environmental movies to see:
An Inconvenient Truth

Goddess Book
From Biographies to Self-Help - the wisdom found on these pages will help guide you on your GoddessLife journey. Each month I will feature one of my favorites.
Silent Spring by Rachel Carson
Rachel Carson started the environmental movement we now call "being green" with the publication of her 1962 book, "Silent Spring". Carson, a marine biologist who died two years after publication of the book, wrote this book when she received a letter from a concerned citizen lamenting the mass death of birds after a DDT spraying.
The book is written for the mass public and not just for scientists (though it has plenty of statistics to back up her conclusions). Carson's analysis of DDT and other synthetic chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides resulted in a deeply ominous conclusion: pesticides destroy the environment and threaten everything within the ecological system. Carson examined the composition of pesticides, revealing that synthetic pesticides have the ability to not only kill their intended targets, but they also move right up the food chain, eventually reaching the human population. Even worse, these chemicals cause tremors, paralysis, cancer and a host of other ailments. Carson proved these chemicals move on to succeeding generations of offspring through mother's milk and other biological processes.
What is surprising about Carson's book is that people knew about the effect of these poisons. Local governments kept spraying even when evidence showed it was a failure. Birds literally fell out of the sky while the trucks went through another pass through the neighborhood.
"Silent Spring" concludes with a call for sanity. Carson's answer to the insane escalation of chemical spraying is to seek out biological control methods. Many insects have natural enemies that if introduced into a problem area, will keep down pest populations.

Suhaila Endorsed DVD
Amy Sigil and UNMATA!!
I have paid my dues. I have tried to keep my art intact for my family legacy and daughter. I have tried to own all the art I produce, spending time and money trying to buy back masters (with my image on them). I have tried to make quality products for which I can hold my head up high.
As an artist, we feel lucky when someone wants us on their next DVD. “They want ME?…. little old me?” and we think it’s such a compliment and big break. We do our best and tell all our friends about this great opportunity. Most producers have a line-up of DVDs they are producing in a limited amount of time, and each artist has to fit into that schedule (usually with only one or two “takes”). The artist doesn’t really get to help design the set, create personality, or have the video truly represent herself. As viewers, we might learn a few good moves, but do we really “feel” anything?
It has been my dream to produce other artists and create an empowering foundation for them to grow. I want the artists to have a product that really represents themselves. I want artists I produce to own their own masters in a few years. I want each DVD to have a different look and feel that will have the viewer able to get a look inside the process. I want to offer artists the ability to create within the process of making the DVD and not just the “dance moves” in the DVD. I want to help artists the way I wish someone helped me.
Together with my co-producer, Luka Dziubyna, we have set out to create a platform for artists that has never been done before. With great pride, we present the first “Suhaila Endorsed Line” DVD featuring Amy Sigil and UNMATA!... Click Here To Read More

My best friend, whom I’ve known since Kindergarten, still lives in this area, too. From HADIA (CAN):
Introduction | Calgary | Toronto | Brazil and Beyond (including Bali) | Professional Training 2010
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What’s New in Hadia’s World??
Back in Canada again, the brilliant red, orange and gold leaves are falling and I’m looking forward to a wonderful autumn program before a winter far from the cold and snow.
Before the new news, I have to applaud all of the lovely ladies who joined us on out 9th Annual “Turkey - Gateway to the Orient” Tour for making it the most wonderful adventure, pleasure and unforgettable group experience and I was so happy to have been able to share and pass on my love for this country with them. I know that we have a whole new crop of Turkey and Turkish music and Roma dance addicts and stay tuned for their reviews and photos!
Then my return to Budapest after a 3 year absence was such a truly inspiring week! I am always so pleased to see how my very talented, expressive and faithful students continue to learn, grow and become even more brilliant on every visit. The three days of classes were all packed and the show was exceptionally wonderful. My hat is off to my beautiful Mercedes Nieto for her stunning dance, her amazing teaching skills and her constant energy that has developed and nurtured such a strong group of dancers who do justice to the true and beautiful art of oriental dance.
Two well deserved days of rest and relaxation, soaking in the famous Hungarian baths – October and 25oC – soaking up he sun and soothing mineral waters was a perfect way to end three over the top, full on weeks in 2 of my favourite places in the world. Then, after a quick over night in Istanbul with a wonderful private class with Reyhan Tuzsuz, my beloved Turkish Rom teacher, it was off for the long ride home.
Back on the continent, I am en route to my old stomping grounds of Calgary for sold out Level 1 and 2 Teacher Training PLUS a great line up of workshops and gala show with my friend, Cassandra, for Arabia Adorned’s Hallowe’en Hip Fest. I am really happy to have the time for a retreat in the breathtaking Rocky Mountains before tackling 2 super weeks! I think that there are still a few spots left for hip fest… www.bellydance.ca/
Then I am very happy to be back in Richmond, Virginia on Nov 14/15th with a lovely program of classical oriental, musical interpretation and dancing from the inside out – then play time with Turkish Rom. www.womenofselket.com/
My last stop before Christmas is Toronto, with Level 1 and 3 Teacher Training PLUS 2 very special workshops: "Body Logic Technique" and "Turkish Rom" topped off with a performance at my dear friend Roula Said’s wild and wacky FunkaBelly show!!! I still have a couple of spots left for Level 1 www.hadia.com/index.php PLUS the workshops are open to all dancers in the greater Toronto area, so don’t miss this chance for super solid training and great classes. before my reappearance at the Annual IBCC at the end of April. www.hadia.com/index.php
January 5th and it is off to Brazil to move into my new home in Salvador, Bahia, the epicenter of fun, music and dance in my favourite country. I will have updates soon on some workshops that I will be teaching between decorating, furniture shopping and FESTAS, not to mention Carnival!
Then, after a weekend workshop March 12th to 14th, in Dallas sponsored by the lovely Nadirah Joharah www.nadirahjohara.com/ , I depart for my tour of Japan – Tokyo, Osaka and Hiroshima – then Malaysia and another "Magic of Bali" Retreat 2010 April 1st to 14th, with Teacher Training Level 1, professional dance training and finally Teacher Training Level 2. All of the details will be up on my site very soon, so stay tuned. Then back to Toronto to welcome you in my workshops at the IBCC!!! www.bellydanceconference.com/
Scheduling and details for upcoming Teacher Training and Dance Workshops will be posted very soon, but MARK AUGUST 9TH TO 22ND ON YOUR CALENDARS for my 5th Annual Professional Oriental Dance Training Program with the Ultimate Technique Week and Making the Most of your Music Workshop and Gala with Canada’s most Brilliant Professional Arabic Musicians. Accepting audition DVDs now!!!

We recently found this quote by Martha Graham, and thought we could share it with you...
"I am a dancer. I believe that we learn by practice. Whether it means to learn to dance by practicing dancing or to learn to live by practicing living... In each it is the performance of a dedicated precise set of acts, physical or intellectual, from which comes shape of achievement, a sense of one's being, a satisfaction of spirit. One becomes in some area an athlete of God."

BELLY FACTS
Several bollywood films were shot in Afghanistan. One famous one was "Dharmatma" (1975 - directed by Feroz Khan. The other was "Khuda Gawah" starring Amitabh Bhachan, was shot in Kabul, Mazar-e-Sharif, and Kandahar. While this one flopped in India, it was a major hit in Kabul.

BELLY DANCE & MUSIC
This issue we feature the music and dance of Afghanistan. Several years ago, we were performing at an Afghani wedding, and the newly married couple featured a group of Afghani dancers at their reception. Not surprising at all how it resembles north Indian dance and music. The style of the dance is called Attan, a celebratory dance of Pashtu, is the traditional national dance of Afghanistan; its origin is the provinces to the south of Afghanistan where every celebration ended with this dance. The Beat is a traditional Afghan Beat of "mogholi" where no other Nation in the world uses this beat its a creation of Afghans of the Moghol dynasty. Afghan dance includes both male and female dances, though never mixed dances. At traditional engagement or wedding parties it is customary for female musicians and dancers to entertain the women while male musicians and dancers entertain the men. The national dance, a celebratory dance of Pashtu origin known as the attan, is performed in a large circle by male dancers, accompanied by an ensemble centered on the zurna and the dul. The drumming increases in tempo as the piece progresses, with the dancers responding to the rhythm with handclaps and exclamatory shouts of encouragement. The signature action of this style involves the swinging of the head to throw the hair, previously cut in a pageboy style, in sweeping arcs. The dancers lunge and turn in a crouching position while the music becomes ever faster. The Music is finished and the hosts along with bride and groom stand by the door to show their respect and thank the guests for coming to their wedding ceremony.
A popular style of Afghani dance is Khattak, not to be confused with kattak (KUH-thuk), a classical dance from northern India. Khattak is a martial-arts sword dance performed by men to upbeat music (featuring piper, clarion, and type of drum played similar to Indian bhangra). The men perform with swords and/or hankerchiefs and acrobatic feats.

Musical instruments:
Most of the traditional instruments used in Afghan music are Sitar, sarode, shenai, tabla, which are all typical in north India and Pakistan. Other classical instruments are datur, sorna, dilruba, ghichak, and rubab.
Styles of music:
Klasik (or classical), which incorporates instrumental and vocal ragas, taranas, and ghazals. Much of this is based on Hindustani melodies musical theories and terminology. However, Afghani style of ragas, in contrast to Indian ragas, are focused more on rhythm.
Pop music emerged in the 1950's and became popular until the 1970's. Amateur singers showcased their voices in the studio (Radio Kabul). The 1960's and 70's, the popularity spread also to countries like India, Pakistan, Iran, and Tajikistan.
Today's Afghani music can be roughly divided into traditional, modern and post-modern. Boundaries between these different categories are not clear cut but roughly reflect eras of pre Soviet, intra Soviet and post Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The influences of neighboring cultures is reflected upon Afghan Music. Since Music was banned by Taliban, most Afghan music during that period was created in exile. Afghan artists continued to produce music specially in the United States and Canada.
You can purchase Afghani music by contacting info@afghan.us
These days, singers from various backgrounds participate in the new hit Afghani tv show "Afghan star," (much like American Idol). As a result, pop music has now become even more popular with millions of viewers.
Season four winner Naweed Forugh
Hip-Hop became popular with the immigrants and the younger generation. Very similar to US hip hop with an emphasis on cultural sounds. It's sung mostly in Dari (Persian), Pashto, and English.
Bollywood While the recent popularity of bollywood has swept the world, Afghanistan has always taken a very heavy interest in it. The music, style, and instrumentation are so similar to their own popular music. Except during the suppressed years of music, Bollywood films and music still continue to be watched and enjoyed by many Afghani people of all ages and background.
STAR PERFORMANCES
Neena & Veena with Bollywood star, Shahid Kapoor, while shooting the bollywood hit, "Kaminey." Currently, the song we performed in with him, "Dhan de da" is in the top 10 bollywood charts!

BELLY HEALTH
Dancing Makes You Smarter
For hundreds of years dance manuals and other writings have lauded the health benefits of dancing, usually as physical exercise. More recently we've seen research on further health benefits of dancing, such as stress reduction and increased serotonin level, with its sense of well-being.
Then most recently we've heard of another benefit:
Frequent dancing apparently makes us smarter. A major study added to the growing evidence that stimulating one's mind can ward off Alzheimer's disease and other dementia, much as physical exercise can keep the body fit.

FILM: KHUDA GAWAH Oh...
Hm, tu mujhe qubool, main tujhe qubool
- You've accepted me, I have accepted you
Is baat ka gawah khuda, khuda gawah, khuda gawah
- The witness of this is God, God is the witness, God is the witness
Vai vai vai tere mere pyar ki, vai vai tere mere pyar ki
Oh, oh, oh, of your love and my love, oh of your and my love.
Is baat ka gawah khuda, khuda gawah, khuda gawah
- The witness of this is God, God is the witness, God is the witness
Ho koi ghulaam chaahe hai baadshah
- Whether one is a servant or a king
Ishq ke bagair zindagi gunaah
- Without love, life is a sin
Bas yeh sochkar maine jaan di
- Thinking just this, I gave my life
Vai vai, bas yeh sochkar maine jaan di
- Oh oh, thinking just this, I gave my life
Yaani dil diya, gawah khuda, khuda gawah, khuda gawah

Aaina hoon main, na todna mujhe
- I am your mirror, don't break me
Tod na magar na chhodna mujhe
- Don't break me, but don't leave me
Kehna tha yehi meri jaan mujhe
- I was going to say just this, oh my life
Valle valle kehna tha yehi meri jaan mujhe

Before the success of "Slumdog Millionaire," Bollywood had been popular with the people of Afghanistan and other parts of the Middle East for many years.
In this issue we feature a galloping movement taught in our bollywood classes. This dance movement is not only a popular bollywood dance movement, but has been seen in south Indian dance films as well. Plus, it's great for toning the obliques, thighs, and calves, as well as the upper body.
Starting position: Open your legs wide around 2 1/2 ft, and bend the knees, making sure they go over the toes. Back is straight and erect, and hands together in prayer position or "namaste." Shoulders down and away from the ears, and elbows lifted.
Movement: Step down on the ball of each foot - right first, then left, and then press the heels down - right heel, then left. That's it. Right toe, left toe, right heel, left heel. Start slowly at first. When you increase the speed, it will feel like a gallop. Keep your hands firmly pressed together isometrically using the muscles in your body.
Exercise: First, pick a favorite tune, preferably an Indian or bollywood song. To get in the groove, we recommend our cd INDI-HOP.
Start slowly, each count is one movement. Continue for around 1 minute. Now, double time. 2 movements is one count. You should feel like you're galloping. As you step on each toe, contract the oliques for extra toning. Continue the gallop for 2 minutes - or until you feel the burn!

Hey Twins -
: I had the extreme pleasure of watching one of your performances several weeks ago. It was wonderful! One of you did a mujra dance. Can you tell me what that is exactly? Even though my family is from Iran and Afghanistan, I was born and raised here, so I'm alittle naive. I really want to know, because my parents both grew up watching Bollywood movies, and they said bollywood had really become part of their own cultures.
Thanks so much -
Miriam K - Arizona
: Dear Miriam,
Mujra or Rabz is a form of dance originated by North Indian Tawaif or courtesans during the Mughal era. They are based on ghazals, thumris, or popular poems. The movements are kathak-based (north Indian classical dance). Most kathak related dances in Bollywood films are mujra. In Pakistan and in Punjabi stage dramas, it has become more seductive and less artistic
