From MARTA (DC):

Dancers and Friends,

My schedule is finally up for Spring 08 classes i will offer. My apologies for the delay in
posting the info up, life has been a little hectic lately.

I finally received my ATS Teacher Certification from FatChanceBellyDance , and attended
my second GS--this time at the mothership which makes it a much more intense and
fulfilling experience. AMAZING! With Suhaila's blessing at the Charlottesville, VA workshop
this past weekend, i will also be attending the Level II weeklong in April. I also can't wait
for my third 2-day workshop with Madame Raquia Hassan this May...(i will try to also
squeeze in another private session with her!!).

With all that in mind, i will be teaching the following:

:: SPRING 08 CLASS SCHEDULE ::

I am currently deciding on set dates for my specialty class, Flamenco Technique for Tribal
Belly Dance. It will take place at the Dance Institute of Washington (DIW) and it will most
likely be a short series class. If you are interested please email me at

Who Is Your April Instructor?
IRINA AKULENKO
Irina Akulenko is a performer, teacher and choreographer with a wild imagination and a burning passion for the arts of all genres. Although she discovered Middle Eastern dance purely by chance, her interest in expression started at an early age and was channeled into ballet training, in addition to piano lessons, chorus and drawing. However, belly dance became her main addiction which she sustained by seeking instruction with numerous New York-based teachers. For the last 7 years, she explored both Egyptian Cabaret and American Tribal belly dance and now enjoys fusing these styles as well as everything in between. Today, Irina is a member of two professional dance companies - BellyQueen and Alchemy Dance Theater, and is dedicated to continuing her dance education, always looking for new ways to be inspired. She is also a member of Public Urban Ritual Experiment (P.U.R.E.) and enjoys collaborating with other local artists. Furthermore, Irina holds a Bachelors degree in Political Science, and has a strong interest in women's issues and visual arts. irina@bellyqueen.com

    TEACHING FORMAT
Sadie and Kaya offer their students a fun, positive and nurturing atmosphere to explore movement and the proper techniques of belly dance. They have developed a diverse and comprehensive teaching format that stems from a depth of understanding in many forms of world dance and music. Whether you are interested in workshops, group or private classes, their knowledge of dance along with their eagerness to share it with their students will create an unparalleled environment of encouragement and learning. Sadie and Kaya do not focus on styles within Belly Dance, but rather techniques and proper execution of movements that lay the foundation and implement the tools necessary for the student to create or choose the style they wish to reflect.

Many of our classes now offer "The Tandem Training Method", an exclusive format developed by Kaya and Sadie. While one leads the class, the other walks around and visits with each student answering questions and correcting technique to ensure they get the most out of each class! We offer the rare experience of studying belly dance with two internationally recognized instructors, individually and often times together

    CLASS STRUCTURE
Each class will focus on protecting the body from injury by thoroughly warming up and working toward flexibility. We will also work on developing stamina and building the muscles essential for Belly Dancing. All classes end with a proper cool down.

The core of classes will focus on TECHNIQUE! TECHNIQUE! TECHNIQUE!
Posture is emphasized, the bodyline and center, fundamental in all dance forms, will be developed. An understanding of muscle control and the mechanics of movement will be developed. Classes also incorporate standing and traveling drills. Intermediate classes are offered to the disciplined student who has cultivated a full understanding of the basics. Intermediate classes combine other aspects of the dance such as finger cymbals (zills), how to count, dance and play zills to the multitude of Middle Eastern rhythms, foot patterns to add variety, layering and embellish traveling steps, veil work, balancing, history, short combinations and choreographies. Kaya and Sadie also coordinate student night's which allow the students to practice the dance and bring it all together with the element of performing. Our student showcases are intended to be a positive experience for all levels of students. We aim to nurture your confidence and help you progress to the next level as a dancer and performer, with the support of fellow students, family and friends

    From ASHARAH (VA):

Greetings everyone! I hope spring finds you well. I know I'm a little overdue for an update, and there's a lot going on this spring and summer. A new semester of classes has just started at Joy of Motion (there is still space available in both classes), and we'll soon be starting a new semester at Saffron Dance, where my classes will be moved to Thursday nights. I'm also teaching a host of workshops throughout the country, and I'll be performing all over the place!

If you haven't checked it out yet, I've started a little blog over on Blogger called "Bellydance Paladin". It's a place for me to share my thoughts about dance, small business, integrity in art, and self-expression. It's a bit like peering into my brain and seeing what happens in there when I'm not dancing. I hope that you'll check it out.

Also, I'm continuing to sell my instructional DVD, Modern Tribal Bellydance with Asharah, which has been getting rave reviews since its release. (No, really, check it out!) You can order directly from me by visiting my website.

For those of you not on the official mailing list, you can add yourself by visiting my Google Group and becoming a member.

Thank you all for your support and I hope see you soon!

    From BELLYQUEEN (NYC):

    Bonjour Bellyqueen and PURE Friends,

We have been in the enchanting city of Paris for the last few days, and have taught workshops to many enthusiastic students who have travelled from all over France, Switzerland and Italy to attend. Tonight is our first big show in Europe at the respected theater "Theatre of Institut du Monde Arabe" which has been sold out for several weeks. We are still recovering from jetlag, and a few sleepless nights caused by overdosing on too much fine French chocolate and excitement. It's been a pleasure to spend time with Anasma's wonderful Mother and her sister, Hella as well as see her home. Our sponsor here, Amana, treated us to a delicious french style home cooked meal last night.

We plan on visiting the Lourve museum and Eiffel tower tomorrow on our day off.

    Peace and shimmies,
    Kaeshi

PS. After our recent auditions we recruited the following female dancers to begin training with us, Blanca (NYC), Ashley Bull (Orlando), Crystal Dunlap (Michigan) and Marikit (NYC).

I am thrilled and very, very honored. I want to thank all the people who voted for me. It takes thousands of votes just to be nominated. But then the contest begins and it takes even more votes to win. I cannot thank you enough.

I have lots of NEWS and updates about my activities and the great things that my friends are doing. Here are the highlights and you can scroll down further for more details...

        NEWS:

THE FOLK TOURS FABULOUS 6TH ANNUAL MIDDLE EASTERN MUSIC AND DANCE CAMP WILL TAKE PLACE ON MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND - MAY 23rd - 26th, 2008 in Pennsylvania! (located approximately 45 minutes from Philadelphia, 2 hours from New York City and 3 hours from Washington, DC). Folk Tours is excited to announce our top notch instructors, musicians and dancers in a delightful woodland setting. Our dance teachers include: Fahtiem, Morocco, Artemis Mourat, Karim Nagi, Christina King, Ede Thurrell, Ibrahim Tunc and Tayyar Akdeniz. We are also proud to announce our special guest performer - the dynamic and fiery Aszmara! Our music teachers are Seido Salifoski, Karim Nagi, Ali Kahya, Souren Baronian, Mike Uzatmaciyan, Sami Abu Shumays, Rachid Halihal, Tayyar Akdeniz and SPECIAL GUESTS! We welcome all levels of musicians and dancers from professional to beginner! Experience the magic of singing, dancing, and making music in nature. Enjoy three hearty meals a day, dormitory style cabins or camping in the woods. There will be lots and lots of music and dance classes, nightly dance parties with extraordinary music, professional and student cabaret performances with live music, vendors, massage therapists, henna artists, bonfires and a get acquainted party. We have met many great people over the years and are looking forward to spending time with all our friends, old and new. Don't forget about the early bird special (register by April 11th in order to qualify for the discount).

THE 4TH ALATURKA MUSIC AND DANCE FESTIVAL WILL BE HELP IN ISTANBUL from July 6th - July 14th, 2008. Experience the unique flavor of the Middle East by studying with native dance stars! Our festival in 2007 was sold out and we are looking forward to next year. It is wonderful to see our attendees from all over the world join together for music and dance. Remember we have Egyptian and Turkish dance taught at this event. Please check the website for more details e2ma.net/go/1022467832...folktours.com/ I regret that I will not be going to Turkey this year with Folk Tours due to my other obligations but I heartily encourage you to support this event.

        NEW CDS:

        * Tayyar Akdeniz has a wonderful new Turkish music CD out now!!! This is an extraordinary instructional and performance music CD and the rhythms and songs are perfect for your Rromany AND your Turkish Oriental shows. There are 20 rhythms that are clearly taught. You can buy it from him at mailto:info@folktours.com?subject=.

*Yasmin has her 4th music CD out from her company Sands of Times and this one is entitled "Pulse of the Sphinx" and it is on drum solos. It is a performance and a teaching CD and it includes ten excellent 3 to 5 minute drum solos for shows, one drum solo from a concert in Cairo, an instructional track of basic drum solo rhythms and six practice drum solos for drilling. A wonderful instructional booklet is forthcoming to people who purchase the CD and this includes: the anatomy of a drum solo, an explanation of the rhythms, a history of Middle Eastern percussive instruments from ancient days to the present, finger cymbal patterns from an 18th century text and a bonus section on different types of hip shimmies. This and all of her belly dance CDs feature the Henkesh brothers - Khamis, Ramadan and Reda - who have reigned supreme in Egypt for over 30 years as the drummers to the superstars. Her other CDs include one entitled "Dancing with Genies" which contains two great Egyptian oriental dance routines and the best article on the history of Egyptian Oriental dance you can find anywhere! She has two other music CDs out: one on Taksim and one on Zar. All her CDs include the informative booklets that Yasmin has become famous for. There will be many future CDs on wedding music, Saidi and much more. All but the zar CD (for obvious reasons) are PERFECT for your Oriental dance shows! You can purchase all of her CDs from Yasmin at e2ma.net/go/1022467832...erpentine.org/ or from me.

        * I played finger cymbals on two cuts of one of Chris Marashlian's new CDs. This CD is great for Arabic and Turkish belly dancing. His other CD is easy listening music from Greece (don't be fooled by the name - this is lovely and elegant music, great for dancer cool downs or stress reduction). You can buy the CDs from Chris at: mailto:cm@creativeartistsproductions.com?subject=. I have now had the pleasure of playing finger cymbals on three commercial music CDs! I look forward to doing more of this in the future.

MY FUTURE RETIREMENT IN 4 YEARS: I announced this last year and have had some interesting replies. I have heard from people who expressed their sadness that I had quit dancing. I HAVE NOT, NOT, NOT QUIT DANCING NOR DO I INTEND TO!!!! I DO intend to retire from performing and touring and this will take place some time WITHIN THE NEXT 4 YEARS. I have no idea of the exact date but I am notifying you in case you thought of inviting me for a future workshop. I am accepting bookings for 2009 and beyond. I intend to keep dancing a great deal until I retire from touring. After that I will continue teaching and coaching locally, and I will be writing and researching dance indefinitely. But after 35 years of dancing and 16 years on the road, I prefer to be home more. I miss my husband and my parents need more of my help as they grow older. In addition to touring, I am turning my attention towards my future DVDs, to symposiums in the academic circles and to writing (and FINALLY rewriting) my articles, manuscripts and books. I will continue to work with Folk Tours indefinitely.

Cool places for future workshops: In the last 16 years, I have taught and/or performed in hundreds of workshops in 10 countries and 29 states in America (I have been to many places more than once and would love to come back for return engagements). I thought it would be fun to be able to say that I have hit all 50 states. I already have plans to teach in Utah, Montana, Indiana, Hawaii, Alaska and Australia, so that leaves only 16 more states! Therefore, I am particularly interested in performing and teaching workshops, master classes or specialty classes in the remaining states: Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Mississippi, South Carolina, Vermont and New Hampshire. I also want to go to or return to teach and perform in England, Italy, Russia, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, New Zealand, Switzerland and France. I can teach in French as well as English. If you want me to come to these states or countries, please contact your local sponsors and ask them to let me know. And, of course, I LOVE TO COME BACK TO PLACES WHERE I HAVE ALREADY BEEN. I have lots of new Turkish and Rromany (Gypsy) material and other material that is not specifically Turkish (such as drum solo, veil, taksim, improvisation skills, etc). Please go to the website for a list of my workshop topics (e2ma.net/go/1022467832...pentine.org/).

MY CALENDAR for 2008 is packed. I will teach and perform in Japan, California, Pennslyvania, Hawaii, Baltimore, Texas, Alaska, Indiana, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Alabama and the DC metro area. In 2009, I will be teaching in Australia twice, Texas, Montana, Pennsylvania, NYC and Utah. There are still a few dates available in 2008 and lots of dates free for 2009. See below for specifics and you can go to my website for more information and updates at e2ma.net/go/1022467832...erpentine.org.

MY NEW ARTICLES: It has been my privilege to write John Bilezikjian's life story for the online Middle Eastern Dance magazine, Gilded Serpent. I wrote an article for Zaghareet Magazine on "The Best Photo Shoot Ever" that describes a wonderful photo shoot I had with Carl Miller in North Carolina. www.carlmillerphotos.com/artie. I also have other articles on my site and some articles that you can order from my site: e2ma.net/go/1022467832...rpentine.org/.

TAYYAR'S NEWS: Tayyar Akdeniz will be in the United States from February until July of 2008 and he is now accepting bookings. See the camp and festival news above. Tayyar is also teaching workshops in NYC on April 20, New Jersey on May 4, and Michigan on May 9 - 10. For info go to www.folktours.com and also see the calendar below.

YASMIN'S NEWS: Yasmin has 4 super music CDs out (see CD section above)... She has quite a few DVDs out too (three she made with me): "Artemis Dances!" which is all performances and interviews with me, "Lifting the Veil of Time" which is a performance and documentary film featuring many dancers and many specialties and "Night at the Casablanca" (which, alas, is no longer available). There are two other DVDS which she made for other people: one is a remix of a performances featuring Leila of Cairo entitled "Bint Al Belad with Leila" and a fitness DVD with Gerson Kuhr entitled "Core Training for Belly Dancers." For more information and updates keep checking e2ma.net/go/1022467832...rpentine.org/.

          From DOLPHINA (CA):

          Greetings! April 2008
          www.goddesslife.com

I am delighted to welcome you to the GoddessLife monthly newsletter. You are about to enter a realm where the ordinary becomes extraordinary and the mundane becomes magic.

For many years now, I have taught classes and workshops to women from all walks of life at The Goddess Center. It is here that women connect with each other and they learn the fundamentals of the GoddessLife lifestyle. I have watched women evolve and transform into the most amazing beings, able to overcome any challenge and create a meaningful life. Now, through this newsletter, I want to open up the essentials of this lifestyle to ALL, so you can participate wherever you live. I will do this two ways:

First, through my monthly GoddessLife 101 column I will share with you my secrets to living the GoddessLife. You will also find sections on everything Goddess, including goddess events, movies, books, music and Goddesses (past & present) that have inspired me and helped me in my own transformation.

And second, it is through the newsletter that you can connect with the larger GoddessLife community. This newsletter is about YOU. I want you to feel that this is your tribe. This newsletter is about your transformation and owning your power as a woman...your GoddessLife! Please share your stories, your ideas, and your feedback. Tell me your favorite books, movies, upcoming events and why so that I can start to post them.

No matter what your current circumstances are - your GoddessLife can begin right now! So, kick your shoes off and join me on a path of empowerment, self-worth, magic and fun!

          Blessings,

          What's New at GoddessLife

There is so much new going on at GoddessLife that I could fill up this entire newsletter with this section! Fortunately, you can peruse at your leisure my brand new website which features everything GoddessLife in one destination. On the homepage, you can watch never-before-seen videos I created just for the website, or check out the brand new Goddess Workout DVDs and music downloads. Find out where you can attend upcoming workshops & retreats, or find a certified Goddess Workout instructor in your area. Read about the colorful history of bellydance, the allure of burlesque or etiquette for swimming with dolphins. Make sure to visit GoddessLife.com often, as there are many exciting things happening all the time!

          GoddessLife 101

Join me each month in this section as I teach you simple tips to living a fuller, healthier and fun life. You are a goddess and it is time to start living that way!

Lesson #1: Empower yourself by learning about other powerful women. They can help you discover your own unique Goddess within.

You can do this by finding photographs of women you admire for their success, beauty, courage, talent or outlook on life. You can find them in magazines, online or from your own personal photo album. Make it a fun project. Light some candles, put on some of your favorite music, and look through your house for photos of women who inspire you. You can even make a collage! Post them in place where you will see them everyday, such as your bathroom mirror or on your refrigerator door. Let their images encourage and motivate you until you discover that the qualities you admire in these women are within yourself! (Read the Legendary Goddess of the Month - Amelia Earhart - she did this while she was hospitalized for a month with the Spanish Flu!)

          Inspirational Goddess of the Month

Your stories of how the Goddess Workout has transformed your life serve as great inspiration to me and now I want to share it with other Goddesses! Nominate a Goddess!

          Name: Dorothy Lowry

          Location: Kuwait City, Kuwait

Story: I work at the US Embassy in Kuwait and started a bellydance club in which we do The Goddess Workout together each week. The women in our club range from stick-thin to gorgeously fluffy, and when we're shaking our shimmy you'd better watch out! Most of the local women were brought up with Bellydance, but love Dolphina's girl-power attitude. Our club took a field trip to the open-air souk and got coin scarves. I was planning on a Persian carpet for my Kuwait souvenir, but this is so much better.

Favorite Goddess Workout Dance Move: the shimmy - it even SOUNDS good!

Favorite Indulgence: a good spa pedicure

Dream Job: I'm living it - I am a nurse

          Legendary Goddess of the Month

Each month I will feature a woman who embodies the highest possible expression of her nature. Honoring the brilliance in other women will help all of us on our path to living our own true potential.

          Amelia Earhart
The mysterious circumstances of Amelia Earhart's death hold an endless fascination for me. Even more enthralling is the fact that she became one of the first female aviators and a feminist icon against tremendous odds. Hospitalized as a teen for a year with the Spanish flu, she courageously willed herself to survive by keeping a scrapbook of successful females working in male-dominated careers. (she did the GoddessLife 101 exercise of the month!) She paved a way for the independent woman when she married into the wealthy publishing family, the Putnams, and kept her own last name. She broke so much new ground for the modern woman and showed us we can do any thing we put our minds to. Who inspires you? Let me know!

          Goddess Movie of the Month

From Gidget to Gilda - from Film Noir to Romantic Comedy - the heroines of these girl-power flicks have the Goddess attitude in spades. Each month I will feature one of my favorites. Email me your favorites.

          Ball of Fire (1941)
With the simple fact that the leading lady's name is "Sugarpuss O'Shea", this movie became one of my favorites. Barbara Stanwyck plays a sharp-tongued showgirl who charms and devastates everyone around her with her unbelievably witty dialog and the most dazzling dress ever to appear on the silver screen! Loosely based on Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs, Sugarpuss is a gangster's moll "on the lamb" who moves in with 8 nerdy professors that are writing an encyclopedia. Written by the incomparable Billy Wilder and directed by Howard Hawks. Sugarpuss's moxy will inspire you to be strong enough to embrace your softness in style.

          Goddess Book of the Month

From Biographies to Self-Help - the wisdom found on these pages will help guide you on your GoddessLife journey. Each month I will feature one of my favorites.

          Flapper
I could not put down "Flapper" by Joshua Zeitz. Flappers were more than just dancers; they were the women who made America modern. They defined the first sexual revolution, the right for women to pursue happiness and were the first-wave femininists. Flappers broke all the rules of the previous Victorian era and held the entire country frightened and fascinated. I devoured the decadent and deliciously wicked stories of these women who are without question the cat's pajamas!

          Goddess Music/playlist

From Billie Holiday to Bellydance this music will inspire you to dance like no one is watching.

          Cardio Bellydance - Intro Remix
This month I am featuring the soundtrack to my latest DVD - Cardio Bellydance. It is an electronica remix of the classic Intro to Bellydance CD mixed by Michael Cox of Petrol Bomb Samosa. Dubai after Hours is perfect when you are in the mood to be sensual and Electro Exotica is ideal for when you want to shake it like Shakira!

          Goddess Event of the Month

Goddesses know how to celebrate! Connect with other Goddesses in person. These are events not to be missed... see you there!

          V to the Tenth
V-day is turning 10 this year! Eve Ensler, author of the Vagina Monologues and creator of V-day to end violence against women, is celebrating this anniversary in New Orleans with V to the 10th. Reclaiming the Super Dome and transforming it into SuperLove, she asks us to join the 2-day mega celebration and "Change the Story of Women". Saturday night will open her new play, "Swimming Upstream" featuring Katrina survivor stories with an unbelievable cast that includes Oprah Winfrey, Selma Hayek, Jane Fonda, Eve and many others. From BELLYTWINS (CA):

              April 2008

Our recent trip to Dubai inspired us to dedicate this month's newsletter to the music, dance, and culture of that part of the Middle East. Located in the heart of the Gulf, this metropolitan city is one of our favorite places to perform and visit, not because of the great shopping and nightclubs, but because of the harmonious living amongst various cultures. With almost 50% population of Indo-Pakistanis, the rest Arabs, Persians, some westerners and Asians, we felt right at home with the people. There aren't that many places where we can speak Arabic, Hindu/Urdu and English!

Unlike some of Middle Eastern countries, Dubai is not only tolerant or accepting of the arts, but encourages it. Now, this doesn't mean you can hold up a sign there announcing you're a belly or bollywood dancer. It is primarily conservative Muslim people. But many locals in Dubai we spoke with do enjoy Bollywood films and music. Hollywood films are also very popular. It's no wonder that the city holds its annual film festival which draws Bollywood and Hollywood film stars there. Dubai also has an active music scene, as proven with its 24 hour "MTV style" Arabic music channels. Middle Eastern musicians such as Diana Haddad, Tarkan, Nancy Ajram, and Amr Diab (who we just performed with) hold big concerts in Dubai. Westerners musicians including Aerosmith, Santana, Elton John, Celine Dion, and Phil Collins have also performed in the city.

Reviewed by: Diana Rohini La Vigne

Visually pleasing, packed with helpful information and fun to read, The Way of the Belly is a grand exploration into the world of beauty, health, and happiness. This 173-page reader is a treasure cove for those interested in being inspired by two of the nation's leading dancers and sensual gurus, Neena & Veena. As identical twins, they are a force times two in every way. Their styles are similar but offer a slightly different point of view.

The book is one of the best bargains available at only $24.95. Bursting with recipes that make your mouth water, easy to read side bars with tips of the trade and classy visuals that show you what the text explains in detail, it's hard to beat the value. Additionally, The Way of the Belly offers a free instructional Belly Dance DVD with the book! It's obvious the Belly Twins are more interested in educating others about the dance than counting their dollars made by their books' sales. The Way of the Belly and the Belly Twins are a breath of fresh air in the industry of dance and fitness.

I strongly recommend this to brides looking for fun fitness to slim out before their weddings, wives looking to spice up their romantic side, anyone interested in fitness and mostly to those who seek creative ways to health and happiness. These fitness leaders are heading for almost guaranteed global stardom.

              BELLY TRIP TIP

Sitting in one area for hours can be extremely uncomfortable and taxing on the body. So whether you're sitting by a computer at your office, or on a long 18-hr. plane ride (as we were recently to Dubai), take any opportunities to refresh and rejuvenate your body by bellydancing. Try to get up every hour and a half (or less, if you can), and "dance" with a couple of your favorite movements for at least a two minutes. On airplanes when it's safe, go to the most spacious area (usually near the bathrooms). Some of the suggested movements are simple hip circles, figure eights, and shoulder rolls. Any amount of dance movements may prevent backaches, leg cramps, and neck stiffness. Not only is this good for you physically, but also your emotional well-being, so you're ready for anything once you've touched ground.

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              BELLY BIZ

Good news for American dancers and performers! You may be eligible for a larger deduction when filing for federal and state taxes if you've worked for two or more employers during the year as a dancer, receiving at least $200 or more in wages from each employer, your job-related expenses are more than 10% of your income from your performing artist jobs, and you have adjusted gross income of $16,000 or less (without regard to this deduction). If you are a qualified performing artist, and you paid for job-related expenses out of your own pocket, then you can claim those expenses as a tax deduction. If you qualify, claiming the qualified performing artist deduction will provide a bigger tax break. Check with your accountant.

              Type of Deduction:

Travel: gas, airfare, etc. Your deductible expenses are limited to the federal per diem rates for the city you are travelling to
              Beauty: Makeup, Hair, Nails
              Costumes
              Dance shoes/slippers
Therapeutic massages and/or health-related treatments for your body
              Dance classes
              Workout clothes
              CDs
              DVDs

Where to Claim the Deduction: You claim your job-related expenses tax deduction on Form 2106 or Form 2106-EZ. Normally, these expenses are transferred to Schedule A. However, if you qualify, these expenses are transferred to Form 1040 Line 24.

From the IRS: "If you do not meet all of the above requirements, you must deduct your expenses as a miscellaneous itemized deduction subject to the 2% limit." (Miscellaneous Deductions, Publication 529)

Tax Law: The tax deduction for certain job-related expenses is found in Internal Revenue Code Section 62. Qualified Performing Artist: IRC 62(b).

              BELLY MOVES

              Shoulder Shimmies:
This month we are featuring an old-time favorite -shoulder shimmies. This movement is popular not only in Egypt, but in the Gulf, Iran, India, and other surrounding countries.

Let's begin by first putting on some of your favorite music, preferably with an eight count rhythm. If you really want to get into the belly groove, we would recommend the audio cd "Bellydance Core Conditioning" for an Arabic techno-fusion or "The Way of the Belly" or "Essential Bellydance" audio cd for a more "traditional" sound. www.bellytwins.com/sh_cd.htm. For this particular movement, pick something about medium tempo. This exercise allows you to work the upper body, including the deltoids, the pectorals, biceps, triceps, and the trapezius muscles, as well as improve your coordination.

To get a feel of this, let's begin slowly. Start with your arms extended out to the side, keeping the fingers and elbows soft, and chest lifted. Let's begin with the right shoulder. "Punch" your shoulder forward and then back in full range. Do this a few times. Once you get the hang of it, try the left side. If you're like most people, you may notice the left side is alittle more challenging than the right. No worries, if you have to, practice the left side alittle longer than the right. When you feel comfortable for the next phase, try alternating both shoulders at the same speed. Punch each shoulder for each beat. When you've done this for about a minute, try to double the speed. One-and-two-and-three-and-four...right shoulder "punches" on the number, and the left shoulder punches on the "and." Again, we do this for about a minute. Remember, you still want to keep your core nice and tight, even though we're concentrating our workout above the belly. BELLYCISE: Now, let's take the movement you just learned, and put it to fat-burning use. Shimmy-time! High speed -as we "vibrate" the shoulders. One-e-and-a-two-e-and-a-three-e-and-a-four... keep the movement steady. Palms facing the ground, fingers together and soft, chest open.

For coordination, try walking as you shimmy. Step right, left, right, left... each beat, you walk, as you shimmy your shoulders! For the gulf style, step on only the right foot on each beat, while the ball of the left foot (slightly behind the right foot) steps on the "and" count. Happy dancing!

BELLY ARTICLE Dancers - beware of scammers!

These days, times are rough and tough, and people worldwide are financially getting frustrated and desperate, preying upon everyone -senior citizens, kind-hearted humans, and dancers. That's right, dancers. It seems as if Bellytwins receive a minimum of at least one new "scam" artist per week looking for a teacher in the United States, and their daughter, son, beautiful model or prodigy is coming to take private lessons with one of us. Now, at first, it didn't seem that odd because some of my students have come from Canada, Korea, Japan, Mexico, and various other countries to either take classes with us or to take private lessons. But I have found that many dancers (especially bellydancers) are generally a target for overseas scammers. Or they may be looking for you to arrange to hire a DJ, band, making flower arrangements, etc., and give them the works on whatever you can provide, whether you are a talent agent, event planner, or not. What do they do afterwards they've gotten you committed? One of our previous employees unfortunately, was a victum of almost $10,000 a few years ago before he worked for us. They will "wire" you the money, send you a money order or cashiers check, and then suddenly some unforeseen circumstance happens, and they need the money back. It may be fine if the money is real, but in most cases, the checks are fraudulent. Your own bank will even accept the check and "clear" it, but weeks later, you will find out that the funds are "insufficient," and you will never hear from them again. However, 99% of the time, most of us can read between the lines, and intuitively that something doesn't seem right. Here are some signs to look for, in case you get approached by one of these:

Eloquence: How well is the email written? Many emails we've received were from "clients" were trying to sound like as if English was their first language. However, this may not always determine whether they are for real or not, because many of our students or customers speak English as a second language. But these days, you can download an English translation, so their email ends up sounding alittle too "perfect."
If they come from an organization, do they have a website?
Is there a contact number, address, etc.
Vagueness: This is a biggy. If they don't know what type of dance they want, chances are they don't care. They just need a way to get your money.
Does it make sense they are contacting you?
Now, I'm not saying to lose faith in mankind, as some may really need your services....just listen to your intuitive belly.

Some tips on intuition can be found in chapter 3 of "listening to the belly" of the book, "The Way of the Belly."

              BELLY MUSIC AND DANCE

Raks Al Nasha'ar (pronounced "rocks all nuh SHAH ar") or also called Khaleeji. It is the style of music native to the Arab Gulf states (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.) In fact, in Arabic, khaleeji means "of the gulf." It is characterized by heavy use of the traditional tabl drum and music of the oud. In the Khaleeji dance, it is known for the women tossing and swinging their hair in a circular motion, side to side, and forward and back. Traditionally a women's social dance, they dress in widely cut "thobes" (long robes) that are made of transparent colorful silks embroidered with gold threads and sequins. The wide sleeves can be pulled over the head with which the women play coquettishly with each other. The roots of these dance movements may stem from trance rituals similar to the Zar found in North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and deserts in India.

BAHEBEK WAHESHTINI - (I Love You, I Miss you)

I Love You, I Miss You
I love you, I miss you
I love you and you are the light of my eye
I feel this when you look into my eyes
              I love you to death
How many times have I searched and searched?

I have not found a home except in your embrace

And when I was away from you time stopped
And if you could have been with me I moved away and you did not
In the blood of my beloved and my mother
Don't let me be how I am
              I moved away form you
What was I going to do?
              Who chooses his own estrangement?
But this love of yours we couldn't forget and I live in it
Why am I sorry for the abscence?
You were not abscent for a moment
No one is as kind and nice as this
