There was a thread on this recently on The Indigo tribe....

If you look about 5 posts down, there's a post from Alicia which includes an article from Heather Stants of Urban Tribal Dance Company, with her take on a tribal fusion definition.

Hope this helps!

Good question, as I understand tribal fusion is all sorts of tribal that is not ATS. But some people use it specifically to describe the style The Indigo does. Tribaret is more for cabaret-tribal fusion.

Salutations dahlin

To be "tribal" (according to the webster dictionary) means: to pertain to tribe in one or more aspects... whether it's costuming, music, cues, etc. as long as it links in some way, it can be tagged "tribal".

A tribal fusion dancer takes some element of tribal and fuses it with an outside element. I'll use Tri-baret as an example. It can be Cabaret costuming and music... with tribal cues. Or it could be Tribal costuming... and Cabaret music. ya'mean?

The trick is fusing them appropriately so that the fusion doesn't seem out-of-place or silly. I think tribal costuming with modern mid-east music looks a little confusing (but that's mearly a personal opinion)... However "tribal-fusion costuming" (with a touch of past and future) can look good with modern mid-e tunes... (in my opinion the visual should fit the audio in some way).

I don't own the tribal bible, so I'm sure others may have a different definition than me. Some say you can only be tribal if there is more than one of you. I disagree, and so does the english language. To be a "tribe", there must be more than one of you. To be tribal, you mearly need to have aspects pertaining to...

It's not surprising that you are unsure about what tribal fusion is. It's really a big bucket of open possiblities.

Or, better yet, what do you understand when you hear the words "Tribal fusion", referring to a dancer, performance...?

I mean, after all I have read about this, I'm still confused about what is tribal fusion.
I understand "fusion" as taking 2 different things and putting them together, and the mix is something absolutely different of what the things were at the beginning.
But I don't understand what are fusioning tribal dancers. I see the belly dance, yes, but apart from the gothic clothes and jewelery, were is/ are the other/s element/s of the fusion?
