Director's Note
Happy Fall dear Saffron friends! Since our last communiqué, the trees have been spiced with the rich gold, orange and purples of a perfect Saffron Season. It's been an incredibly exciting time with lots to share. This weekend, Faten Salama, Nourhan Sharif and Saphira team up again for another BEST OF THE BEST Belly Dance Intensive – perfect for the new dancer! We have a few spots left and it is not too late to REGISTER.
Save the Date for Saturday, December 12 for Spice of Life, Saffron's Winter Dance Concert presented at the beautiful Gonda Theatre in the Davis Center of Performing Arts at Georgetown University. Tickets will be available shortly.
As you can see, it's shaping up to be a vibrant, colorful season and we promise to keep things lively and interesting here at Saffron –No time to rest – must keep shimmying!

Lost Symbols @ The Wind Up Space (Baltimore, MD)
"One People, One Planet, Hon! Hidden Meanings of Common Symbols"
www.21stcenturyradio.com/
Dr. Robert R. Hieronimus will present a slide show and demonstration on the Hidden Meanings of Common Symbols in conjunction with a performance by TELESMA at The Windup Space on 12 W. North Ave. in Baltimore on Saturday, November 14, 2009.
Decoding the reverse of America’s Great Seal as a symbol for the God within and the connection to higher consciousness has been the life work of Hieronimus. (He first contacted the State Department about that mysterious eye and pyramid on the one dollar bill in 1968!) Thanks to the best-selling ability of Dan Brown, tens of millions of readers are now being introduced to Hieronimus’s work in the form of Brown's new novel, The Lost Symbol. On November 14th, Baltimore music fans and art lovers will hear a personal explanation of how our nation’s most common symbols ultimately point to the same thing: unity, balance, and attaining a state of higher consciousness. Learn how to decipher symbols for yourself. Next door in the large warehouse space there is also the opportunity for attendees to paint their own symbolic artwork.
After his presentation, Dr. Hieronimus and assistants will create symbolic mural to the transformative music of TELESMA
Selections of Hieronimus’s 40 years of symbolic art will be on display at The Windup Space from November 1 through December 31, 2009. Also on display will be selections from the rock and roll celebrity photographs of Stuart Zolotorow. From Brooks Robinson to Paul McCartney, John Lennon and Willie Nelson, Zolotorow has photographed and published some of the legends of popular music and sports. Cultural heroes and mythology are essential to the health of stable society, and Zolotorow’s photos of our contemporary heroes remind us all to aim for the stars and that our purpose in life is to change the world.
Afterward, Knowledge (Soul Mob Productions DJ) will bless the decks till 2am.

Flawless Floorwork
with Ruby
This DVD is designed as a practical guide to help you perform seamless floorwork. We'll begin with a comprehensive pilates based strengthening routine which will help you build and maintain the muscle control required for safe and beautiful floorwork. The strengthening routine takes you through the full range of muscles used in floorwork and guides you in proper alignment for longevity in joints and muscles.
We'll explore a variety of methods of descending to and ascending from the floor, for flawless and floating level changes.
The combinations are designed to help you sequence the movements together. There is also a live performance that will showcase a floorwork improvisation, with techniques developed on this DVD as well as universal floorwork stylization.

Combination Nation Vol 2
Featuring:
Aradia - DaVid - Kristina Canizares - Magidah - Maria - Oreet - Sa'diyya - Sandra - Zari
This instructional DVD features dancers from all over the United States. Each instructor shares her favorite, signature-style steps and combinations.
Each combination is broken down facing a mirror, as it would be in an actual workshop or dance class. We then drill each sequence to music for several minutes to allow you plenty of time to pick it up. This DVD is extensively chaptered so that you can skip the explanations and continue on directly to the drills once you are familiar with the breakdowns.
Each combination has it's own flavor, which is designed to increase your movement vocabulary and to expand your dance horizons!

From SAHARA DANCE (DC/MD/VA):
Hi everyone!
October has been a good, full month. Thanks for making a lively hafla! It was a fun one, complete with happy, henna-adorned dancers and a beautiful performance by The Calmes Triplets. Photos are now up!
Preparations for Raqs Caravan Showcase are underway. We're excited to feature a holiday-hula piece, salsa-belly dance fusion, 10 new solo works and a Sha'bi piece. Raqs Caravan East and Sahara Tabla will be performing together for the first time, which has made for interesting and fun Tuesday rehearsals.
Their composition keeps getting longer and more intricate, but the drummers and dancers are working well together and the piece is evolving organically with contributions from all sides. I 'm grateful for their patience, creativity and good work ethic--it's going to be a great piece.
We're happy to announce the dates for our 8th Annual "Under a Desert Moon" Gala and our 5th Annual Belly Dance Yoga Retreat with Rachel Brice at the beautiful Pura Vida spa in Costa Rica.

International Belly Dance Congress and Fifi Abdou
Photo: Sadie & Fifi Abdou at "The International Bellydance Congress" September 2009
I also recently finished another European tour visiting London and Poland for my second time to each place. I was just one in an epic line up of teachers and
performers at "The International Belly Dance Congress" outside London. They were my highest attended workshops yet, with over 100 students in some of them. I met some other amazing artists from around the world such as: Ozgen--total cutie, we even talked about doing a duet sometime ;-), Randa Kamel--WOW! It was my first time seeing her live, her performance was show stopping, and........ FIFI ABDOU. I was looking forward to seeing this legendary dancer perform, as well as attend a workshop with her, but never did I expect to have the DIVA herself give me her compliments after my performance. Immediately after my dance, a friend of hers escorted me to her table where I was able to pay homage to the Queen, and humbly accept her approval. I gave her a few DVDs with my performances to take with her. It will forever be a cherished
memory of my dance career.
Check out the Congress site for more info and pictures of this exciting event, www.bellydancecongress.com.
Middle Eastern Music and Dance Camp
Photo: Sadie dancing with Rachid Halihal and others at camp August 2009
Back in August, I taught and performed at "Middle Eastern Music and Dance Camp" in the Mendocino Woodlands, where I had the awe inspiring experience of soaking in and dancing to live Middle Eastern music every night for a full week. I have said it before, and I will say it again, if you have not been to camp, you must! It is one of the most inspirational and insightful events for dancers, it will change you!

I'd also like extend a big "Thank You" to all of my dedicated sponsors and, of course, to all the beautiful dancers I have met in every nook of the planet. I have sincerely treasured meeting you all and look forward to seeing you again.
I will be finishing out the year with some R&R and two more exciting events with my "partner in crime"--Kaya. Come check us out in Mexico City, for my 3rd visit, during the first weekend in November and Taipei, Taiwan in December.
My 2010 schedule is nearly fully booked, and my website is now updated with that information, so be sure to check it out. I will be in over 20 cities in 10 different countries in 2010, maybe yours! www.sadiebellydancer.com
Lastly, you can expect to hear from me a bit more often now thanks to the help of my awesome assistant, Mariel. She finally got me up on Facebook and is helping me to slowly snail my way into the 21st century. Many of you have met Mariel at Kaya's and my "Summer Workshop Series" and know what a sweetie she is. I'm happy she will be helping me to stay in touch!
BIG Hugs,

FAQ
Every month, Sadie will answer some of your most "frequently asked questions:"
1. Where are you from originally?
"I was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA and moved to Denver, Colorado, USA when I was 13."
2. What is your nationality/family background?
"Like most Americans, I am a mix of many nationalities. I'm not even 100% certain of my full heritage. What I do know is of my Mom's side of the family.
My Grandmother's family came from Germany 4 generations ago. Over time, I have been able to research much more about my Grandfather's heritage. In the mid 1500's, my Grandfather's father's side of the family came from France to Quebec, Canada.
There is a fascinating history here, and I am still learning of it myself, with my Genealogy linking back to Native American roots. My Grandfather's mother's side of the family has been in the Sheboygan, Wisconsin area for over 6 generations, and were most likely German immigrants. I am excited to learn more, as I know nothing about my Father's heritage.
In looking into my Mothers side, it has felt like reading about characters in a story. Through their story I have fallen in love with many of these distant relatives, such as my Grandpa's Mom, Elvira. She was a total rebel for her time and ended up dying of Tuberculosis at 27. My Grandpa's aunt was a professional dancer and traveled with the Lawrence Welk Orchestra in the 1930's, performing around the country. I learned of many of my grandparents' cousins and uncles who died in WWII at such young ages, between 18-22. It is hard to believe that these people paved the way for me to exist. Sometimes, I look at photos of these people and see myself or my brother, etc. Genealogy is absolutely fascinating!"
3. What is your training regiment for getting your awesome muscle control?
"I can attribute this more to conditioning. Training over a long period of time has created the muscle memory to do what I do. I am always dancing and practicing, so I never lose this skill I have developed.
If you are interested in developing this kind of control, the only way is through hard work and repetition. There are no short cuts! In addition to practice, you can incorporate a workout regimen that increases your stamina, flexibility and strength. This regimen should be tailored to your own goals and abilities. I always recommend a good core workout which includes all muscle groups of your abs, back and glutes, as well as a good leg workout--quads, hamstrings and calf muscles--are essential."

Letter To Suhaila!
Dear Suhaila,
I just wanted to briefly share this story with you -
I received my very beautiful level I certificate in the mail this week. Yesterday, my adult daughters were over to the house and I couldn't wait to show it to them. My oldest daughter looked at me sort of funny and said, "Wow you are really proud of that aren't you mom?" I've never been much on tooting my own horn - so even my excitement over it was odd to my children! I was raised to believe your accomplishments will speak for themselves and talking about them is only being crass and egotistical. So - it's hard for me to yak it up about things I'm proud of. Sometimes this is good, and sometimes it is less than healthy - I'm working on figuring that out.
Then I had an epiphany: I am more proud of this accomplishment than any other in the 20+ years I've been bellydancing. I've won a decent showing as a soloist in competitions and my troupe has also done really well in recent years..... but this? I am damn proud of this!
There are many in the widespread Pac NW bellydance community who still don't GET it - "How can you certify bellydance?" "It's a racket to make money." and the ever present, "Why do you want to dance like Suhaila?" It continues to amaze me that there is sometimes such resistance to accepting that what you have created is legitimate, much less that it is producing the most amazing dancers I've seen in two decades of being a fanatic about this art! I've taken to simply saying, "Yep, I drank the Koolaid. In fact, I drank the Koolaid and I want MORE."
Thank you seems too simple - as I continue down the path with my level 2 kit in my sweaty little hands, I am discovering more by each day and I only continue to be amazed and frankly, grateful that you share so freely what you could have kept to yourself and a select few - which is somewhat the style of our dance form. So, I had to say one more thank you.
Until I learn more and grow more and have to say it again. LOL. Have a fabulous day Suhaila. You rock my world daily. :)

Dance Style and Influences
Nuevolution Productions revolutionized the presentation of salsa performances by increasing the complexity of stage craft, choreography, costuming, and story telling.
NP draws from the roots of salsa in African dance, Afro Cuban, and combine these foundational movements with other rhythm based dances such as Ballroom, Capoeira, Afro Jazz, and Hip Hop, thereby increasing the vocabulary of salsa movement and making it more appealing to a younger generation.
NP is the most creative, and innovative salsa group on the East coast, with high performance quality, and because they are the first to have turned salsa into a narrative dance form.

January 2010 Classes
www.amirajamal.com has just been updated!
Boston (begins 1/25): Monday nights: 7PM-8:30PM - Advanced Intermediate and Advanced/Professional Students: We are going back to the basics of a five-part American Cabaret show, with all the fixins! This will include veil, double-veil, drum solos, Karsilima, cane, and much more. We will work with the Top-40 "most likely" American Cabaret songs. On nights that we have dancers signed up for peer-critique on their performances we will run later than 8:30 at no extra charge.
Wellesley (begins 1/12): Tuesday nights: 6:00-7:00PM; Framingham (begins 1/6): Wednesday nights: 7-8. All these classes will be:
Bellyrobics and Beginner Belly Dance. This is a fast-paced class designed to give students a strong fitness workout while introducing you to basic moves. No prior belly dance experience is necessary.
Framingham (begins 1/9): Saturday mornings: 9:30: Advanced Beginner and Intermediate Technique (drills & zills); 10:30: Advanced Beginner and Intermediate: Performance Skills (similar to Boston description but more for "newbies")
Always Available: Private instruction in Framingham
Another Hint from Language of the Dance: Tips, Techniques and Stories (many of the steps mentioned in this article can be seen on the CD-Rom which comes with my book)
FEELING THE MUSIC AND TRUSTING YOURSELF
What does it mean to say that the music flows through you? How does a dancer become able to express emotion? How does a dancer become one with the music? How does a dancer stop thinking about every move?
One does not need to have or understand lyrics to a song to successfully express the emotion of the music. It is possible to feel the emotion of the music itself. Try this exercise: Put on some music that is particularly moving. It is different for each person, but my personal favorites are usually veil numbers, and my most favorite are:
Bir Dimet (Scott Wilson's Efendi recording)
Bir Dimet (John Bilzikjian's Sirocco recording)
Miserlou (John Bilzikjian's Dantz Fever recording)
Mandoubala (John Bilzikjian's Tapestry of the Dance recording)
Sit in a chair, close your eyes, breathe deeply and find your center. Start the music. Do all your dancing seated in the chair. Have the movements come from your heart out through your arms, torso, and head.
How do you feel? Are you satisfied? Do you feel as though you were lost in some other world - far away from everyday life and worries? Are you so wrapped up in the emotion of the music that you are almost moved to tears? If the answers to these questions are yes, then you have experienced the music flowing through you.
What if the answers to those questions are no? Was your mind elsewhere (like on the clothes you need to wash)? Are you generally a person who cannot let go of control to other people and situations outside yourself? Have you just been out of sync all day and nothing is going right?
Let's take these issues one by one:
Was your mind elsewhere?
In order to let the music flow through you, you must be present. This means that while you are dancing, you are dancing. You are not making laundry lists, worrying about how your costume fits, thinking about your hair, makeup, or choice of jewelry, or assessing feedback from the audience that you may or may not be getting.
Are you generally a person who cannot let go of control to other people and situations outside yourself?
Think about the term "give yourself over to the music." How can this possibly happen if you do not let go? You mustn't feel as though you have to control every single move and every single emotion. When you are doing a choreographed number this may be a different story - as the steps, and often the emotion (facial and hand expressions) are also choreographed and prescribed. Still, though, although the choreography provides the structure, your own passion still has to provide the essence. When you are dancing in an improvisational manner, however, you certainly cannot expect to control every aspect of manner and emotion. You must learn to let go and go with the flow!
Have you just been out of sync all day and nothing is going right?
This happens, and is not necessarily an indication that you always have difficulty letting the music flow through you. I, even after almost three decades of dancing professionally, still have this problem once in a while. I know going into a performance that it's just not my day, and unless I stop a catastrophe in its tracks it certainly isn't going to end up as my day either.
Some of my Favorite Quotes
These quotes are from Coach John Wooden. I think many of them can apply to your life, and many can apply to your dance.
Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.
Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.
If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?
It isn't what you do, but how you do it.
It's the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen.
It's what you learn after you know it all that counts. (I love this one - it's why we do drills every week in class!)
Talent is God given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be careful.
Ask Amira: This month's question: NONE! Please submit your questions.
Please submit your questions - about anything to do with belly dancing!
FEELING THE MUSIC AND TRUSTING YOURSELF .....Continued
This is where the lessons of STAGE PRESENCE take over and you function on autopilot. Look up and out, stay lifted, arms up, a proud torso. Be an entertainer, regardless of whether or not you feel like a dancer. You can sparkle. You can act as if you are in sync with all that is going on. TRUST yourself to do what you need to do, don't worry that you won't. If you spend as much time trusting as you do worrying then your show will sparkle and so will you. I have finished shows and have related my experience to people who have watched me. The remark is always "Oh I NEVER would have known that you weren't ... feeling well... enjoying the music... (you fill in the blank)." You must be prepared to do a professional show, regardless of your personal problems of the day.
It may take years of experience to gain this trust in yourself. But don't wait until you have this trust... because then it becomes the chicken or the egg quandry: How can I learn to trust myself if I don't have enough experience, and how do I get experience if I don't trust myself enough to go out there? Let me tell you something that I know from my own personal experience: You can study surgery all you want. But nothing - NOTHING - prepares you for when that scalpel cuts through skin. You must trust yourself that you have been properly taught and that you are ready - although not experienced - to do this.
To help yourself to reach this level of trust you start with learning steps and movements, and practicing them until you are confident in those movements and steps. But that is not enough. You must do the emoting exercise until you understand the concept of letting yourself go and feeling the music.
I cannot stress enough that you MUST make run-on tapes of all the various songs. That means pull all the veil work music from every single recording you own, and make a tape just for veil. Repeat it for the common introduction songs, chiftitelli and taxim sections, drum solos, etc. In addition to being able to feel the essence and pulse of the music you must be familiar with the technicalities of it. You cannot be afraid of what you will get before you even step a foot out on the stage. You must know enough music to trust that either you won't get something that you don't know or at least, you will get something that is similar and familiar to what you do know.
The emoting exercise you do with the veil should be repeated with all the different music, the same way: sitting in a chair. Play Nour El Ein and see how playful you can become with hand gestures and head and eye movements. Play a karsilima or a drum solo and see how fiery or deliberate you become - just with the upper body: arms, head, hands, eyes, torso. Find yourself becoming introspective and soul searching during a chiftitelli or taxim.
You must feel the music, you must know the music, and you must trust yourself to do both.

From SAHARA DANCE (DC/MD/VA):
Hi everyone,
I'm thrilled to announce that we're moving our Sahara Dance Central (Tenleytown) location a beautiful new studio!
Because of your continued support and dedication, Sahara Dance has outgrown our cute little studio on 41st Street. Our new studio will be two blocks south on Wisconsin Avenue, and will be closer to the Tenleytown-AU Metro stop. Though we arent moving far, we are definitely moving up and will have more space!
We've been at the 41st Street location since launching Sahara Dance 2004, and have spent a lot of time together in that cute little pink and turquoise space with the billowy ceiling.
We've danced, drummed, shared, laughed, cried, encouraged and been encouraged, achieved dance goals and set new ones, met new people and formed lifelong friendships in that studio. Though we'll be sad to say goodbye to the space, we cherish our memories and look forward to making new ones in our new home.
I feel tremendously fortunate to be embarking on such an exciting transition as we enter 2010. There are good times ahead for all of us in this new space. With each step we are continuing to elevate belly dance as an art form and creating a joyous and supportive community surrounding the dance. The new studio will allow us to have more comfortable classes, prepare pieces for stage more easily and expand our programming. Thank you!
And, yes, the Spring 2010 schedule will be online this week (filled with brand new programming!).
In the meantime, here's to Sahara Dance 2.0! Stay tuned for invitations to painting parties, grand openings and more!
FAQ
Q: OMG! OMG! Where is the new studio?
A: 4433 Wisconsin Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20016
(It's on the second floor above the computer store)
Q: When will the new studio open?
A: Our Grand Opening will be sometime in Spring 2010. The specific date is still TBD. We're working hard to open as soon as possible, but we're creating our dream studio, and that involves installing new flooring and rooms in the space. We'll keep you updated on our progress in a new blog series here on Hip Talk!
Q: I take classes at Sahara Dance Central. Where will my classes be held?
A: All Spring 2010 classes scheduled at Sahara Dance Central will begin as usual in the current studio on 41st Street. When the new studio is unveiled, we'll tie on our hip scarves and shimmy down the street to finish out the semester in the new studio.
Q: I ride the Metro to class. How do I get to the new studio?
A: The new studio is even closer to the Tenleytown-AU Metro station.
Yours in dance,
Rachel

From DOLPHINA (CA):
November 2009
Greetings
Dear eGoddess community,
I just returned from a luscious retreat that reminded me of just how extraordinary life can be. I have returned from my journey transformed: renewed, inspired, soothed, encouraged, and satisfied...
Before I took this break, I was not feeling like a strong powerful goddess. In the middle of my second move in one year, I was feeling depleted and fragile. A series of events led me to read and examine all my past eGoddess Newsletters, with all the superb suggestions from all of you regarding empowering books, movies, and other goddesses.
And my journey of healing and transformation began...
After reading the very first eGoddess newsletter, I felt like I'd immersed myself in a warm bath of empowerment. I was inspired by the reviews and suggestions; from the book, "Flappers" about the outrageous women of the roaring 20's to the often-recommended and completely fabulous, "Auntie Mame". I was motivated by all the GoddessLife 101 lessons, such as, "How to properly select and open a bottle of champagne" and " How to create an organic garden". And lovely memories washed over me as I read about the Goddess Events of the Month, such as Candy's drum workshop and Step-Up's (my favorite female empowerment non-profit) Tenth Anniversary party.
Then rolled the parade of Inspiring and Legendary Goddesses: Dorothy Lowry, Amelia Earhart, Jessamina, Martha Graham, Lisa Mc Daniel, Gertrude Bell, Martha Burns, Dana Torres, Kim Blish, Coco Chanel, Jennifer Hess, Cleopatra, Barbara Donahue, Mata Hari, Susanne Staal "Rhiannon", Eartha Kitt, Miata, Anna Celestria, Nefertiti, Jamilla Salimpour, Michelle Cole, Gypsy Rose Lee, Sally Rand, Betti Page, Blaze Starr, Lily St.Cyr, Ann Corrio, Lisa "Li La", Michelle Cole, Xiomara Colon Rodriguez, Laurel Brown, Georgia O'Keefe, Marie of France - Countess of Champagne, Emma Warhurst, Oprah, Lori Silverman and First Lady - Michelle Obama.
It was a remarkable journey! eGoddess newsletters have covered diverse themes ranging from the Economy to Ecology - all sparkling with the GoddessLife philosophy. Together, we have traveled the globe - from Kuwait to Hawaii to England to Alaska. We had funny carefree adventures, like dancing on Conan O'Brien and creating SurfGoddess; and then there were profound experiences: when journalists and Goddesslife participants, Euna Lee and Laura Ling were detained in North Korea in March 2009. Our newsletter at that time was dedicated to these goddesses, and we, the Goddesslife community, stood together in outrage and profound horror until they were released and returned home safely.
It was such an illuminating experience to re-read the newsletters! And so I decided to share my transformative journey with you. Here they are: GoddessLife's Greatest eNewsletter Hits. And good news: all the discounts that were offered in previous newsletters for retreats, teacher trainings, and certifications are available again during the month of November. The newsletters are permanently accessible to peruse online.
Bon Voyage My Darlings!
Blessings,

Want to make extra money as a Goddess?
For this month only, I am making it easier, quicker and more affordable to start your own side business and begin making some extra money by teaching The Goddess Workout at your local gym, dance studio or rec center. I receive so many emails inquiring about locating a Goddess Workout instructor in their area and now they can be directed to you.
Throughout this month, you can purchase the certification online and become a licensed Goddess Workout instructor. You will receive both the Teacher Training manual for bellydance and also the Online Videos for burlesque. Both include everything you need to begin teaching, such as "becoming a teacher", "class structure", "how to create routines", "creating 4-6 week classes", example waivers, press releases and how to share The GoddessLife philosophy with your class.
In addition, you will be listed on GoddessLife's website as a certified instructor with your bio and link to your class and contact information. And as a special bonus, I am offering a 1-hour phone consultation with me to answer all your questions and give you ideas on how to personalize and maximize your teaching.

GoddessLife 101
Join me each month in this section as I teach you simple tips to living a fuller, healthier and fun life. You are a goddess and it is time to start living that way!
Lesson #20: Make your dreams come true and turn your goals into reality.
Dreams, wishes, desires, wants, passions, goals, longings, cravings and yearnings that shimmer on luminescent stardust and beyond. These are all delightful indeed. Some could actually wake you up each morning; inspiring you to go to a job you loathe. You might find yourself daydreaming about your ideas imagining, "If only..." or "when..." There are at bare minimum 1001 excuses of why you can't or shouldn't live your heart's desires, but one truly good one why you should. It's YOUR life.
But what actually is the process of making a dream become reality? Click here to read entire blog in which I break it down into 5 simple steps. And hear the story of how August 2009 Goddess of the Month, Laurel Brown, danced her way to her husband sending her on the GoddessLife trip to Greece in 2010!

Inspirational Goddess of the Month
Your stories of how The Goddess Workout has transformed your life serve as great inspiration to me and now I want to share it with other Goddesses!
Name: Martha Burns
Living: Santa Monica, California
Story:
Dolphina and The Goddess Workout has been an integral part of my photographic book, Bellydance, Celebrating the Sacred Feminine. My journey began 10 years ago when I discovered the empowering qualities of this ancient dance through The Goddess Workout Video. As a photographer, I searched for a bellydance photography book and I never found such a book; eventually I discovered that I would be the one to create it. For many years, I photographed all the legends of bellydance in America with the concept that I would capture the dance as it was performed live. The book lost steam and eventually sat on a shelf while I raised my two dear children. Last year, I began taking classes with Dolphina at The Goddess Center and the book was reborn. I not only realized that the book was needed now more than ever, but I had found the missing piece: The Goddess. I went on Dolphina's retreat to Hawaii and I took photos of Dolphina during a sacred ceremony at an ancient Hawaiian birthing temple. The Goddess officially blessed the book. I realized the power of the Goddess within and when I honor her, anything is possible!
Favorite Goddess Workout move: "The Dolphin" from The Warrior Goddess DVD.
Favorite indulgence: Dressing up like a mermaid, wearing pearls in my hair.
Dream job: Exactly what I am doing.
Order this amazing book.
Legendary Goddess of the Month
Each month I will feature a woman who embodies the highest potential possible expression of her nature. Honoring the brilliance in other women will help all of us on our path to living our own true potential.
First Lady Michelle Obama
We all know Michelle Obama as the First Lady of the United States, but she is so much more, including a First-Rate Green Goddess!
Reared in a blue-collar home on Chicago's South Side, the First Lady began her illustrious education in the Chicago public school system. She proceeded to graduate from Princeton University in 1985 and Harvard Law School in 1988. She is a lawyer and a former Chicago city administrator and community outreach worker. She has worked in the offices of Chicago's mayor and its planning commission, headed a career-training program for young adults and directed community affairs for the University of Chicago and its medical center.
She married Barack in 1992 and they have two daughters, Malia (born 1998) and Natasha (born 2001).
She caught the eye of a national audience at her husband's side after he delivered a high-profile speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004 and then was elected that year to the U.S. Senate. In 2007 she scaled back her own professional work to attend to family and campaign obligations during Obama's run for president. She became First Lady with his inauguration on January 20, 2009.
She was inaugurated as a "Green Goddess" on March 20, 2009 when she planted a 1,100 square foot edible garden on the South Lawn of the White House. Her hope is to educate children about locally grown food, inspiring them to eat healthier and encourage their families and community to follow suit.
The edible garden has over 55 varieties of fruits and vegetables, as chosen by the White House Kitchen Staff. According to assistant head chef, Sam Kass, the cost of the organic seeds and mulch was only $200. They planted tomatoes, tomatillos, cilantro, various lettuces, spinach, swiss chard, collards, kale, arugula, berries, herbs, including anise hyssop and Thai basil. Also in the garden are two hives for honey and a compost pile.
First Lady Obama, along with 23 5th graders from Bancroft Elementary School, began the garden by digging up the soil, then planting and eventually harvesting the vegetables on June 16th. The White House Kitchen Staff plan their meals around the vegetables that are in season. Food grown in the garden has been ingredients for family meals as well as for state dinners and other Official White House events.

Goddess Movie of the Month
From Gidget to Gilda - from Film Noir to Romantic Comedy - the heroines of these girl-power flicks have the Goddess attitude in spades. Each month I will feature one of my favorites. Email me your favorites.
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Sure you may know Audrey Hepburn's classic fashion style (mostly dressed in Givenchy), but you would be surprised at how few people have seen the iconic Goddess Movie of the Month, Breakfast at Tiffany's. Directed by Blake Edwards, some people complain that it veered too far from Truman Capotes' book. I personally find them both perfection and not to be compared. Audrey plays a flawless "Holly Golightly". The party scene is priceless and the memorable dialog in it alone makes the movie worthwhile to watch. Holly is at times the life of the party, filled with joie de vivre, saying, "I personally think its tacky to wear diamonds before I am 40". Other times she is sad and lonely saying, "...the blues are because you are getting fat or because it's been raining too long. You're just sad, that's all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you're afraid and you don't know what you are afraid of". This paradox shows the many facets of us as Goddesses and just how powerful we are capable of being. We can achieve all our dreams and she shows us by having breakfast at Tiffanys.
Order Breakfast Tiffany's DVD
Goddess Book
From Biographies to Self-Help - the wisdom found on these pages will help guide you on your GoddessLife journey. Each month I will feature one of my favorites.
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
I couldn't put this book down. I read it in my bath, my bed, at the doctor's office and coffee shops. It's been said that The Red Tent by Anita Diamant is what the Bible might have been had it been written by God's daughters, instead of her sons. It is told in the voice of Jacob's daughter Dinah who only received a glimpse of recognition in the Book of Genesis. The author skillfully interweaves well-researched biblical tales with events and characters of her own invention. The red tent is the place where women gathered during their cycles of birthing and menses. Dinah becomes a midwife and she shares with the readers women's mysteries, sensual birthing miracles and emotionally charged stories of her four mothers. Reading these women's earthy stories made me value my own cycle and wish that I had a red tent to go to each month.

Goddess Music
From Billie Holiday to Bellydance this music will inspire you to dance like no one is watching.
The Ultimate Goddess Center Playlist
To ease the pain of moving, I listened to the songs that we danced to in classes at the GoddessCenter. Before there was itunes, my students would make CDs for each routine we learned in each class, dating back to 2003! I decided to make a playlist of all the music we ever danced to in our class routines and what I created was THE ULTIMATE GODDESS CENTER PLAYLIST. It was so long, it took 7 CDs to fit all the music. Most of the music is not on itunes, so these are the highlights - nearly 50 songs - of the music from bellydance, burlesque, lapdance, bollywood, brazilian, hula, cheerleading, surf and drumming classes for the glorious 6 years at The Goddess Center.
Download Playlist from itunes
Goddess Events
Goddesses empower themselves with the knowledge and skills they need to create the lives they want. I'm expanding this section to include not just live events and celebrations, but also workshops, seminars and programs that will support you in your ongoing growth and fulfillment. These are not to be missed - see you there!
I want to make your dreams come true and have you attend these life-changing retreats. So I am offering a special discount for the month of November only and an easy payment plan.

It's been a great year. I have enjoyed all of the people and places that have welcomed me.
Special thanks to my troupe, teachers and office assistants who have kept everything going while I've been gone.

We hope to see you in person or on-line at the Holiday Sale. And...look for the new FLOORWORK DVD to be out soon. We are quite excited to bring it to you.

New Year's Eve should be a blast. We always enjoy working with DJ Amar, and this year will be joined by our friends from down south, She'enedra.

The other day a friend said to me, "The definition of a rich man is one who is content with what he has." By that definition, I am a wealthy woman. Thank you all for your support and generosity. I wish you all a happy holiday season.
