From ASHARAH (VA):

Greetings dancers! Just a friendly reminder about three workshops this April at Saffron Dance in Arlington, Virginia, that will enhance your dance, polish you performance, and challenge your brain and body.

Saturday, April 11, 2009 - Tempest (www.darklydramatic.com) comes to Arlington, Virginia, to share two workshops aimed at the performing dancer: "Journey to the Underworld" and "Strange Presence."

Time: 1:00pm - 5:30pm
Location: Saffron Dance Studio
Street: 3260 Wilson Blvd
City/Town: Arlington, VA

Journey to the Underworld – When’s the last time you broke down your own facades and explored the truth of what lays bare underneath? Are you brave enough to look and become stronger as a dancer for it? Being a part of the bellydance community for any length of time affects us in so many ways, many below the surface that can influence how we look and feel about ourselves and others. In this dynamic and unusual workshop, we will explore through exercises and movement combinations the mythic concept of the Descent and Encounter in Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Indian cultures. This is a safe and supportive opportunity to challenge yourself mentally and physically, while discovering who you are or wish to be as a dancer. Warning: This is not a “woo-woo” or “new-agey” class, but it will ask you to push your boundaries.

Strange Presence – It’s all about bleeding your soul out to audience, serving it to them on a platter, and then eating THEM for lunch instead. A truly successful performance does more than show how well you can do the moves—it should really speak to your audience and exude expression. You CAN learn how to have a stronger personality on stage and channel that energy for a more dynamic performance. Discover the key aspects of capturing your audience with your stage presence and develop your own onstage drama! We’ll particularly focus on improvisational technique, character development, and learning to be more “in the moment.” This class is especially for any dancer who is ready to perform or is considering it.

Workshops will be followed by a ritual dance dedication to friend, dancer, and artist Kaihea at the Palace of Wonders. A portion of the proceeds from the workshops will benefit Kaihea's partner and cats.

Register today at MeaHuna Productions: meahunaproductions.com/

-------------------

Sunday, April 19 - Asharah will teach a three-hour intensive on mastering finger cymbals, also known as zills or sagat. NO previous cymbal experience required!

Time: 2:00pm - 5:00pm
Location: Saffron Dance Studio
Street: 3260 Wilson Blvd
City/Town: Arlington, VA

Finger cymbals are an integral part of American Tribal Style bellydance, and can be a lovely accompaniment to a traditional or fusion solo performance. However, many dancers often feel daunted by cymbal playing and have been using them less and less… Finger cymbals aren’t scary, and this workshop will help you approach cymbals as an instrument and as a way to enhance your performance. With the right exercises, anyone can play cymbals and dance! Asharah will lead you through an intense warm up, teach drills that layer movements and cymbal playing, introduce common cymbal patterns found in Middle Eastern music, and teach a short dance combination focusing on the playing of your cymbals with the music and your movements.

Registration coming soon to www.saffrondance.com

COSTUME COLLETION

Opulent Lilac Costume
While I was shopping in Istanbul Turkey 2008 I went to Nahal’s shop. This is one of three costumes I ordered from her. When I came back home from this exotic whirlwind shopping and dance trip- I decided I needed to save this costume for something special. I put the costume in a box and pulled it out to use for my “Opulent Motions DVD”.

    From DOLPHINA (CA):

    Greetings! April 2009

    Dear eGoddess community,

How on earth does a goddess keep a positive attitude when all day long and everywhere she goes she hears about the dreary economy? Hearing repeatedly that times are hare and luxury items have now become faded memories can test the mind-set of even the most fabulous woman. Just how does a goddess live in a world in which everyone is using hideous words like scaling-back and cost-cutting measures? Even the sexy word, stimulus, has lost its luster.

It is a challenge, but don't bury your head in the sand or live in a make-believe world in order to survive this downturn in the economy. We must face cutbacks like only a goddess would. A goddess knows she can do anything she puts her mind to with her implicit joie de vivre. She never gives up and takes charge of her life, adding her own personal touch.

I am dedicating this newsletter to your GoddessLife and the economy. I am going to show you ways of making more income, improve your outlook about the economy, give you tools I have learned from my financial guru, how to get free stuff and how to let go of anxiety and stimulate your attitude.

Btw: the GoddessLife hundred dollar bill above was created by Celestria and is accepted wherever GoddessLife products are sold:)

    Blessings,

    Inspirational Goddess of the Month

Your stories of how the Goddess Workout has transformed your life serve as great inspiration to me and now I want to share it with other Goddesses! Nominate a Goddess!

    Name: Michelle Cole

Story: Michelle wrote an inspiring article about her Goddess Workout journey for Examiner.com To read her story in its entirety, Click here .

About 6 years ago, I decided that if I were to ever win my battle with weight, I'd need to find something that was exercise and fun. Belly Dance naturally came to mind, and the search began for some video's I could use at home. My search ultimately lead me to Dolphina, a wonderfully Goddess oriented instructor/dancer who has video's available. I love how she explains Belly Dance as a dance for women by women, as a celebration of the Goddess. It's also about enjoying your body right now, as it is. The first time I 'tried it on for size', I fell in love with her, especially when she ended the cool-down with these words: "Remember, when you awaken the power of the Goddess Within, magical things will happen! Peace."

Long story short, as much as I enjoyed it, I allowed life to continue to get in my way, and while I used her video's off and on, I never saw any significant changes in my body. Then I started my Journey. I decided if I was going to defeat the loathing I held for my own body, I had to do two things. I needed to learn to love it right now, regardless of it's shape and size-and I had to find things that I enjoyed that got it moving.

So, I changed my perspective and decided to simply learn how to Belly Dance. I wasn't exercising anymore, I was learning, and it has made all the difference in the world. You must MAKE the time to do it, and enjoy it for what it is: Time for YOU.

In time, I started to realize my favorite part of Belly Dancing was that I was beginning to feel the muscles that were making the movements possible. I wasn't aware of my fat, I was aware of my muscle. That was a huge step into being able to love my body right now. For the FIRST time in my LIFE, I can look in a mirror and not say "I hate what I see!"

I'm still in the early stages of this journey, but I believe Dolphina and her connectedness to her own Inner Goddess helped me connect with my own. Which has finally started to reverse the downward spiral my weight had taken when I was only in my early 20's.

Favorite Move: Hard to choose one, but it would have to be the figure 8's

    Favorite Indulgence: Bubblebaths

    Legendary Goddess of the Month

    Miata Edoga
She's like Suze Orman for artists. Before I met Miata, how much I made and how much I spent was a great mystery to me and I preferred it that way. Now she has become my financial guru.

Miata Edoga is the President and Founder of Abundance Bound, Inc., a company created to provide financial education to artists, entrepreneurs and other small business owners.

After graduating from college and training at an acting conservatory in London, Miata moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career as an actor. She experienced bits of success here and there - a few small roles in films and tiny parts on television - but it just wasn't enough consistent work to pay the bills. In an effort to survive, Miata soon found herself working multiple different part time jobs, struggling every month to make ends meet.

As her financial situation grew steadily worse and credit card bills climbed steadily upwards, Miata recognized that she was going into auditions desperate to get the job - NOT for the love of the work , but for the paycheck. Certain that this energy affected her performances and kept her from booking roles, Miata committed to developing strong financial knowledge and to actually applying those skills in her own life.

For six years, Miata demonstrated an unswerving dedication to the learning that would completely alter her financial path. She has built successful side businesses and is now invested in real estate and a large variety other opportunities. She has learned to create passive income, giving her more time to focus on her acting career; and, with her husband, has started a production company that is currently working on a variety of film and television projects.

After seeing the powerful difference that financial education made in her own life, Miata became extremely passionate about sharing this knowledge with others who, like her, needed the skills and tools to purposefully build towards financial freedom. She has a vision of communities of artists and other entrepreneurs - all financially secure and confident - pursuing their passion free from the crushing weight of financial stress. Miata created The Prosperity System, which provides clients with a specific, step-by-step process to eliminate debt and make and keep more money, giving them time, energy and freedom to focus on doing what they love most.

I believe that everything she has taught me is part of living the GoddessLife and she is most definitely a Goddess!

    Goddess Book of the Month

From Biographies to Self-Help - the wisdom found on these pages will help guide you on your GoddessLife journey. Each month I will feature one of my favorites.

What was I Thinking? 58 Bad Boyfriend Stories edited by Barbar Davilman and Liz Dubelman
Forget the bad economy - nothing is worse than these 58 bad boyfriends! Ranging from hilarious to pathetic, they all describe when logic, common sense, and simple self-respect triumph over the human need to be loved - or at least the need to be in a particular relationship. Several dozen of America's most talented writers contributed to this book including Cindy Chupack ( a writer on Sex and the City), Francesca Lia Block, Amy Wruble and Carrie Fisher. It is wickedly delicious. In one of Amy Wruble's essays entitled Junk in the Trunk, she overhears her date speaking derogatorily about her derriere. Amy defends her behind, "My ass is one the least objectionable parts of my body. It's round, it's firm, it has pizzazz. And ever since J.Lo and Beyonce embraced their bootyliciousness, it's even trendy. If my ass had a name it would be Lola." I read the book while traveling and had some thoroughly riotous conversations when women saw the title of the book.

I found it inspiring because we all have had bad boyfriends, but when you hear another woman talking about dating one of these losers, you want to tell her she deserves better and we all do!

    Goddess Music/playlist

From Billie Holiday to Bellydance this music will inspire you to dance like no one is watching.

    The Ultimate Goddess Center Playlist

I received so many emails about last month's playlist, I decided to put it on repeat and play it again this month.

I decided to make a playlist of all the music we ever danced to in our class routines and what I created was THE ULTIMATE GODDESS CENTER PLAYLIST. It was so long, it took 7 CDs to fit all the music. Most of the the music is not on itunes, so these are the highlights - nearly 50 songs - of the music from bellydance, burlesque, lapdance, bollywood, brazilian, hula, cheerleading, surf and drumming classes for the glorious 6 years at The Goddess Center.

    Listen to playlist and download

    Goddess Event of the Month

Goddesses empower themselves with the knowledge and skills they need to create the lives they want. I'm expanding this section to include not just live events and celebrations, but also workshops, seminars and programs that will support you in your ongoing growth and fulfillment. These are not to be missed - see you there!

Prosperity 101 presented by Abundance Bound, Inc.

As women, we start our own businesses (sometimes on the side) for a wide variety of reasons. We want more flexibility to raise our children, or we hate the rigidity of the corporate world. Perhaps we need to create some extra income for our families and have a skill or product that we are passionate about sharing with others. But, often, we pour ourselves into enterprises that flounder because we have no idea what steps we should be taking to structure and protect ourselves financially. As time passes, the businesses we started to make more money and increase our independence slowly (or not so slowly) seem to be draining our energy and our financial resources.

In just 4 short weeks, Prosperity 101 will guide you through the absolutely most critical steps you must take as a small business owner to truly get a handle on your finances. The information is practical, actionable, and extremely affordable. Whether you are just getting started or have been in business for years - you'll get everything you need to create an environment that is conducive to taking control of your money, so you can build your business from a place of genuine financial stability. I am amazed by the confidence I've gained in my own financial life in the months that I've been working with Miata Edoga, the creator of this program, and I am so excited to be sharing this opportunity with each of you!

You can take Miata's class from anywhere. Sign up for an online class!

Sandra launches her new instructional DVD series!

thumbSandra starts off 2009 with the first DVD in her new instructional series "Belly By Sandra" which goes on sale at the end of February. The premiere volume "Isolations" explores key fundamentals of bellydance and is appropriate for both new and experienced students. The DVD is available directly through the raks-sharki.com website. You can also read a detailed third-party review of the DVD on Bhuz.com

      2009 Workshop Schedule is Up!

thumbSandra's workshop schedule for 2009 has been released and will see her visiting studios across the globe throughout the year. Please visit the Workshops page on her website to sign up to these events early! Additional dates will be added as they are finalized, so check back often for new workshops.

      Shooting Schedule for Upcoming DVDs

thumbThe next few months will find Sandra busy in front of the camera. She has just completed filming an advanced instructional DVD with the well-known producer Mher Panossian for his Hollywood Music label in LA at the end of February. This DVD will be set to the music of Yasamina from the Al-Ahram Orchestra and is expected to be released in the summer of 2009. In addition, Sandra will be featured on the next release of the popular "By Dancers, For Dancers" performance DVD recently filmed in March in Berkeley, California. She is also hard at work on a follow-up to her next volume in her "Belly By Sandra" series.

New Audio CD Covers Featuring Sandra
      thumb thumb

Sandra is featured on her 15th audio CD cover with the re-release of "Lebanese Bellydance" by Emad Sayyah on the British ArcMusic label and which has been selected by the well-known vendor Dahlal Internationale as a top 10 pick. She is also the cover model for "A Night at the Harem" which was released in early 2009 by Hollywood Music Center.

      Rakkasah Review

thumbIt's mid-March, and that means it's time for Rakkasah! Sandra brought over 20 of her intermediate students for a group performance featuring costumes designed and crafted by the students themselves. Asked why Rakkasah is so important to her, Sandra said "This isn't really about a performance--it's about spending time together as a team, having fun, and giving students an experience that will help shape their appreciation and understanding of bellydance." Sandra's students performed on Sunday, March 15 at 7:15 pm on the main stage. if you were able to catch their performance, we hope you enjoyed it.

Tip of the Month from Sandra

thumbKeeping your balance and timing while performing a turn can be tricky. To make things smoother and more graceful, start exhaling during your preparation and complete the exhale throughout the turn. This will help strengthen your center by pulling in the diaphragm and improve the speed and control of the turn. Practice this until it becomes second nature—you'll find turning to be a lot easier!

      From HADIA (CAN):

Hello everyone and sending you warm greetings from an absolutely perfect morning on my perfectly beautiful and private beach at Le Méridien Resort in Phuket Thailand!

I am at the end of a blissful week off following a set of very wonderful workshops and teacher training courses in Mexico, Tokyo, Kyoto and Malaysia and getting into gear for Singapore, and my 3rd Annual Magical Bali Retreat, with a full plate of Level 1, 2 and 3 teacher training, as well as a week long dance training program. Registrations are excellent this year and I am so looking forward to it, especially because I will not be holding my Bali Retreat next year.

I will be sending out the highlights of the tour soon, but first some important info about my upcoming plans. First on the agenda is a great weekend workshop and show on May 16/17th followed by Level 3 Teacher Training Certification Course on May 18th to 20th in Chicago (one of my favourite cities). For all details www.pineappledance.org/hadia and registration please contact Erika at mail@pineappledance.org, as I will not be back in North America until May 4th. I am also looking forward to settling into a nice rhythm in my new home and refocusing most of my time on my massage and manual therapy practice. Most of my workshops and training programs will be held in and close to Nova Scotia, until my new apartment in finished in Salvador, Brazil.

I am also sending out a reminder that all DVD submissions and deposits must be sent in by May 3rd, for my 4th Annual Professional Oriental Dance Training Program from July 3rd to 12th (I had requested this delay as I would not be at home to receive these until May). This is also a reminder that DVD submissions are NOT required for the Technique Intensive Weekend (July 3rd to 5th), or the “Making the Most of you Music” workshop (July 11th and 12th), which will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia this year. However, do get your registrations in as soon as possible as space is limited in order to offer you attentive and personalized instruction. In spite of the new location for this fabulous summer training, we will still be blessed with the musical brilliance of Montreal’s most accomplished oriental musicians under the direction of Mr. Fady Akiki! Please note that although a limited number of registrations will be accepted from those students who are not attending the full Training Program, preference will be given to students who are also registered in the Technique Training. The midweek Pro course training will be in Lunenburg, my lovely new/old home town on the sea.
For all details and registration info www.hadia.com/professional.htm

Next, I will hold Teacher Training – Level 1 in Nova Scotia (ideally in Lunenburg) mid to late August, with a Level 2 session planned for October. This is a great opportunity to learn this very valuable and practical guide to safe, effective and simple teaching skills just before the start of the fall season! All details and exact dates will be announced at the end of May. Contact me directly at hadia@hadia.com or 1 902 640-2473 for more information.

Teacher Training – Level 3 – Full Certification Course in Toronto, Ontario is scheduled for the Labour Day weekend at a great new location. The Dover Court Studios (805 Dovercourt Rd.) on Saturday to Monday September 5th to 7th. For registration and details. www.hadia.com/teacher.htm

The next great news is that we have our 8th Annual Turkey – “Gateway to the Orient” Tour coming up from September 15th to 30th. This tour really is the best way to enjoy this marvelous country, its’ music and dance, history, archeological and geographical wonders, as well as its amazingly wonderful people and hospitality (not to mention scrumptious food) with a small group of dance and adventure aficionados and experienced, personalized service by the dynamic duo of Bulent and Hadia. The tour includes Majestic Istanbul with the monuments, shopping in the Grand Bazaar and Bella’s Costume boutique, private classes for our group with Reyhan Tuzsuz for authentic Turkish Roman dance. Then down to Bodrum and a slightly untraditional village to enjoy the Turkish Mediterranean and the rest of your 20 hours of classes in Turkish Roman and Oriental technique and dance with your hostess Hadia. Next, we are off to Afrodisias, Heiropolis and Pamukale hot springs, ending in the Magical Fairy Chimney Wonderland of Cappadocia. For all details of this Unforgettable Journey www.hadia.com/turkey.htm

I will also be stopping in Budapest, Hungary for workshops on my way home. Then my therapy career will be offset with a few other great events this fall; Calgary’s Hip Fest and Level 1 Teacher Training coming up at the end of October; Virginia in November and another spectacular “Perfection in Paradise” week of personalized dance training coming up in Puerto Vallarta (Riviera Nyarit) at the Luxurious and Exclusive Grand Mayan Resort. This will be the end of November or beginning of December, but more news about this after my return to Canada.

      Tribal Yoga Dance

      A workshop With Lauren Burns
      Sunday May 3rd: 5pm-7pm, ($20)
Tribal Yoga Dance, open to all levels, and welcoming to those who are new to Yoga, seeks to blend extractions of ethnic world dance in evolving asanas, moving between stagnation and vinyasa. Synchronizing breath and mudra with movements, Tribal Yoga Dance is a clarifying meditation that brings strength and flexibility to the mind and body. Through a gentle fusion of bellydance isolation technique and yogasanas, the Tribal Yoga Dancer creates dynamic movement patterns that can be done alone or with multiple partners. Infused with the sentiment of contemporary theater, Tribal Yoga Dance utilizes physical acting to express strong, beautiful, and empowering emotions through dance.
Classes begin with a moving body awareness meditation to develop balance. Following the yogic tradition of educating in kranas (waves), each movement builds on the next. Exercises are performed to create a physical understanding of percussive and lyrical movements, followed by precision and focusing drills and techniques..

      4-week session

We all have a dance living in our bodies which does not belong to any one discipline, which is absolutely unique to each of us. In this workshop we will journey deep within ourselves to free it.
We will create a safe, sacred environment in which we are encouraged to feel our vulnerabilities and express our strengths, and will move through guided meditations both in silence and with music. We will go forth into the unknown, giving permission to ourselves to let go of the rulebook and truly be danced.
Whether a beginning-level seeker, a seasoned ecstatic dancer, or anywhere in between, this session will inspire and empower your personal creative process. Hopefully we will all have some fun along the way! Bring a notebook or journal; as time and interest allows, we will share our experiences with one another.

      Middle Eastern Drumming
      classes at Solstice Studio:

Identifying and playing Middle Eastern Rhythms is very important for Bellydancers, whether we are are practicing a fusion form such as ATS, or East Coast Tribal, or if we are practicing folkloric or caberet.

Connecting with the percusive element of our dance helps us to understand and express music of every kind on a much deeper level, plus it honors an ancient root of our dance.

We are proud to have two talented and charismatic doumbek instructors, Casey Bond, and Brad Mack, both very active within the NYC Bellydance community.

      * Thursdays: 9:05-10:15 with Brad Mack
      * Saturdays: 3:15-4:25 with Casey Bond

      4-week session begins April 23rd

In 2005 MECDA voted her their Humanitarian Award for her "body of work" over a lifetime in furthering and enriching Near and Mid-Eastern music and dance & in 2006 the Isis Foundation gave her a Lifetime Achievement Award in Ethnic Dance from the Near and Middle East. Morocco created the Casbah Dance Experience. She's spent over 49 years trying to find, recover, preserve and present them before they disappear, due to modernization and/or fundamentalism

Danny Krivit (DJ) Since the late 70s trade magazines such as Billboard, Record World, & Dance Music Report amongst others, have listed Danny's play lists. Danny's mix tapes get regulare airplay on radio station WBLS, WKTU, & KISS FM. At its inception in 1996, Danny joined Francois K and Joe Claussell to form the Body and Soul team, at club Vinyl in NYC and regularly played every Sunday for its entire run, while also regularly Djing in various clubs in New York & Japan, and everywhere in-between. Recently Body & Soul has enoyed special events in Brazil, France, LA, London, Portugal, Italy, Singapore, and sensational annual events in Japan. "The Disco Files" include Danny Krivit as a legendary key player in the history of NY night life & most definitely one of the very few people who can honestly say he's consistently DJ'd in all the hottest clubs in NY for the past 38 years!

Don Campbell "Campbellock " (Dance Innovator) The creator and originator of Locking or Campbellocking a dance art form with the improvisational steps called the locks, created in the nightclubs of Los Angeles in the early 1970s. This dance and subculture quickly caught on and was soon the rage of Soul Train. Locking survived the 70's and has become one of the most influential styles in street dance history.

Dance Parade is delighted that these incredible performers will represent the spirit of our mission of 'celebrating the diversity of dance' in NYC.

Slow, sultry and sensuous, the taksim segment of the show is where the dancer must express an emotional connection to the intensity and drama of the music. In this workshop, Sarah Skinner will teach movements that highlight the texture and the mood of different soloing instruments. Sarah will demonstrate correct bodylines, and explain how to seamlessly flow from picture perfect poses into fluid and graceful dance combinations.
