The BellyDanceNY.com Events Page is up and running again. I've restarted the Events Page because the whole NY Middle Eastern dance community needs a complete and accurate calendar of events covering all that's happening in and around our dance area, posted all in one place and available for everyone to see.

My hope is that having a reliable and complete listing of Middle Eastern dance related events will inform more people in a more timely fashion than has lately been the case. To this end, please feel free to send me flyers, e-postcards, and other attachments for posting. I'll handle them as before -- with links from the Events Page to the flyer, etc.

Events eligible for posting on BDNY include concerts, parties, show cases, workshops, seminars, festivals, live music performances, etc. I'm not going to post classes except when they are something truly time-limited and novel.

Events must be local -- New York City, Long Island, New York State as far north as Albany, nearby New Jersey and very nearby Connecticut.

As before, this service is completely free--no strings attached, no requests for comps, etc. All I ask is that before you send me a listing you check the Events Page to make sure I haven't already posted it.

Information needed for postings:
Date
Presenter
Type of Event (i.e. concert, seminar, workshop, performance, etc.)
Name of Event
Location of Event
Time Event Starts (and time it finishes, if known)
Cost to Attend Event
Contact Information for Tickets, if any, and for more details.

As ever, please don't load notices up with adjectives and adverbs -- let
your event speak for itself. Save the selling part for your flyer or
newsletter.

IMPORTANT!!
SEND EVENT NOTICES & FLYERS, ETC. TO: bdny.events@gmail.com

That's the ONLY address I'm using for the Events Page.

I look forward to letting people know what you are presenting or sponsoring.

Warm regards,

From SHARIFWEAR (NYC):

Nourhan Sharif is very proud to Present:
Egyptian Born Superstar Mr. Mohamed El Hosseny for the 1st Time in the USA!

5 City Tour! Click on each city for details of the tour!
San Francisco, CA; New York, NY (with Karim Nagi!);
Miami, FL; Kalamazoo, MI & Washington DC!!

Dear Dancer,
2 years ago I met Egyptian Superstar Mohamed El Hosseny as we performed in the same show in Finland and I was simply blown away by his layers of talent/ability to execute it both on a stage and in a classroom... After dancing, performing, & teaching for the last 40 years and working and sponsoring the absolute best Egyptian Dancers in the world it is hard for me to be impressed by anyone! Well it finally happened with Mr. Hosseny!

After 20 years of studying & mastering Sharif technique, and then studying with his esteemed teachers'
Ustez Hassan Affifi & Ustez Mahmoud Reda, I am in a very unique position to have a birds eye view of what the best is and what is available in the market... For years I was fearful of the future of organic Egyptian Dance as there is so much fusion around and confusion abound... so I decided to do something about it ! While fusion is fun it is indeed departure and as Mr. Parra says we need to know what we are departing from! I firmly believe at this point and time Mohamed El Hosseny is at the peak of his career as a performer & eating up the ground he stands on as a teacher/preservationist as we move into the future of Raks Sharqi!

Mohamed El Hosseny like Tito, Karim Nagi, and others I have presented in NYC are the future of our art form!
We must embrace them at every opportunity in order to raise the bar of the dance and get to a higher level of understanding ! What is a Maqam? What are Rhythms? How does one put a choreography together ? How does one use all of these tools? These are all questions we must tackle and I must present artists that can deliver this and more in order to develop artists that can produce at an optimium level!

I present him to the community with a full heart and the best intentions for our beloved art form to go forward with dignity, dedication and passion! The folkloric element from Suez which has never been done in the USA by any other Egyptian EVER is simply infectious as is all of his other work, Reda training, and Ballet experience combined!

The NYC workshops will have 3 main topics Oriental, Folklore, Quality Fusion and we also are delighted by the special class offering with the charismatic and esteemed musician Karim Nagi !

You are welcome to take one or all of them and I personally guarantee you will walk away a better and improved dancer ! For exciting details click here

I hope that you will experience this patient and hard working artist at one of the 5 tour locations and see the joy of dance in this young generation's eyes ! It is never easy to bring Egypt to your door please take full advantage of it without the cost of air ticket and travel to Egypt ! Egypt is coming to you !

Combination Nation is an instructional dvd featuring dancers from all over the United States (and one from Canada). Each instructor shares her favorite, signature-style steps and combinations. Each combination is broken down facing a mirror, as it would be in an actual workshop or dance class. We then drill each sequence to music for several minutes to allow you plenty of time to pick it up.

This DVD is extensively chaptered so that you can skip the explanations and continue on directly to the drills once you are familiar with the breakdowns. Each combination has it's own flavor, which is designed to increase your movement vocabulary and to expand your dance horizons!

This DVD teaches modified ballet techniques tailored to help bellydancers increase balance, fluidity, strength and grace. The program includes precise ballet-inspired exercises to condition the body for efficient and graceful dancing, with additional postures, steps and combinations that can easily be incorporated into any dance routine.

Originally developed in the courts of Louix XIV and refined over centuries, ballet is globally recognized for its beauty and athleticism. As a foundational movement style, cross-training in ballet provides structure and a common vocabulary beneficial to performers of all dance backgrounds.

The DVD contains a warm up, technique demonstration and glossary of ballet terminology, drills and combinations. Each ballet step is explained, broken down and translated into a bellydance context. Drills of the ballet-inspired bellydance technique follow each section for extended practice. Longer combinations showcase the technique elements integrated with other bellydance moves. A bellydance version of ballet's traditional reverence, or curtsy, is also included.

Bellydance: Opulent Motion - The Artistry of Slow Moves
Sarah Skinner :: 160 min.

INFO | PURCHASE | YouTube trailer | Flickr

“Bellydance - Opulent Motion: The Artistry of Slow Moves” explores techniques, styling and expression for dancing to slow bellydance rhythms and rhythmless taqsim. It is open level, but a special section reviewing the foundation movements of bellydance makes it accessible for beginners. Slow dance leaves a lot of room for emotional projection, expressivity and story-telling.
It is also demanding: As you slow down, every nuance of your carriage, technique and styling acquires prominence. Elements of styling, such as arm positions, poses, body angles and hand flourishes become crucial. Pacing must be dynamic and versatile to keep your audience mesmerized.

Celebrated for her lyrical, highly-emotive dance and magnificent improvisational talent, Sarah Skinner teaches you to combine structured and technical dance with organic movement - poses, body angles, and natural expressive motions that emerge when dance is telling a story and borrowing from pantomime. Sarah’s improvisational method relies on story-telling and visualizations that prompt you to find organic gestures and modes of expression that will infuse your dance with meaning.

In the Rhythms & Movements section Sarah analyzes the structure of popular slow bellydance rhythms - ciftetelli, masmoudi, slow maksoum, slow 9/8 rhythm and rhythmless taqsim. She offers combinations that respond to the rhythms in different ways - catching different accents and varying the pace.

In the Movement Sequences section Sarah mixes structured bellydance steps with organic movement including expressive gestures, walks and turns, and offers longer combinations. Sarah breaks down the slow dance sequences step-by-step, and then offers a non-stop practice flow that will help you commit to muscle memory various ways of moving to slow rhythms, explore your own response to the music, and discover ways to maximize your expressivity and the emotional potential of your dance through styling.

In the Musicality and Expression section Sarah performs a number of improvised slow dances and explains how she blends classic bellydance techniques with organic expressive movement. She discusses which types of movement work best with different musical instruments, how to select accents that bring out the interplay between the melody and the rhythm, and ways of reflecting the melodic flow and textures of the music in your dance. Sarah details pacing, setting the mood in slow dance, and relating to your audience. She narrates the stories she enacts in each improvised dance and offers advice on how to turn plain technical dance into a true show, where every step and gesture is meaningful and deeply emotive. This section also includes Sarah’s performances with dance props (candelabrum and swords) where she demonstrates how using a prop transforms the mood and the styling.

TRAVEL

*Expedia is one of the best ways to find a flight to Denver via DIA (Denver International Airport), our main airport. Frontier and United are our city airlines and have many direct affordable flights.

*Denver is a big city so unless you book a hotel very near the studio and shows, you may end up paying more than expected for taxis. The best option is probably a rental car which you can pick up at the airport. Public transit is another option. You can look them up at RTD.

* For hotel or lodging, type in the zip code 80203 into your hotel search to find the hotel availability nearest the dance studio and show location. The studio is located just a few blocks from Downtown Denver.

*If you are interested in sharing a room or rental car with another dancer, please let us know and we will try to put you in contact with other interested dancers.

* Denver is a fun city. Be sure to google search some of the activities you can do while visiting like our museum, mountains, 6 Flags Elitch Gardens, etc. www.denver.org

Greetings from Suhaila

Happy Summer! What a great time of the year this is. Isabella just finished 5th grade and is so looking forward to being a 6th grader. She also had her birthday and is officially a "tween" now being age 11. We are in the middle of touring Europe with wonderful stops in Italy, Spain, Belgium, and France. I'm happy to announce that we accomplished our first certification in Europe with Olivia in Milan at her own studio. You did a great job Olivia! Thank you for your continued support and personal growth in my program as well as trying to share it with not only your students, but Europe.

Spring Caravan was a blast and Michelle did a great job of producing this festival. Yes, it is genetic since her mother is Shukria, producer of Rakkasah. But I can tell you first hand, since my mother was the first "belly dance festival producer" back in the 60's, that it is no easy job. Even now my mother will say once in a blue moon, "Why don't you put on a festival?" to which I slowly turn around and look at her with my chin down and she will quickly respond, "Oh sorry, what was a thinking?". Then we laugh. So Michelle...you rock! There is truly a difference between Rakkasah East and Spring Caravan with both being so completely creative and unique. Thank you!

Online classes are going great and we just launched our first choreography workshop online this last month with my Belly Dance Hard Rock Fusion Choreography. It is a 3 hour workshop with free MP3 download of the music as well. We have gotten great response and look forward to making the production better each time. But how cool that now you can learn choreographies online and download the music too. This is the future for sure. Who needs a DVD when we now have 46 classes for you to choose from online right now? This is not even including the free level 2 dance movement workshop and the Hard Rock Choreography as well. That comes to less than a dollar a class. Wow!

I want to thank Stephanie and her husband for a wonderful job done producing a level 1 certification in Greenville South Carolina. It was so much fun being able to share your birthday weekend and a level 1 as well. Please visit my blog for a little "behind the scenes" look at our trip to Greenville. Thank you Luka. I also want to thank Marina for a great level 1 in Vancouver. You did it girl!! Finally we were able to bring the certification to Vancouver. Thank you for not giving up. I look forward to building the program with you in Canada as well. Ya!

And last but not least... I want to thank all my dedicated Dance Company members and office staff; Nadia, Anna, and Rebecca.....You hold it up for me while I'm off running around the world spreading the format and certification program. You are all truly wonderful women and I'm grateful for you all. But Vonda... you are my angel that was sent to me in my most creative but tumultuous time. You are my sister! It has been 2 years since I did a European tour and reflecting on that time in my life and where I am today... thank you!

Kim...

Her hair was long and blonde. She sat behind the desk and was on the phone most of the weekend in her flowy Indian skirt and tank top. She never took one second of my workshop but, as assistant to my sponsor, tried valiantly to be a hostess and sign people in. But she was obviously distracted and even came in late for registration the second day because she was out late with “him” the night before. It was brand new love and not even a workshop with me could pull her away from the magnetic force behind this new love affair. A hopeless romantic my whole life, I would watch her through the glass door that separated the lobby from the dance floor as she held her cell phone in one hand and tossed her blonde mane with the other. Every once in a while her cheeks turned rosy and she glowed, blushing as he said something inevitably sweet to her. She looked to be in her late 20’s but I could tell she had never felt this way before; her reactions to this new love were so organically young in spirit.

The next year my sponsor brought me back for a 3-day level one certification workshop. This time the blonde, hair-tossing, love struck woman was in the workshop. She played a much more active role in sponsoring me this time around and I got to know her very well. Her name was Kim and she was a member of DC Tribal. She was actively involved and loving belly dance. She worked alongside her partner Marta, founder of the non-profit DC Tribal, to bring teachers to the DC area. I loved these gals! They really wanted to step out of the box and bring my certification program to DC - no matter what!

Kim On the way to the first day of the workshop I asked Kim about Mr. Cell phone. She immediately blushed the same shade of pink I remembered from the year before and informed me that they were now living together and madly in love. He was a huge support system for her dancing. I asked how they met and she told me the story of the party they were both at where he was playing music and she was in a group dancing. They just locked eyes and that was it. Ah….the musician and the dancer…. but of course! I loved the fact that they were still together and razzed her a bit about how she was on the phone with him instead of training with me on my last visit. We both laughed.

Kim was not planning on testing, but by the end of the third day she was totally motivated by the demands of my format. She had never worked so hard in dance before and she loved it. She tested for level one and passed. Now, as anyone who has studied my format knows, passing level one is just the beginning, and maintaining and moving forward in your training only gets harder. As a result, Kim began an intense training program the day after I left.

It wasn’t long after that I got the call; Kim was thanking me for saving her life. She said it was because of the tough physical training that she felt a discomfort in her belly and decided to go see a doctor. If she hadn’t been doing my format and its demanding requirements, she would never have felt it. “It” being the huge tumor that had thankfully just been removed from her belly with success. She was also going through Chemo and was feeling very positive about the whole experience. She assured me that she was going to be okay and get back to working on her certification process soon after the Chemo was over.

I was in shock and told her to take it easy. She was so motivated that it was almost as if the idea of being able to work on her certification and training was synonymous with becoming cancer free. I was very supportive. Having lost my father to cancer when I was 9 years old, I know that having goals to live for make a huge difference in recovery. I would often say to Kim, “Hurry up and heal 'cause I have plans for you honey.” She loved it. The day of her surgery I made sure to get the results immediately since I had grown so close to her recovery process. She was so brave and gave me such inspiration.

Suhaila & KimKim finally healed and all traces of the cancer were gone. She attacked her training full force and came out to the “mothership” in California many times to train with both me and my mother. We became friends and she was the sole sponsor of my certification program in the DC area. Kim was full of life and her positive outlook always made me appreciate her. She was still always a bit physically fragile but “he,” Mr. Cell phone, would drive her any distance and wait for her during my workshops since it made her so happy to dance. Then he would feed her and they would drive home together. I could see in his eyes how much he adored her and she would just melt in his presence.

It wasn’t long after that we got news that the cancer was back. It was such an inconvenience for her since she just wanted to train in her dance. But this time around she expressed herself differently. She didn’t want to talk about the second series of Chemo she was going through. She didn’t want to talk about how sick she felt. And she didn’t want to talk about the concept of passing into another world; that was just not an option. So we all just followed her lead. We carried on with our lives and didn’t really give the issue much consideration. The next time I saw Kim was at Rakkasah East in New Jersey. The Chemo had left her with no hair but she was getting ready to go on stage anyway. She was performing to a piece of music that her boyfriend had composed for her about her illness. The curtain opened and I got chills. She stood there in the middle of the stage and danced the anger, passion, fear and loss that were so inextricably tied to the circumstances. Tears just ran down my face throughout the entire piece. Her performance was so honest it actually made me sick to my stomach. I heard her loud and clear.

I will never forget meeting with Kim at one of my New Jersey workshops two years ago. I had recently separated from my husband and was devastated. She came to the workshop for love and support. When we met for breakfast the morning of the second day, she had been up all night with notes on how to help me get on my feet. I felt so stupid even complaining about my life as she was fighting for hers. But somehow trying to figure out ways to save me got her mind off how she was trying to save herself on a daily basis.

KimThe last time I saw Kim, I stayed with her and Paul (aka "Mr. Cell Phone"). They were living together and he was her total support system during this dark time. It was so romantic and tragic at the same time, but both were very solid and matter of fact about the process and nothing seemed to get them down. It was such a contrast to what I was going through personally, and it gave me hope.

Kim’s passing was devastating to many people. Until her last breath she was trying to focus on her training, ways to enhance my business, and keep herself integrated in bringing me and my certification program to DC. Kim visits me in my dreams often, always with that long blonde hair and rosy blush, talking on her cell phone on the other side of the glass door that separated the studio from the lobby. Kim is missed and will always hold a place in my heart.

Accessing the Emotions, Dancing in Cairo
by Nadira

Nadira'S Camel RideAs a Bellydancer, I’ve always felt a pull to visit Egypt to experience the history and culture of this dance I love so much. The chance came about just recently and it was so worth the wait. My trip to Egypt was a whirlwind of sightseeing, cultural intake and one amazing experience after another. I’ve been to Turkey to perform and instruct but this trip was different. I went with a large group for a total of 18 days and in that time experienced so much of the Egyptian culture. You can read books or watch the travel channel for a glimpse into Egyptian history, but you have to be there in person to truly get the grandeur and awe of history. Even though this was my first trip, I felt at home in Egypt, almost as though I’d been there before.

The middle of our trip was spent at the Ahlan Wa Sahlan Festival. This was an overload of sparkles, baubles and bling. Vendors were everywhere trying to lure you into their booth, promising to have exactly what you needed. There were also featured instructors like Momo Kadous and Amir Thaleb surrounding you along with the ever present lure of performing with a live Egyptian band each evening. There were dancers of varying countries, each bringing their culture into the mix. I watched the gala performances showcasing both featured instructors and festival attendees and saw a unifying trend – many dancers seemed to be searching for that "je ne sais quoi" of Egyptian emotion. Dina said it best in her workshop. “I cannot teach you the emotion, it is just me. It is who I am.” It was surprising at first to see this, but then it hit me. We’re in Egypt, the nucleus of this dance form, and dancers are trying to emulate that spirit. Watching these performances, I couldn’t help but to compare the different styles and became encapsulated with that need to be Egyptian. But what does that truly mean? Each dancer had their own flavor, yet each seemed engulfed with that same need. It was a place I’d never been in my dance.

Nadira at AWSThe night of my performance had arrived. I had been sick as most travelers do and was struggling to keep my energy up. My head wasn’t in the right place to perform and it was all I could do to get food in my stomach. But it was important to me to dance in Egypt with the live band, so I held it together. Being a nightclub performer and having my start with an Egyptian band myself, I felt excitement to have that same experience in Cairo. Backstage there was chaos with dancers getting ready; each speaking a different language, and the band in Arabic making last minute changes to sets. There was so much going on, it would have been easy to allow the external focus to affect me. I had to take a step back, get centered, tap into my Level III emotional prep and find my core.

It was my turn to take the stage. I have always let the music lead me, but getting centered allowed me to trust my gut instincts and dance. As I took the stage, I could see in their eyes the audience was taking me in just as I did the previous dancers. The band played my favorite song, Leylet Hob, and I allowed the music to take over. It was freeing as my dance and trip came full circle. It was an organic mixture of feeling at home in Egypt, in my element and with the music. This trip wasn’t just about seeing the sights or dancing, it was an experience I did not set out to have, but glad I did.

Goodbye...

My heart sank at the news of the death of Michael Jackson. I was in Kindergarten when I first learned of him - our class room had a poster of the Jackson 5 with Michael front and center. Not only did I grow up on his music, but I also was very much influenced by his dedication to his art and they way he fought to realize his vision. It was not easy to leave his brothers and start his own sound, fearing both the success and failure. But that is exactly what he did, and it always gave me hope...Read more of Suhaila's commentary on the passing of Michael Jackson on Suhaila's Blog!

Hello! There is a mass Belly Dance happening at Artscape !
At 5pm and at 7pm, DragonSong band and Belly Dance Delight have invited many, many dancers to perform with them! Probably 30 bellydancers will represent the rainbow and dance a choreography together using silk veils...
at 5pm in front of the main MICA Building, at 1300 Mt. Royal Ave. and then at 7pm in front of Penn Station under the giant man/woman statue!
Belly Dance Delight is dancing under the name "Raks Revelry" (she's 'supposed' to book new acts every year, and we are both a new act every year and wildly popular, so she wants us back every year). We will also perform under the name "Raks Revelry" on Saturday and on Sunday at 7pm at Penn Station- closing the show every night!

We will be dancing outside, but we hope it will not be too blazing hot this late in the day... come join us! We'll make sure to put some audience participation in!

Featured Dancer of the Month
Amy (Alizah Afet) Smith

Amy Smith Greetings! I'm honored to be featured in Amira Jamal's newsletter; usually I'm on the other side of the reporting and publishing process. I publish "Belly Dance New England," a magazine and Web site for the Middle-Eastern music and dance community in New England. I've been doing that for about 12 years. It all started one weekend in 1996, when there was a tribute to George Abdo (he was still with us then) in Boston, and a big workshop with Morocco in Western Mass., and neither end of the state knew what was happening at the other end! The magazine has grown from a 10-page newsletter to a 60-plus page publication, and in the process, I've had the good fortune to meet and befriend many wonderful people in the dance community.

Another passion of mine is local belly dance history, which has spawned two projects (apparently, the magazine, my day job, and my own dance doesn't keep me busy enough). To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the magazine, I wanted to honor that history by documenting the "legends" of Boston belly dance through a collaboration with the amazing photographer Michael Baxter. Michael captures a dancer's the true essence and character, regardless of her age. This project is the first time Michael has worked with "seasoned" dancers, and he is enjoying every minute of it. Look for a "Legends" book and possibly an exhibit next year.

The "Legends" project, in turn, has spawned a documentary project! The film, called Aziza!, spotlights the "nightclub era" of Boston belly dance, from the 50s to the 80s. This was a time when there was live music and dance performances in nightclubs every night of the week. Greek, Armenian, and Lebanese musicians played together in these clubs - something which apparently only happened here. Aziza! also offers a unique perspective on how three ethnic groups intermingled socially, and how nightlife played a vivid role in the immigrant experiences of these communities.
Another Hint from Language of the Dance: Tips, Techniques and Stories (many of the steps mentioned in this article can be seen on the CD-Rom which comes with my book)

DANCE TIPS: BAKER'S DOZEN

1. Intent: Make every movement on purpose. If you are doing a hip isolation and do not want to move your arms back and forth then make sure you don't. If you are doing a hip isolation and you mean to move your arms back and forth, then do so. It's a movement's intent that makes it right or wrong.

2. Isolations: Many isolations can be willed, rather than practiced. I am thinking of the washing machine shimmy, in particular. Many of my students practice this to death along with making sure they have perfect posture and are supremely isolated. But their arms still go back and forth a little bit or their hands shake. I tell them at some point, they just have to WILL themselves not to have extraneous movement. PERIOD.

3. Practicing with mirrors: I believe that, except for very few moves, mirrors serve no purpose beyond just a quick check to see that you are getting the effect you are looking for. I find that students who practice in front of mirrors or who have studied with teachers who teach into mirrors usually (but not always) have a less strong understanding of a step than those who feel the step in their body to correct it, rather than look at it to correct it. I do have a large mirror in my home studio, and occasionally take a student over to it just to look at the difference between flat or lifted, or to look at the roundness of the arm. But once the concept is understood we immediately move away from the mirror. You may also want to look at a mirror to see how a step looks on your body. Not every step is for every body. You won't know that unless you look at it on yourself. You can love what another dancer does but it might just not be the right move for you.

4. Learn to conserve energy: Find which steps give the biggest bang for their buck. For me they are AJ's Egyptian Pivot, Open Door, Pulsing/Circling with Hip Circles, Hip Clicks, Side Hip-Lift Walk, and the Washing-Machine Shimmy. You want to have movements that fill the stage with your energy, but in effect, take none. The choice will be different for each person. Experiment and find which steps you find easy, and which can be done at different speeds, angles, and direction. These can be your default or resting steps.

5. Right Brain/Left Brain: Most dancers have difficulty doing movements equally well on both sides of their body. I strongly urge my students to start to use their less dominant side for everyday activities like eating, brushing their hair and teeth, stirring a pot, etc. Next time you reach for the phone do it with the hand that you usually don't use - dial with the other. Next time you reach in the cabinet for something do it with the non-dominant side. Not that I am asking you to sign your John Hancock with your less dominant hand, but doing this exercise will help you "rewire" in such a way that it will become easier for you to execute steps on either side.

6. Practicing Scales: I always told my children (my daughter plays the violin, my son plays the viola) that in order for them to do all the things they enjoyed - playing in the school or community orchestras, performing solos on stage, etc., that they have to practice their scales and technical studies. You cannot have the ease and confidence that it takes to have fun unless you go through all the hard work to get there. Similarly with dancing, I often tell my students: "In real life dancing you may never do this step, but it is part of practicing your scales." What I would refer to, for instance, are steps that build absolute isolation. An example would be to do a large Figure 8 without moving the torso at all. Please practice everything and practice it well, even though you don't think you will ever use it in your own performance.

7. Reverberations: This falls under the Intent and Isolation tips, but I am giving it a separate section of its own. Make sure that if you are doing a hip movement, for instance, that you do not move the opposite hip as you finish with one side. For example, if you are doing a side hip-hit walk, where you raise the hip as you step to the side, when you ready yourself for the next step, make sure you put your moving foot down directly next to the standing foot and don't place your moving foot to the front. This will cause the opposite hip to swing out (unless, of course, you want a swing in the opposite hip). I bring this up because you have to be aware that the placements of your working/standing legs/feet are as important as the hip that you are moving.

8. Be Deliberate: You must be deliberate in your movements and not be flailing and jumping all over the place. You can exude a lot of energy without being frantic.

9. Muscle Memory: When you practice a step it helps to always start on the same side in the same direction. For instance, when I work on Figure 8s with my students I always start on the right hip going from back to front. I do this so that my students' bodies will automatically drop into a Figure 8 the minute they think of doing one. Of course they can go in any direction with any variation, but this is a good way to train yourself to remember all your steps. Once you are fully trained and the muscle memory is established, you will more often "just" dance without thinking of each and every movement before, or as, you do it.

Some of my Favorite Quotes

Instead of favorite quotes this month I would like to tell you a charming and thoughtful fable:

One time there was a little cat who went to cat philosophy school. For hours and hours he would chase his tail but catch it only once in a while. An older cat came upon him and asked, "What are you doing?" The younger cat answered, "At cat philosophy school we learned that the meaning of life is happiness and that happiness is in our tail." The older cat answered, "Well, I did not go to cat philosophy school like you did, but I believe the same thing: That indeed the meaning of life is happiness, and indeed it is located in our tail. However, what I have learned is that if I just go about my business, it will always follow me every day of my life."
Thank you for reading this newsletter: Amira Jamal - Let's Belly Dance! Please give me your feedback so that this newsletter can grow into something that will be useful to you as students and dancers. Would you like to be a featured dancer? Is there something you would like to see presented (a tip, a question, a dance step)? This newsletter belongs to all of us - I would like to reflect that!

Sincerely,
Amira Jamal - Let's Belly Dance!

Ask Amira: This month's question: How can a dancer do such a long show and not be out of breath or feel sick from the exhertion?

Short answer: BREATHE.

Longer answer: BREATHE BUT DO IT RIGHT.

In and out. Right? Don't be so quick to think that you know about breathing! Take a few deep breaths and notice if your chest is rising and falling. If it is, then you are not breathing properly, and especially not for a dancer. Breathing this way will tire you out easily and have you panting even before the end of your introduction. If you ever get a chance to watch a baby, or cat, or dog breathe, watch them for a while. You will see their belly going up and down. This is pure breathing - before it is affected by pollution, or cigarette smoking, or talking and eating at the same time, or running to catch up with everything from a bus to the rest of your day.

Either standing up or lying down, put your fingertips together - just barely touching - under your breastbone. This is your diaphragm and should be ultimately where your breath goes (rather than just into your chest). Inhale slowly and fully. Your fingertips should part. It might take several weeks before there is even an imperceptible separation. Do this exercise daily until your fingertips can separate 1/2 inch or more. Do it lying down in bed if it makes you light headed at first. This deep breathing will boost your stamina and help keep you from easily becoming out of breath.

An exercise to learn to steady your breathing is this: Inhale and exhale at a steady slow count, while you stand still. Start jogging in place, while your breath stays at the steady rate. Increase your intensity until you are at an absolute run. If you walk or jog (either outside or on a treadmill) do this often until you can train yourself to keep your breathing steady. The deep breathing from the exercise before, combined with this, will see you through even the most grueling drum solo and finale!

Let me say a word about stitches. You will get a stitch in your side or just under your breastbone from not breathing correctly. This especially occurs when you are doing pivoting or twisting movements (but can happen with anything). Think of it this way: Your muscle filled with oxygen is like a wet dish towel. Wring it out and the water comes out... that's like the oxygen being wrung out of your muscle. Your inclination is to bend over to the side that has the stitch. Instead, bend to the opposite side and breathe deeply. Your stitch will go away more quickly that way. But, breathe correctly and steadily in the first place and it is unlikely to happen!

Please submit your questions - about anything to do with belly dancing!
BAKER'S DOZEN - Continued

10. Loading the Pond: When there is a fishing tournament the sponsors bring in truckloads of fish to load the pond. With thousands of fish you will lucky to catch just 3 or 4. Dancing is much the same way. You must learn hundreds of steps, and then, if you are lucky, you will be able to retrieve a dozen of them for your performance. If you only have a dozen, then you will be lucky to retrieve even 5 or 6. So load your dancing pond with as many steps and variations on those steps as you are able to. BUT, remember - no one wants to catch all thousand fish! And, don't YOU dance all the steps that you know. Be able to rely on just a portion of what you know, and then do them with many variations (level change, direction, with and without arm movement, layering, etc.). The star-quality of your dancing will be found in the depth and interpretation of the movements not in how many movements you know.

11. Make Dance a Part of Your Everyday Life: Listen to your dance music as you drive in the car. While you are driving practice rib cage circles and lifts. You can even practice belly rolls, flutters, and neck slides. Just keep your eyes open! One time when I was listening to particularly beautiful veil song I swooned and closed my eyes for just a second. NOT a good idea traveling 75 miles an hour on the Mass Pike! When you are walking make sure you are lifted. When you are on the phone get up and practice your shimmies. Carry your color wheel and always be on the lookout for pretty fabrics and trims. Be a dancer, not a person who dances.

12. Making Lemonade Out of Lemons: Once in a while you will have something happen to you that could spell disaster. Don't let it. I will give you two examples that happened to me. The first one was when I was a new performer. Not only did my veil slip out of my tuck, but it got under me and I slipped on it. I held myself upright, spread my arms to keep my balance and gave a big smile. The alternative was to get all flustered, start to hunt for the edges of my veil and try to salvage what I could of my pride. Of course the people up front saw what happened, but after the performance someone from the back of the audience came up to me and said: "Boy, I really liked that move you did when you just glided forward with your arms open and gave that big smile."
The second incident happened at the Athenian Corner. I had on a brand new bedleh (two piece costume). Right after the veil section I felt one of the cups getting a little loose. I brushed my long hair off my shoulder and looked down but couldn't quite figure out what had happened. A minute or two later I realized that my bra strap had completely snapped off from the front of the bra and was hanging from the back. The bra cup stayed fairly put as it was a hard cup, but it still presented a problem. Instead of leaving the stage, fixing it, and starting over (or not going on again) I just lifted the cup from the edge, laughed, and pointed to it with the other finger. One of my students rushed over to me to hand me my veil to cover up. I figured, why bother - everyone already knew what had happened, and the cup was still (sort of!) staying up on its own. When it came time to do a backbend I said aloud to the audience, "Gee, do you think I ought to give it a try?" I held the cup to my body with one hand and did a backbend! I finished the entire show not leaving out anything. Mercifully the band knew what was going on and shortened the show even though I got all my "sections" - I went for my tips AND did the drum solo including head swings. It was one of the best and most fun performances that I ever had.

13. Be A Lady (or Gentleman): When I was a dancer in New York City there was a dancer who was revered and loved by all. We newer dancers just worshipped her, especially those of us who worked in the same clubs and got to watch her perform often. Then, one day I saw her at a workshop. She was dressed like a slob, had a foul mouth, hair a mess, smoking and drinking. I never felt the same way about her again, even though nothing had changed in her show. I'm not saying that you shouldn't let your guard down among friends. But still, she was in a public place, and among many people who respected her. You have an image when you are professional dancer, and when that image is tarnished, people cannot feel the same way about your dancing as they did before. In addition, if you are working publicly, you do have to take extra care to keep this image around the customers. Don't change into sweats, be loud and uncouth, and smoke and/or drink up a storm. It isn't nice.

Slow, sultry and sensuous, the taksim segment of the show is where the dancer must express an emotional connection to the intensity and drama of the music. In this workshop, Sarah Skinner will teach correct bodylines, and explain how to seamlessly flow from picture perfect poses into fluid and graceful dance combinations. An overview of four drum rhythms that frequently underscore taksims for dance purposes will be provided. Combinations enhance and compliment the mood of each rhythm will be taught.
