Re: MARCH BellyHappenings
Thu, March 5, 2009 - 4:22 AMFrom DOLPHINA (CA):
www.goddesslife.com
Greetings! March 2009
Dear eGoddess community,
As I pack up the pink feathered boas and remove the vintage record covers from the wall in the process of closing the doors to this incarnation of the Goddess Center, I am inundated with all the GREAT MEMORIES that have happened here. It is astounding the amount of great women that have done magnificent things in this space. There was a palpable feeling the minute you walked through the marabou lined doors. All the ordinary responsibilities of life disappeared as you stepped into a place where glamour, confidence, pink, laughter, dancing were the only things that mattered.
At the Goddess Center, the extraordinary was possible and happened daily: its where life-long friendships were made, Cirque du Goddess Dance troupe was formed and a wedding proposal happened. We danced!! It's where we baked cupcakes (we were into them before Sprinkles opened!), I taught Carmen Electra to bellydance, held Full Moon workshops - learning everything from the Can-Can to sensual massage to feng shui. It held the Sex Object Burlesque show rehearsals, Teacher Training certifications, fashion shows with divine costumes. DVDs and CDs were conceived, produced and shipped from here! I was asked to become Lululemon's Brand Ambassador on that pink round velvet bed. We filmed TV shows and had cheerleading practice for the Tide Football team. Ohhh, the PARTIES we had - so many great ones: the annual Holiday party with non-stop dancing and shopping, Step-Up Goddess Days for underpriviledged girls and their moms, bachelorettes parties, sweet sixteen parties, book signings, slumber parties and just because we finished dance class parties. Classes: bellydance, burlesque, brazilian, hula, cheeleading, drumming, bollywood, lapdance, knitting and surfing - and we had different names for ourselves to suit each one of these classes, sometimes even for each class series. Books - staying up all night to write my book, "Bellydance" and Martha's beautiful photography book. It was a safe haven for recently divorced women having incredible transfomations. We had conversations that lasted until 3am with husbands texting, "Where are you???" Websites, blogs and webisodes. Dennis Rodman (what, a man in the Goddess Center?!) Decadence, outrageous and scandalous behavior, panties, Kiki de Montparnasse, champagne, chocolate fondue with stawberries. Husbands and boyfriends always wondered what happened inside and were constantly trying to find a way to be allowed into the Goddess Center. Just the way it should be. Good times, indeed.
Leaving the Goddess Center after receiving the letter that they are turning this space into condos has been very emotional for me. I have left my claw marks, but I now know that it is time to let go. This past week, as my students came to class with most of the furniture now removed, one woman said, " I guess it is just a space". How true. The Goddess Center is not simply the darling decor. It is wherever we gather. I give thanks to this space that became the Goddess Center and gave me so many memories. I am deeply grateful for the friends, teachers, students, sponsors and my business partner that made the Goddess Center all that it was: pure magic. I look forward to taking this philosophy with me to the temporary studios I am teaching at in March. I hope to dance with you if you live in LA and if not, please join me in spirit in taking the GoddessLife lifestyle wherever you go.
Blessings,

Lesson #10: Learn how to select and open a bottle of Champagne
To my sheer horror, I found out that one of my most glamorous and chic friends did not know how to open a bottle of champagne! This unpleasant discovery was made when the loaded weapon was pointed right at me: she had removed the wire cage (that goes around the cork) and the naked cork was aimed precisely in my direction while she aimlessly chatted. I tried to remain calm as I diverted a total catastrophe by quickly snatching the bubbly from her and putting my hand over the cork. After accusing her of the crime, she confessed that she did not know how to properly open a bottle. I realized at that moment - if she does not know how to open a bottle of champagne - then there must be so many other lost lambs out there! So, in my mission to make the world a better (and safer) place for Goddesses everywhere: here are the guidelines of how to properly select, open and serve a bottle of champagne.

Inspirational Goddess of the Month
Your stories of how the Goddess Workout has transformed your life serve as great inspiration to me and now I want to share it with other Goddesses! Nominate a Goddess!
Name: Anna Celestria
Other Aliases: Ginger Booty, Peppermint cupcake, Sinful Sister, Banana, my Wifey, Sweet and Sour, Pink satin
Story: I am breaking from the tradition of the Inspirational Goddess writing her own story for just this month. I am writing it myself instead for several reasons. With the Goddess Center closing, I wanted to select a Goddess who represented the studio as much as the round pink velvet bed did. Also, she is so humble and generous, she would never be able to authentically tell her GoddessLife story.
She came to the Goddess Center a shy girl after reading about The Goddess Workout in a magazine and I have had the honor to watch her blossom into confident woman. She quickly became an integral part of the community and now I cannot imagine the Goddess Center without her. Anna is also known by her middle name, Celestria, which translates into "Heavenly Body". She united with 3 other students and created the dance troupe, "Cirque du Goddess" and became the first the first bellydance troupe to incorporate circus acts and moves into the dance. Celestria was also an integral part of the Sex Object Burlesque show, performing many routines, including our infamous chair dance duet to, "Luck be a Lady" and the ultra-sensous, "Harlem Nocturne". She became a certified Goddess Workout instructor in Hawaii and taught both bellydance and hula classes at The Goddess Center. Anna Celestria was every student's first encounter with the Goddess Center as she managed the every detail of the entire class schedule. How she managed to do all this while working another full-time job and being a devoted salsa dancer, is a feat that makes her my Inspirational Goddess worthy of being up on all the wall of the Goddess Center next to Marilyn Monroe, Martha Graham and Mother Theresa. Everyone loves Anna, but I love her the most, which is why everyone calls her my wife.
Legendary Goddess of the Month
Nefertiti
Nefertiti was the Great Royal Wife and Chief Consort of the Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaten. Nefertiti and her husband were known for changing Egypt's religion from a polytheistic religion to a monotheistic religion. Simply stated: they believed in only one god, Aten the Sun God.
She had the most divine titles found inscribed about her at Karnak: Mistress of Sweetness, Great King's Wife whom he loves, Possessed of Great Charm, Soothing the King's Heart in his House and Soft Spoken in All.
She was made famous by her bust, now in Berlin's Altes Museum, shown to the right. The bust is one of the most copied works of Ancient Egypt, attributed to the sculptor Thutmose.
Some scholars believe that Nefertiti ruled briefly after her husband's death and before the accession of Tutuankhamun .

Gorillas in the Mist
This movie could possibly turn an ordinary animal lover into an animal activist. Sigourney Weaver earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in Gorillas in the Mist, appearing in almost every frame of Michael Apted's biopic about primatologist Dian Fossey. The movie documents the extraordinary Fossey and her obsession to climb up an African mountain alone to to bond with gorillas. She was an amateur scientist who researched and spotlighted Rwanda's endangered mountain gorillas in National Geographic and became the first person on record to make friendly physical contact with them. Fossey portrays a glamorous warrior for animal rights by tenderly mothering an orphaned gorilla infant and terrorizing an African poacher. To see a woman devote her life to what she feels passionate about, despite her lack of proper education or degree and in the face of danger is the perfect example that you can do anything!

20-Minute Retreats
What can you accomplish in a few minutes? Eat a meal, fold laundry, talk on the phone -- or refresh your spirit. Just 20 minutes a day is all it takes to retreat in tranquility and reconnect with your soul, according to Dr. Rachel Harris, a practicing psychotherapist and associate of Big Sur's Esalen Institute. "In our fast-paced lives, we desperately need retreats to regain our perspective, help us to balance our inner and outer lives - a retreat gives us a chance to just say no to incessant stress and time pressure..." she writes. Incorporating into her book the wisdom of multiple world religions and spiritual masters from Buddhism to Jung, the author offers a variety of flexible approaches to finding that quiet place. She provides practical advice about finding the right retreat setting, as well as appropriate tools to enhance the experience. Because, "a retreat can be anything that allows us to intentionally enter another world."

Goddess Music/playlist
From Billie Holiday to Bellydance this music will inspire you to dance like no one is watching.
The Ultimate Goddess Center Playlist
To ease the pain of moving, I listened to the songs that we danced to in classes at the Goddess Center. Before there was itunes, my students would make CDs for each routine we learned in each class, dating back to 2003! I decided to make a playlist of all the music we ever danced to in our class routines and what I created was THE ULTIMATE GODDESS CENTER PLAYLIST. It was so long, it took 7 CDs to fit all the music. Most of the the music is not on itunes, so these are the highlights - nearly 50 songs - of the music from bellydance, burlesque, lapdance, bollywood, brazilian, hula, cheerleading, surf and drumming classes for the glorious 6 years at The Goddess Center.

§ April 18 & 19 - Zafira Workshops
Zafira Dance Company’s performances are opulent vignettes that combine Bellydance with contemporary and ethnic dance forms. The result is an ornate performance that blurs the boundary between old and new; performer and audience, earthy and elegant.. Guided by the mood of the music, Zafira draws the viewer into each piece by shaping rhythm and melody into gesture and form. Liquid movements, staccato accents and textured choreographies capture a timeless beauty that expresses both the sensuality and strength of the female form.
*Cabaret Macabre: Saturday, April 18th - 12:00-2:00pm
Boring dance routines got you down? Are you looking for something to resuscitate your creativity? Well, let Zafira help you breathe life into your dance practice. Drama, musicality and technique are addressed in this workshop. First, we will build several tribal fusion combinations that incorporate contemporary dance with bellydance torso work- focusing on technique and alignment. Then, we will use these combos to experiment with musicality, emotion, and nuanced gestures in order to bring these young Frankensteins to life.
*COMBO-Nation!: Saturday, April 18th - 2:30-4:30pm
You Love ‘em. We Love ‘em. Dance Combinations are a great way to pack in technique and signature stylizations in a short workshop timeframe. COMBO-nation will cover tried and true Zafira classic combos that they've used in some of their most popular performances, as well as new and "in the works" combos that'll push you both physically and creatively. Bring your note pad & yoga mat fora brief warm up.
*Shimmy-TASTIC!: Sunday, April 19th - 12:00-2:00pm
Take your shimmies to the next level! In this workshop we will cover the classic 3/4 shimmy, with walking, layering exercises and drills. We will cover 4/4 shimmies as well, to better understand and get better control of our hips. We will also play with varying shimmies from old to new school styles. To finish off our workshop we'll cover some unique combos utilizing what we learned, Zafira style!
*Supah' Saucy: Sunday, April 19th - 2:30-4:30pm
Kicks, spins, long extensions and locks are the signature of Zafira’s current repertoire. This workshop presents some fancy footwork and spins within several dance combinations. Couple these saucy moves with evocative music and emotion, and you are at the core of Zafira’s “steal-your-heart” style of bellydance.
*Be sure to bring water, a light snack, yoga mat or towel, and a few extra dollars to spend in the Souk (vendors will only be available on Saturday!).
Location: TBD (be sure to check back soon for location)
Cost: Single class = $40 / Full day Sat or Sun = $70 / Entire weekend = $120

Re: MARCH BellyHappenings
Sat, March 7, 2009 - 4:35 AMFrom SUHAILA. (CA):
Suhaila Salimpour...the Newsletter March 2009
Greetings from Suhaila
Greetings! March is full of preparations for Rakkasah. Our 2009 stage show is in full swing and our rehearsals are doubled. It is so exciting to see the studio full of costumes and staging. When we start doing the show to the back wall, you know we are close.
Congratulations to Rebecca Carroll, Kitiera Morehead, Rachel George, and Nadira for successfully passing LEVEL 3!!! You all made me very proud and my tears of happiness never seem to be able to be held during my appreciation speech at the end of the week. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication!
We are having our first Level 2 Jamila Salimpour weeklong, and the anticipation for the 4 choreographies is intense. I can't wait to see who will test. My mom is looking forward to coming by the studio each day and for lecture and DVD sharing too. I hope you all sign up early for the Jamila level 1 weeklong since the workshop always sells out early.
The big news around the studio is the much anticipated launching of ONLINE CLASSES! Luka and I have been working very hard on this project and I know that you all will be happy with the amount of classes and training available. Not only will you have 26 classes a month to choose from in level 1-3 with me, but Folkloric Fusion, Dance Movement, and yes.... Jamila's weekly classes as well. We also have specialty workshops and free downloads too. It will be just like you are in class with us!
See you at Rakkasah!
Suhaila Editorial
Only a few were chosen each year to be invited to Bob’s house for the yearly “dinner with Meisner”. It was always in December and we all waited the whole year to see who would get the coveted invitation. It was usually based on dedication to the art, blending personalities, and respect for the system (of the theater group). I had already been with Playhouse West for over 2 years when I was invited.
Sandy Meisner would come to L.A. a few times a year. We would always look forward to his arrival with great respect and anticipation. He was older and very frail, but sharp as a tack and would totally look right through you. It was both exciting and nerve racking to know that for the next few weeks Sandy would be teaching us. I always felt that even the colors I chose to wear or how I sat or what my hair was styled like was a direct reflection of how he would see me….. and Sandy was looking!
MeisnerPlayhouse West was the theater group that I was a part of for 4 years while living in L.A. during the decade in my life I call the “LaLa Years”. It was a highly respected theater group ran and directed by Robert Carnegie. We called him “Bob”. Jeff Goldblum was also being trained by Bob to teach and would sit next to Bob while he instructed us. Soon Jeff was given a class of his own and the school was very busy. When Sandy was in town we all pretty much knew that anything we learned could be changed, reorganized, enforced, or confirmed at any time with no notice. We might have been working on an emotional preparation that last week worked, only to find out the next week from Sandy that we were all big phonies.
There was no sign on the door or building. The gray color of the building tried to hide the magic inside. If you were not coming to the building for a reason, then the building really didn’t want you. The decor inside was simple and had stadium seating with a focus on the stage. The carpet was gray, the chairs were gray and the energy was put into the lighting and creation of the environment that screamed, “living truthfully under imaginary circumstances.” The stage was large, and the backstage as well. So much time was spent backstage doing our “emotional preps” that it had to be decent. There was a door that lead to the stage from backstage and I spent many years on one side or the other of that door trying to pick up the emotional intent of “the knock” as well as being the knocker.
MeisnerWhen I first started with Playhouse West I spent 6 months doing repetition. So many classes would end in Sandy, Bob, or Jeff screaming, “Nope….sit down!” only for me to go back to my seat confused as to what I did or didn’t do. It would take an average of two to three months later for a light bulb to go off inside my head and “get” what they were seeing or not seeing in me from the exercise that I did months ago. Looking back now, I know that the reason we didn’t ask what we did “wrong” was because we wouldn’t “get it” since if we got it we wouldn’t have messed up. Sounds confusing, but just being in the class and allowing the instructors to guide my process and trust that they knew how to guide me is what I did. Like closing your eyes and holding your arms out with palms up and then falling forward. Meisner was more difficult to understand since during the later years of his life he spoke through a box and would speak during the inhaling process. So I would focus on his eyes most of the time and found him extremely playful and expressive. Just being in his presence was a gift and I knew he appreciated my dedication.
My goals were never to “be an actor”. I was in love with belly dance and always knew that was my destiny. I felt lucky that I had the complete trust and knowledge that my future and calling was in creating my format. But I knew I had to be in this theater group and I knew it was for a reason. It was totally instinctual and needed to be followed through on. I honored the experience and knew that when I left the gray building on Lankershim Blvd. in North Hollywood that the experience would never leave me.
MeisnerWhen I began the process of structuring my Certification Program, I knew I had to address major issues such as stage presence, emotional connection to music, how to choreograph, and being honest with core values needed and associated with being an artist. There were huge issues since I saw a pattern in so many dancers that had started with the thought that you had to “have feeling” from your first belly dance class even before you knew how to have body control or technique. I saw so many dancers who thought they had to know the lyrics to an Arabic song and try and mouth them in order to look like they knew the meaning of the song. I saw so many dancers come into my studio having years of other belly dance teachers telling them to “SMILE….Just smile." I had to deal with students coming to me with “dance names” that were given to them by other teachers and I had to watch these women try to “act like a belly dancer” while they couldn’t relate to “the real them being a belly dancer.”
I found myself over and over again saying, “You must act truthfully under imaginary circumstances.” Then I knew I needed to go back and re-read Sandy’s book, “On Acting.” I knew Sandy could help me. All of a sudden I “got” how frustrated my Playhouse West teachers must have felt seeing all of these students come through them trying to “act”.
On ActingWhile I was re-reading the book, I decided to replace the acting partner with the music, and the script with the choreography, and BAM…. I was onto something. Of course….. it was so simple….. it is all the same….. this will work! I was so excited to share this technique with my students and looked forward to bringing my knowledge and experiences with Playhouse West and Sandy Meisner to my students. It would change there lives forever.
I had to find the placement of this technique and training within dance. I wanted to make sure we didn’t start this training until level 3 since I wanted the early focus to be on learning the body, technique, safety and skill before someone worried about “performing”. It can be damaging to perform before one is truly ready…. That is, if you are not feeding the ego and focused on evolving as an artist. I also decided to create exercises that would be more geared towards dance improv and showing the importance of the emotion matching the music truthfully.
In my level 3 workshops, I can honestly say that it is one of the highlights of the week. Watching these artists really reach and create honest emotional perspectives with multiple music selections are some of the best “performances” I’ve seen in my life. Gee... who would have thought that good entertainment could be non-entertainment and have depth. And I just thought I had to teach “the camel” with Isis wings.

Alive In Toronto - Guest Editorial
by Marisa
Marisa of Las Vegas
Toronto, November 2007—“Whatever you do, don’t stop!” Suhaila whispers in my ear as I pass her. The urgency in her voice reminds me that opportunities like this don’t come around very often. It’s day three of four of the Toronto workshops and I’m leading the line. We’re deep into Level Two material. I readjust my posture as I round the last cone and turn around. Making eye contact with Danielle, a Level One certified dancer I shared a dressing room with at the theatre last night. I smile. A moment of recognition and her look turns back inward as she concentrates on the movement.
This is no typical day three. After a full day of Jamila Format, another of Suhaila Format Level One and a long morning of Level Two drilling, a certain amount of burnout is to be expected. But this afternoon the energy level in the room is nearly electric. We’re drilling full time twists, downbeat right, with half time footwork…to a fast Saidi rhythm played on two tabla, a riqq and a daf. Live. I feel a drop of sweat trickle from between my shoulder blades down the length of my back. Today there are no pauses between foot patterns, no breaks to let the line catch up. Suhaila has warned me that the musicians are watching me for cues, and I know that if I slow down, they will too. Breathe. Moving to the right.
This is the first time I’ve drilled to live music, and I’m surprised by the difference it makes. My mental state is a unique blend of the determination and focus that accompany serious drilling and the adrenaline-powered exhilaration that I feel when I perform with a live band. I feel euphoric, hypnotized, and totally grounded in my body.
By the time I finish the last stretch of grapevine to the left, my entire torso is covered with sweat. Audra, who is T.A.ing, catches my eye and dramatically lowers her shoulders, reminding me of my form as my feet settle into the rhythm of alternating chasses. Twist, twist, twist, twist…the tempo is fast and my body is beginning to tire. Strong demi-pointe, posture, breathing…the rest of the world has ceased to exist for me. I’m aware only of the floor, my aching calves and obliques, Suhaila’s voice calling out the movements and the booming of the drums.
Level II in TorontoMy body moves automatically around the room, my entire consciousness absorbed in trance-like concentration. Pas de bourrée front, back…alternating chasses and pas de bourrée … I snap out of it just in time to realize that I’m halfway around the room and I don’t know what comes next. In a panicked voice I shout to Suhaila over the din. “What now?!” With a quick raise of her eyebrows and a subtle hand gesture that says “watch me,” she demos the next foot pattern for me: 8 counts walking forward, 8 counts turning in place.
The transition is close to seamless, but I’ve lost my concentration. Aware again of the other students in the room, I realize that they’re exhausted. Arms are all over the place and feet are dragging. I have no idea how long the drummers have been playing, but the stitch in my side and dryness in my throat tell me that we’ve been going strong for a while. I take a deep breath, pull my shoulder blades down my back and try to hold myself together as I circle the room, which feels enormous. “Left foot flat, ball of the right,” Suhaila cues me as I pass her. I suppress feelings of panic as I realize how many more options this opens up for us.
There aren’t that many dancers in line behind me now, and I know that both my face and body are showing weakness. Suddenly, the music speeds up to a nearly frenzied pace. Ball, flat, ball, flat, twist, twist, twist, twist… The drummers are watching me as I approach. They’re coated with nearly as much sweat as I am and are looking like they’re ready for a break, too (I wonder where they got those towels from—I didn’t notice them earlier.). And then, when I thought the end would never come…the rhythm becomes a roll, the drummers’ fingers flying on the drumheads. Without thinking, I begin to spin. Pain forgotten, my body whips around…and “tek TEK!” I strike a pose.
And then there is only laughter and the heartbreakingly beautiful knowledge that THIS is what it feels like to be truly alive.

What's New at TribO for 2009?
We have a lovely new event site, in nearby Hendersonville, NC. This very private site is still close to town & all its amenities. This year we have heated cabins, the best vending area EVER, a bigger & wilder lake, & a whole studio dedicated to the Costumer's Arts. The terrain is fairly level & everything is close by, making it very friendly for our slower moving strollers of every age.
We also have a new WEBsite. New content on classes, teachers & more is being uploaded all the time. Feel free to contact us if you have more images of TribOriginal in previous years to add to the gallery, such as our LadyBug Twins, above.
Teaching staff includes:
Jill Parker, The Mezmer Society, Nevik 'Demonovitch' Hartnell, Mavi, Ziah, Majida & Darcy DeVine of the Awalim Dance Company, Gypsy Hands, Baraka Mundi, Urban Gypsy & Tribe Marrakech...
3/1/09 More Delicious Teachers Just Confirmed:
Kamille Hitz of Rockabelly, CA, back again for 2009, teaching Fans, Turkish stylings, & some serious line-dancing to get the party started!
Politti Ashcraft of Blue Damsel, CA, here for her third year, bringing her style & her whimsical mania to the stage & classroom...Certain to be strirring up trouble. TribO style.
Daveed Korup of the Port Discovery Museum & Turku, MD, is spending his birthday weekend playing with us, seen above with his lightening fingers of percussion.
DeLacey Santini, now out of Asheville, will be teaching her Drills & sharing the Sass.
Denys Proteau of Turku, SC, will be co-leading the TribO line-dancing revolution.
Natalie Brown of Delerium Tribal, SC, is back, spreading her musicality & mastery of old school Tribal Improv.
Blue Moon Dance Company, NC, is that rare & wonderful animal, a family dance company! This is their first year at TribO, sharing their own signature style of group improv with zils. Make them welcome!
The good news keeps coming in. Visit the new website periodically for teacher updates!

TribOriginal FAQS for Onça...
Have questions? Read on to learn a bit more about this award-nominated, nationally recognized event. You can also visit the website at www.triboriginal.org to learn more, & watch our TribO video on Youtube: www.youtube.com/watch
"What is included in the price?"
EVERYTHING is included in the All Access Packages - your whole foods world cuisine meals, amazing shows, zany parties, access to all classes & vending, heated cabin lodging, even 20+ hours of childcare! Limited Access passes include everything but classes. This has got to be the best deal in all BellyDanceLand.
"I want to register with my friends, family, & troupemates. What qualifies for the Group Rate? Can we bunk together?"
Six or more constitute a Group. Children are included in this rate. Work-Study folks are not. To keep us just a little bit saner in the office, a Group MUST register and pay at the same time.
To bunk together, pick a name & housing preference for your tribe; all parties registering under that tribe name will be placed together. Example: Tribe Hufflepuff, Co-ed Family.
Friends registering later under the same tribe name can be added to your bunking arrangement, but not as part of your Group discount.
"Can I just do a day or two?"
Yes. 2009 offers packages to suit most every schedule, from daytrippers to the four-day Full Monty. But why would you want to miss a minute of the festivity?
"Do you offer airport service?"
Yes. Shuttling is available with prior arrangement.
$20 for the Asheville airport - about 20 minutes from the site.
$50 for the Charlotte airport - about 2 hours from the site.
"Now that Work-Study has expanded, how much can I work off?"
Make your adventure even more affordable! Work-study folks get $10 per hour off their fees for being part of the team that makes all the TribO magick happen; cooking, setting/cleaning up, site stewardship, & working in the children's program. For folks planning to lodge & eat onsite, we recommend no more than four hours a day, just to keep you in the spirit of fun. Folks staying or living in the Asheville area may choose to do several long days of set-up or clean-up to get their work in & leave the weekend free to frolic. Talk to Onca to explore your options.
"I registered, but want to upgrade to Full Access. Can I do that at TribO?"
Of course! It happens every year - someone signs up for Limited Access & then cannot resist all the amazing learning opportunities. Do it now, or the good folks onsite at the Gate can help. Should you wait until TribO to upgrade, you will be charged the difference between your pre-registration & the Gate fee.
What are you waiting for? Register at www.triboriginal.org or over the phone at #828 232 2980. Can't wait to see you in October!

Small business support
I received a newsletter from Cardio Coach. Sean O'Malley is a personal trainer I met years ago on my travels and he has a product line called Cardio Coach. His newsletter reminded me of the concept of "it is better to give than it is to receive". He pointed out that in this hard financial crisis that the world is suffering from it is critical to keep supporting the small business owners as best we can. That doesn't mean you have to cut a check or spend a cent. Small businesses are getting hit hard and we now need, more than ever, for consumers to shout to their friends about good service and good experiences. The word of mouth is a huge advertisement. Let's do our part and keep giving. It only takes a minute to send in a review or tell a friend about something you discovered and enjoyed.
I would like to ask all of you to shout out for ShakeMyDay goodies by Sarah Skinner
* Please submit a review of my DVD's you have used so that others can gain additional information from the viewpoint of your experience. There are many sites such as Amazon.com, World Dance New York or e-zines such as gildedserpent.com
* Please make sure that all of the photos by Sarah Skinner have a readable photo credit on them (though I know you have the credit there anyway's :) )
* Please continue to spread the word to your friends and family. Word of mouth is the sole form of advertising. Blog's, forums, Face Book and chatter.
* Thank you for all the wonderful and encouraging support you all have given me!
pay it forward
With the concept of giving brings to mind:"Pay-it-forward". Please enjoy hearing about some of the small businesses that I enjoy.

From AUNT ROCKY (NYC):
Dear Dancing Darlings,
What are you waiting for?? NOW is the time to think about coming with me this summer!!! It's past mid March & I have to let the airlines know how many seats to hold, so I must know NOW:
ARE YOU HOPING TO COME WITH ME OR NOT??? Let me know right away.
IF you are waiting for later, understand that with the growing conservatism, there will soon be NO dance left "over there". Truly the only place left now to see Cairo's best dancers is at the Ahlan wa Sahlan Festival's opening & closing galas!!!
THIS was in the BBC's newscast yesterday:
SAD GOODBYE TO 'COSMOPOLITAN' CAIRO
By Christian Fraser BBC News, Cairo
These days the centre of Cairo is a dusty, polluted, overcrowded metropolis. But in the 1940s it was a city full of style and culture, the beating heart of an Arab renaissance.
Downtown the bars and nightclubs flourished along the sweeping boulevards attracting all sorts of adventurers from around the world. Since then many of the bars and cabaret clubs have fallen into disrepair and disrepute, as the Egyptians grow more observant of conservative Islam.
"Most of these places have since disappeared, particularly those that faced out on to the street - people didn't want to see that any more."
The Sharezad club has survived the cull, but this belly-dancing venue is a far cry from its glorious heyday.
Inside there are heavy red velvet curtains and on the walls the photos of the some of the world's best belly-dancers, who once came here to shake their stuff.
Max Rodenbeck, journalist and author of Cairo, the City Victorious, says belly-dancing has faded out in the last 10 years.
"It has really suffered from the wave of conservatism that has passed over this place," Mr Rodenbeck says.
"You no longer go out to a nightclub and sit with your friends, put a bottle of whisky on the table and smoke lots of cigarettes. That's not what people do any more. In a way downtown Cairo has degentrified..."
Another writer who looks back with fondness on the Cairo of old is the author of the best-selling novel The Yacoubian Building. Dr Alaa al-Aswany blames the slow death of downtown Cairo on the encroachment of conservative Islam.
"From the beginning of the 1980s it became very hard, sometimes impossible, for the owner to pass on the liquor licence to a son or a new owner," he said.
"I think it is all part of the government's attempts to counteract the fanatics - but they are doing in the wrong way. The government's trying to make the point they are as religious as the fanatics. It is silly really."

Theatrical Bellydance Intensive
Dancers Anasma and Ranya are organizing another event to explore and define the Theatrical elements of Bellydance. And Sera Solstice is one of the four featured instructors.
The"mini-conference," a full day of workshops and three evenings of intimate performances that showcase the strength and diversity of bellydance artists of all styles.
Our aims are:
- To celebrate the theatrical influences on our dance form and in our performances, whether we are dancing on a stage or in a less formal setting;
- To welcome performers to present innovative and traditional material and to enjoy seeing and hearing about each others' work;
- To provide a safe space for workshop participants to learn and explore different theatrical approaches - working from the inside-out and from the outside-in-that can bring greater depth to their art and greater comfort and confidence onstage;
- To bring bellydancers of different styles together to share common goals of elevating our art form and to learn from each other;
- And to showcase New York City in its creative glory as a mecca for theatrical work in our field.
We look forward to your participation in one of our events this April or in the future as we expand the conference!
-- Ranya & Anasma, Co-Organizers
Sera will be teaching a class as part of the event:
Finding your Movement-voice Saturday 11:30-1pm
April 11
At Ripley Grier Studios, 520 8th Ave. (btwn 36th & 37th Sts. ), 16th floor,
Using a series of structured exercises, from seated meditation, to high-energy movements, Sera will guide dancers to connect deeply to their innate movement, and to their original love of dance. Helpful for performers who want to be more relaxed on-stage, and for newer dancers who want to clarify their intention and desire to go deeper into their dance.
more info at www.theatricalbellydance.com
Workshop participants will be invited to present a piece in a show on Saturday, Apr. 11th, at Solstice Studio.
Anatomy for Dancers
Sunday: March 22nd, 5:00-8pm: Instructor:
Rev. Catherine Cusumano, M.S., L.Ac.
Learn from an acupuncturist, the muscles of the body and how they are used for dance. This is a great workshop for those who are having difficulties with specific bellydance movements, as you will have a better idea of how your muscle relate to specific movements. Also, this workshop is a must for instructors of any type of dance, as this is vital information to share with students when breaking down movements. This workhshop is only $20 if you sign up in advance!

Middle Eastern Drumming
classes at Solstice Studio:
Identifying and playing Middle Eastern Rhythms is very important for Bellydancers, whether we are are practicing a fusion form such as ATS, or East Coast Tribal, or if we are practicing folkloric or caberet.
Connecting with the percusive element of our dance helps us to understand and express music of every kind on a much deeper level, plus it honors an ancient root of our dance.
We are proud to have two talented and charismatic doumbek instructors, Casey Bond, and Brad Mack, both very active within the NYC Bellydance community.

Performance:
A Goal to work towards...
Solstice Studio will be holding a performance in mid-August which will include all class members. Performances have been the high-point for most dancers who participate in classes. Most dancers begin classes with the thought that they are not intersted in performing, and then find when show-time rolls around, they know the class choreography well enough to try it out. Most classes will now be building choreography that will be used in the performance. If you want to participate in the performance, NOW is the time to enroll in class. You will not be pressured into performing (unless you are in an advanced class). The performance should feel like the next natural step on your path as a dancer, and a reason to step your dance up to a higher level. Beginner classes will each perform a very short segment, specialty classes will perform a choreography reflective of what you have been working on in that class. Intermediate technique classes will perform more in-depth choreography just as in the past.

Reiki Workshop and Certification
Dancers may ask, how does Reiki relate to Bellydance? My answer to this is that through increasing our awareness of the subtle feeling and energy within our bodies, we are therefore creating one more link between the self and the body, so that we may dance with a sense of wholeness, and full awareness of who we are. For performers, it is easy to argue that the most important technique you can learn is how to relax on-stage. Reiki training offers this and much more (including how to more quickly heal from injuries).
